Hello moms,
I am @ 4months pregnant with my 4th, and I have run into a dilemma, nothing too serious, but I hope someone can help. I am Lactose intolerant, and so when I drink milk, I get cramps, I also try OJ but it gives me heartburn. I want something GOOD for the baby, I don't drink caffienated drinks, like coffee, some teas, not even pop. I don't drink carbonated drinks that much. I drink water a lot, but you can only take so much during the day. Of course flavored waters I haven't tried, but don't they all have artificial sweetners? So I was thinking how is Soy milk? I hear it can be pretty tasty, but is there any concerns with pregnant woman drinking too much? I hope someone has some suggestions...I'll be waiting with my tall glass of water. Thank you

What can I do next?

D.,
I found myself SO thirsty when I was pregnant - I drank tons of water - but had to lay off just about everything else. I found that I preferred 'cutting' fruit juice (don't pre-mix it with water, you'll get sick!) with water, to having the entire sweet thing right then (barring cranberry, would drink water first then cranberry, yum!)

Soy milk is delicious - it is much better than it used to be. If you are looking for a close match to Milk - try Silk plain, ice cold. If you are looking for slightly sweet, and have ever had a 'steamer' (steamed, flavored milk) try Westsoy Vanilla in the microwave (too long to wait for the stove! :)

There are other 'milks' out there too - hazelnut, rice, almond, all of them taste pretty good, if you're not doing a taste test with milk, they all have their own flavor.

Excess thirst is a major sign of diabetes, so make sure you mention this to your doctor.

Sorry, don't know much about soy milk.

Try adding some lemon or lime slices to your water. Also, there are tons of decafinated tea flavors. Buy some tea bags and make your own iced tea.

I'd try to stay away from the juices. Or if you do drink juice, water it down some.

Good Luck and Congratulations.

Definately mention this to your primary care provider & check on the diabetes issue. It's a big problem! Still, you should be drinking LOTS while you're pregnant. Just think of all the bodily fluids you're body is working with increasing right now. Don't know if you have weight issues, but remember that women need to increase their caloric intake in pregnancy, so sugar sweetened decaf iced tea & lemonade are options (if you have ruled out diabetes)as are fruit juices like apple & grape juices. Artificial sweeteners haven't been proven or shown to be a problem in moderation either. Drinking pure water with a slice of lime or lemon is almost always a good idea & try the Celestial Seasons fruit teas (don't really have tea in them). Mix it up & you shouldn't have a problem with too much of any one thing.

Soy milk is pretty tasty but no one should drink too much. I am not sure how much is too much but your doctor should be able to tell you.

I found that grapefruit juice didn't bother me as much as OJ did - I know most people gross out when I tell them this but if you put a little bit of salt in the juice it cuts down on the acidity making it more tolerable on your stomach.

There are many decaf teas out there in some really great flavors. You can also jazz up plain water by adding fresh cut slices of lemon, lime, strawberries, etc... gives a nice light fruit essence to the water. ANY fruit juice is good. I make my own juice blends like Cranberry, Apple & Raspberry or Cranberry and Grape. YUM. Just check the lables. Get 100% juice. Anything that says "cocktail" on it is usually high in added sugar and low on actual juice.

Those are definitely not the words we want to hear from a pregnant woman. Check with your doctor on why you are so thirsty, might be a sign of diabetes. Until you check with him, I'd stick to water and nothing sugary. Also check with your doctor on goats milk and ask about how much soy milk you may be allowed. Once you've checked with your dr. and he's out ruled diabetes, why don't you stick to the natural stuff....in a blender, throw some watermelon or cantalope or peaches or apricots or berries....blend them down with water and enjoy them. This will give you your own natural versionj of fruit drinks and all you are mixing in there are fruit and water. Example, 1/2 cup of fruit, 2 cups of water. You can also add ice and make a slushy. you can also have 8 oz of water with a splash of bottled juice, that way you are diluting all the sugar. but please, check with your dr. about the diabetes.Good Luck!

I think soy milk tastes quite good. But since I'm also drinking TONS of fluids lately...I've been doing a small amount of juice (cranberry, orange, lemonade, whatever) with lots of seltzer. The lemon & lime seltzers are great. Totally refreshing & yummy!

I agree with the check for diabetes, but I found that drinkng seltzer was a good compromise for something different. I would sometimes even mix it like 1/2 selzer and 1/2 Juice to really get a different taste. It was refreshing and would break up drinking all water all the time :-)

Water has always been my drink of choice and I sometimes have had enough of it as well. When I was pg and needed something to quench my thirt instead of water I would drink decaffenated iced tea, lemonade, or eat ice pops. Congrats on your pregnancy. i wish you a happy & healthy one!

i drank one or 2 big glasses of soy milk every day with each pregnancy, it helped me a lot with all my stomach issues, mainly wicked reflux. i like vanilla mixed with about 1/4 chocolate. it does have a lot of sugar. good luck with your pregnancy!

Have you tried other fruit juices? Apple, Pineapple, cranbery and grape? As for tea, I have been told by a few experts that if you drink one glass you pee out the equlivent of 2. That is why when you go to the gym everyone is drinking water. That is everyone who is serious about their health.
