My 10 year old Daughter was really sick last night. Since she was young she has been getting headaches and her Doctor has told me she might have hypoglycemia. She has allergies and it gives her headaches. Last night she was lethargic, vomiting, and crying in pain from her headache. She has an apt. on wed. morning and I want to be prepared. Does anyone have any experiences with something like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The Doctor checked her out really good this morning and with the symptoms I explained to him he diagnosed her with migraines and put her on a nasal spray. He will monitor her for the hypoglycemia but said these symptoms are not related. Her allergies are under control and everything will be fine as long as this nasal spray works. I just don't want to see her in that much pain again. Thanks for the responses.

Hi S.,
Just wondering if an MRI or CT Scan has ever been done? Since she's 10 years old she could probably lie still enough and not need sedation. My 17 year old son was diagnosed at the age of 6 with hydrocephalus and Chiari Type I malformation (where the base of the brain is too low and protrudes into the spinal canal). He had been banging the side of his head, having intermittent headaches that would resolve spontaneously and then re-occur. We went to a neurologist, Dr. Harry Whelan, at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin who ordered an MRI. Your daughter's symptoms do sound alot like migraines, however, a consult with a neurologist probably couldn't hurt. Best of luck to you and your daughter.

So, do I understand correctly that the Dr. is saying your daughter has hypoglycemia but she has never been tested for it? Nor the allergies?
I am right with you on the demand for tests. I have no real experience with hypoglycemia in children. I think you need more definative answers and if finding a different dr. would do that, I would change dr's.

If he has never tested her for it, then how is he sure she has it? That is determined by a blood test..I have it & I was tested several years ago & had to be fasting for the test. And you have to be tested every hour or so that day for the test after they have you drink some glucose I believe..Basically the Dr. I was seeing at the time told me I cannot have sugar & need to eat small meals every 3-4 hours..Basically, no sweets, BUT, I later seen a nutritionist & she informed me that as long as I had it mixed in with my meals & or ate high protein foods included with the small amount of sweets, it would be ok..Not literally mixed in though ;) Just a very small peice of pie maybe while I am eating all my other food items on the plate for example..She also stressed the importance of eating breakfast within 45 minutes of waking & mixing a protein with a carb. For example 1/2 english muffin with a slice of cheese on top...When I ate or drank sugar, I would get a headache everyday, feel nauseous,VERY fatigued. I didn't know I had it until I was like 20, I could actually feel myself getting sicker just eating a cookie & had to go lay down...So, it does sound like she has it, but needs to be tested..Until then, I would recommend not giving her pops or sweets & try to have her snack & eat small meals & see how she feels..Eating the small meals somewhat levels the bloodsugar up & down rather than the drastic from up to down that someone with hypoglycemia would get after eating a full portion meal & feel the tiredness & some other symptoms..Best of luck to you!!

Hi S.,
I am not doubting your docs knowledge but I have a tendency to be hypoglycemic and I don't vomit. Now she is no doubt smaller than me but that still seems odd especially if he has never ran any tests to know for sure. I would definently demand blood tests, a sugar test, and a second opinion. She may vomit if she is having migraines, which can be very painful. It may also help her if you change some of the things you use in your home. She is AWFULLY young to have migraines already. I was 12 when I started getting recurring headaches, my parents were getting divorced and there was a lot of stress in our house...you might want to look at what is going on around her in her life before you blame this entirely on anything physiological.
Also, has she had her vision checked? Very easy way to get headaches, you just can't see well enough. Dehydration is key for me, I have to consistently get enough fluids throughout the day to avoid a headache. Minimum of 5 glasses, 8 oz, of fluid a day or I get really bad headaches. If I start to get one I know I can generally drink a big glass of water quickly and keep it at bay.
