Hypothetically - If a Bone in the Heel (Or Ankle) Was Fractured 4 Nights Ago...

My son suffered an episode of night terrors and jumped out of his bunk onto the carpeted floor. Yes, he's been walking (limping), not agonizing in pain, but if it is a sprain, or bruise, it could still cause, what I am guesstimating the same amount of pain he seems to be in. It's definitely NOT broken. Slight probability it could be a hairline fracture. (I am a patient expert having had 4 fractured arms as a klutzy kid.) Anyway, could they even do anything at this point?

And please, I am on a budget and my kids seem to cost me a small fortune taking them to the doctor's office and xrays are likely expensive. Not neglecting my kid...but seriously, I don't think it is fractured, but he is sick right now with a fever so EVERYTHING seems horrible to him anyway.

thanks.

ETA: We took him out of the bunk after it happened. He's been in a reg bed ever since. (Luckily we had a spare.) I'm on my way to the doctor. I'll update you later.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The doctor said "No Xray needed." The doctor even warned about too much radiation, that one doesn't want to have them done for every little sprain or bruise. He does have a nasty cold though - as I suspected. And because I saved a few hundred dollars from not needing the xray (I will wait till I get the bills of course because they ran a couple tests) Yahoooooo --- I may just have a few extra dollars for that manicure after all. As the receptionist said to my son, "You stay healthy buddy, your mama needs her mani money." ha.

I am so glad I took him in because he is on medication for his cold.

I had made the appointment at 8:00 am, just wanted your opinion. I would have taken him in anyway because his fever came back. Poor guy. He's on some medication and should be feeling right as rain soon. Thanks to everyone who cared to answer.

your question has me so furious I can barely see straight, I probably shouldn't answer it, but I'm going to.... you JUST posted a question in which you are seriously considering spending $100 on NAIL POLISH SUPPLIES, yet you are possibly going to avoid getting your child the medical care that he NEEDS? I'm sorry, you're no more an "expert" than the man on the moon - an orthopedist couldn't look at your son and tell you if he has a fracture either, that's why he needs an x-ray. four days is a LONG time to still be limping. and if you can spend $100 on nail supplies, get your kid to the doctor, that's just downright shameful. what are you gonna do if it is fractured and there is improper healing down the road requiring more expensive and invasive corrective measures? set up a payment plan if you need to, use a credit card, set up a care now account(you can usually get 0% interest for 6-24 months), but have your child seen. it's not your doctor's job to have empathy for your financial responsibility to your child, it's their job to provide competent medical care for your child - at this point, the cat's out of the bag, they know he's injured and needs an x-ray, you just might be getting a cps visit if you don't get the child some care in the next day or two as they are mandated reporters. seriously, I know medical care is expensive, our insurance SUCKS and my husband is in the medical field, and I'd probably not be so irritated if it hadn't been for your nail polish post, but geez...

Go get that X-ray. I hope it's just a bone bruise, but if it's a fracture you need to know.

ETA: Jennifer's post made my jaw drop. I don't always pay attention to the name of the OP, but she's right. You're complaining about medical bills, and then talking about spending money on expensive nail supplies, and here you're balking at taking your son to the doctor. That's pretty worrisome, dear.

Perhaps you might consider creating a budget so that you can get your financial priorities straight. I've heard that this site is excellent and worth every penny. Plus you'll save money. http://www.youneedabudget.com/

Well last year I rolled my ankle. Hard. Figured I sprained it. It would get better, right? It's just a sprain. Walked around on it for a few months...well limped by the end of the day. FINALLY dragged myself to the doctor. Found out that yes, it was a severe sprain. I also learned that sprains are often harder to treat than breaks. Wore a boot. Did physical therapy. 8 weeks later it was still hurting. Then it was discovered that I had actually fractured two bones in my foot. So back to the boot and more physical therapy. I was told the fractures would have probably been found immediately, if I hadn't waited so long to go in. I could have saved myself all the repeated therapy and all the extra doctor visits. Not to mention, that it took almost 8 months for my ankle to be back to normal. I can understand financial concerns. I had them too, since my insurance is not the best. Take him in now, before it costs you more later. And you will have the piece of mind knowing he is ok.

