You said that the hospital told you what to take. They do this every day....we're just a bunch of moms, not doctors. (Ok, we might have a doctor or two, but seriously, we're moms.) Take what they said to take!

I know it's miserable, but I wouldn't take meds while pregnant. Try these:

-humidifier by your bed with a few drops of peppermint oil - this will help to clear your sinuses

*If you can, crack your bedroom window (and use a fan) so you can get some fresh air circulating. AC makes it easy to get congested.

-neti pot - will clear your nasal passages instantly

-ditto the Vicks on your chest and a little on the underside of your nose when you go to bed (if you're in air conditioning and can stand to wear light socks, put the vicks on your feet and sleep w/socks on)

-Emergen-C - 3x/day

-hydrate with water constantly

-Prop your pillow up a bit

-Eat well - lots of veggies and antioxidant -rich fruits and supplement with a probiotic if you can

-Sleep as much as you can manage so your body can kick this!

Good luck!!

Call your doctor's answering service and see if you can talk to a nurse. They should be able to tell you what you can do to give you some relief. I would think a nasal rinse or neti-pot would be ok since it is really just saline solution. You could also call a pharmacist. They may be able to what OTC drugs you can take that will be perfectly harmless to your unborn child. It has been several years now since I was pregnant, I don't even remember what was ok and what was not. If all else fails just shove tissue up your nose to keep it from running! Get better soon!

Added - by the way, you aren't being on "the safe side" by asking a bunch of moms who aren't doctors..."

Did you call your doctor's office and ask? We aren't doctors here and shouldn't tell you what to take.

Don't go by what you read here. Ask the doctor. You can TRY asking the pharmacist if you can't reach a doctor, but he or she might punt the question because you're pregnant.

You might try sitting up sleeping. That could help your congestion.

Good luck!

Ocean Spray? ::snortlaugh:: Are you going to spray cranberry juice up your nose? I'm guessing you meant SALINE spray. Saline nose spray or drops are perfectly safe to use. They help soften and loosen mucus in your sinus passages and encourage you to sneeze. They also soothe your sinus passages and keep them from drying out, and help reduce swelling.

Tylenol products are generally safe to take. Tylenol Cold and Sinus is what my very conservative OB recommended me to take when I was sick. I was also given permission to take regular Sudafed but it didn't work for me at all. Robitussin DM is good for coughs.

You also need to drink more fluids than usual. A cool mist humidifier is great. Don't lay back all the way. Prop up so that you get proper drainage when you lay down.

Anyway, the advice I'm offering is what my own OB told me to do but you really, really need to listen to your own OB/midwife. There's probably a reason specific to YOU and your pregnancy that you're given the advice that you're given.

You can take Benadryl when pregnant, this will dry up the secretions. Just take it no more than every 4 hours. Also a mix of 8 oz sat water and 1 tsp vinegar, warm it in microwave and spray into nostrils. Warning, this makes you fill like your head is on fire, but it works.

I would ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking anything. And, be careful of products like Robitussin. They have lots of different Robitussins now , Robitussin DM, Robitussin cough and cold, etc., and they all contain different active ingredients. So, make sure you purchase the specific Robitussin that the doctor says is ok for you to take.
I used Ocean Nasal Spray (yes, that is what it's called:) when I was pregnant and I used a Neti-pot - Neti Pot really worked for me!

I'd try vicks vaporub... google and see if its safe, at least you dont ingest it, and you can rub some on the bottom of your feet and on your chest... it might help ya some.
You could also eat something that would make your nose drain, like a hot chili pepper, they are good for you.