My daughter domplained that her foot hurt after leaving a 2.5 hour dance practice, 1 hour of that being lyrical/contemporary. I told her of course it hurt, it's a different style of dance than she is used to and she is moving in ways she hasn't before. The next night my two sons had a baseball game, and she was playing around with her friends there too, but occassionally told me it hurt. She didn't want to sit down, so I figured again it was just sore.

The next morning my husband took her to the doctor and she was in a boot for 3.5 months :(. Ugh. I know kids are expensive, but it's part of life. I hope it isn't broken. I'm still getting bills for all of the things they tried to use to make her comfortable.

I would take my kid to the Doctor.
And not have him in a bunk bed, at all.

Injuries, if not diagnosed and if not treated and if not healed correctly, can cause lifetime, problems.
And, in kids, they have "growth-plates." And IF that is injured... that is not good at all.
You need to take him to the Doctor and get an x-ray done. And get a proper diagnosis.

Plus, he is sick.
The Flu, is increasing in the USA.
My friends son, is sick now with the Flu.
And one friend I know, her son got secondary infection lung issues from it.

If it is a hairline fracture they may put him in a boot.

I think he really needs to be seen by a doctor. Share your concern re: the cost of the r-ray with the doctor. Maybe they won't feel it is warranted but if it is better to be safe than sorry. Heals and ankles are pretty important.

A few days ago you were complaining about medical bills for your child and then you posted about being a SAHM and wanting to purchase about $100 worth of nail polish stuff. Wow is all I can say.

I'm sorry but you are not an expert. You are not a doctor. I can understand waiting a day or two but this poor kid has been complaining about it for 4 days! Yes, an x-ray is in order and I'm glad to see that you are taking him there. I have had this happen several times with my kids and yes, every time there was a broken bone.

The doctor is performing a service. That service has a cost. Hopefully, it won't be too bad.

I agree with Megan S. If getting xrays for your kid puts you in such a financial bind, you need to work on your priorities. Maybe cut back on the mani's and start saving for an emergency fund. Good luck.

You must put your kid's health first. It has been 4 days since he did this and the pain hasn't subsided. Being that he is already sick it might not be a bad idea to have him seen.

I understand that you're trying to get caught up from your husband's unemployment. If you've already cut the expensive cable, cell phone bills, and eating out then it might be time for one of you to think about getting a temporary part time job in the evening until you've weathered this storm. Yes it stinks, but medical costs are a necessary evil and I don't see them getting any cheaper.

when we high a very high deductible insurance, we had to shop around for things like x-rays.. what that meant for us was going to places that were NOT in hospital, you will always pay more when a procedure is done in a hospital.. example.. about 400ish to draw blood for tests... 25 at the local blood lab.. and I got results much sooner than I did with the hospital..

two.. my son had a hairline fracture in his heel from when he jumped.. (he's VERY commonplace) ... it took about 6 months to finally healed. that means.. NO jumping around on it.... etc..
it's a tough spot to heal... since children in particular are walking around on it, let alone playing...
you may want to get a soft insert for his shoes to help absorb some of the shock from when he walks or plays.. even walking can make it ache..

good luck

Call your doctor and tell him what is going on. That doesn't cost you a thing.

Urg. I so understand. My son jumped off a play structure and sprained his ankle. Hubby took him in. $600 bucks. I about died. There has to be a cheaper way to figure out what's wrong.

I have no suggestions. If it was broken, he couldn't walk. I'd wrap it, ice it, and see what happens.

Even if it's a small fracture they may want to cast it so it doesn't do further damage to anything else. My son had a very small fracture in his ankle but because it was close to growth plates and in an area of high mobility they cast it so he couldn't cause any damage to anything else. He was casted for a while and later changed to a boot to finish healing.
Hoping it's nothing serious for your son.
