SO, over christmas we all had a cold and from sneezing or coughing, we ( my chiro and i) thought i may have fractured a rib and would need xrays. This was now Dec 31st.. There was no where i would get xrays done that friday. Saturday morning i was sitting at computer and my hub had to pull my youngest out from behind me. In process he threw his head into my rid that was hurt full force. My hub and i ended up going to ER that night. Skip to Tuesday now. I had my hub home that day. He was in shower at the time this happened...I had been lying on thw couch and needed to get up. Between the pain in my rib and standing up too fast i blacked out, falling straight down on my tail bone...back to er....I have a minor to severe tail bone fracture....how can it be minor to severe?... Oh well, its fractured, When i went to my regular doctor i was put on morphine three times daily with a whole lotta other non narcotic pain meds. I ask for no more then what would get me to friday. I said this thinkking i would not be in pain by then. its now thursday my youngest yet again set into hurt me worse...he took a nerf sword which doesnt sound bad but let me tell you and he lsmmed it against my back and tailbone. i almost passed out from the pain yet again my hub was there to tcatch me and get me some place where i could try and get comfy...long story long....I feel like a failure if i call my doc and say i need more. but i do. Is it wrong to go against what i promised myself. I would ask for something lower in the narcotic field i cant handle morphine for much longer, so like 5/500 vicodin or something in that field.the non narcotics only last maybe an hour at most. and if anyone out there has injured their tailbone give me some support cause i feel like i will never sit down with out a donut pillow again.

What can I do next?

:( You should call your dr. There's nothing wrong with accepting the fact that you're in pain and need something to help you get through the day. Your body will actually heal faster of you are not in constant pain. I understand not wanting to take them (I've had 2 c-sections so I really do understand). But to get back on your feet quicker, you need to allow your body the time to heal. Calling your dr does not make you a failure. I hope you feel better soon, and that nothing else happens!

My brother broke his in college. "Sledding" down a snowy hill on a piece of cardboard and hitting the curb at the bottom. OUCH. (brilliant college kids, lol).

I don't know how long it takes to heal, but I know it hurts. It's good that you are being cautious with the medications, but don't suffer needlessly either. There is a reason the doctor was prescribing them for you... he expected you to NEED them! You can always not take them if you are feeling better. I'd rather have them over the weekend and decide I don't need them than to just suffer like that.

Here's how to justify this to yourself: You promised yourself no more morphine by Friday. You made this arrangement with you BEFORE you took another blow from your child. He re-aggervated the already aggervated. You weren't planning on that.

There's no sense in being in terrible pain. If you can get something to help you then do it. The doc isn't going to let you go over-board.

You have to stay on top of the pain. If you need pain medication...you need it. If you take it as directed and keep in touch with your doctor you shouldn't have any problems coming off of it when you no longer need it.

I recently herniated three discs in my lower back, one tore severely and caused numbness, no reflexes and severe pain down one leg.

It has been three months with three to six months to go before it should be completely healed up. (I could have had surgery...but with 2 small kids at home with no help...that was the last choice option).

Go see or talk with your doctor. Maybe a pain management doctor might be helpful also. Have them explain to you how long the injury will take to heal and about how long the doctor thinks you will need pain medication.

I was able to come off narcotics/opiates once I was given an epidural steroid injection...I don't know if anything like that is available to you to help with the pain or if that is only for back injuries.

You and your husband have to really talk to your kids about your injury. My son and daughter are now very careful with me and will race to pick stuff up off the floor for me telling me not to bend over...and always ask me which leg is my good leg, before climbing in my lap. Make your kids feel important in helping you heal.

If you need to private message me you can because I know the awfulness that is trying to heal from an injury and run a household. It can become very depressing how long the healing process can take, but I keep telling myself it will heal. You will heal too...but don't be a martyr. HUGS!!

Tail bones take a long time to heal. And it REALLY hurts.

I hurt mine once, fell down the stairs. It was not broken... but bruised badly. Even that, took months for the pain to go away.

Your kids, HAVE TO be talked to about it. You and Hubby, sit down with them and EXPLAIN that Mommy is hurt. Do not hurt her. She is not better yet. AND Hubby will continue to have to help.... and referee them....

Sure pain meds. But be careful... because many of them are addictive....
so talk to your Doctor about that.... and do not take anything that will make the effects of it.... worse. ie: drinking with it etc. Alcohol is a bad mix, with pain meds.

all the best,
Susan

Girl, call and get those pain meds if you need them! Seriously!

I know tailbone pain all too well. I was a cheerleader for many, many years and I was a flyer. Which means, I was dropped...a lot. So I had several tail bone injuries. I don't think I ever sat flat on my bum throughout my whole HS career! As a result, now, as an adult, I sit in the strangest positions because it just became a habit for me to sit on my leg so I could prop myself to not be sitting flat.

Tailbone injuries take a very long time to heal. Good luck!

If you're in pain, and you have obvious fractures, you need something to help you function throughout the day. I would call and ask for a few more days' supply.

It takes a looong time for a tailbone to heal. You can't take morphine or vikes for that long. Get yourself on Aleve or what the doc rec's as per the dosage chart. Take it regularly.
Why is your child intentionally hurting you? Your hubby needs to address that severely asap.

I would talk to your doctor, there is nothing wrong with telling them you're still in pain & just tell them the morphine is too strong for you...... I honestly think I've broken/fractured my tailbone also, I fell really hard right on my butt when I was pregnant with our son & I had issues after that but since having our daughter (over a year ago) it's gotten MUCH worse, but the doctors I've gone to won't do anything for it, they won't even do xrays, I can't go from the standing to sitting position or vice versa, or walk up & down stairs without almost collapsing from all the pain, I know how much pain I'm in hun, it sounds like you're worse off than I am, I'd call them RIGHT NOW & tell them you need something to help!
Good luck!

My first child broke my tailbone when he came out. It took nearly a year to completely heal and hurt like a "you know what". I spent most of my time sitting on one hip or the other since I couldn't sit properly. I never took any pain meds b/c I was alone with the baby more often than not so I didn't feel it was a safe option. Time, that's all I have to offer you as hope, time. It will get better. Sorry for you b/c I do feel your pain!

A tailbone break is a definite and literal pain in the butt.
There's no putting it in a cast (or putting your butt in a sling) :-)
Your kids need to understand Mom is hurt and they need to be gentle.
You'll heal up slowly but surely. Try to be patient.

A fracture is a crack in the bone. Most patients and doctors agree that fractures are far worse than a clean break because you have to wait for the bone to heal. In the meantime you also probably have some swelling too. It is going to take a long time for the fracture to heal and the pain to dissipate. In the meantime you sound like you need some responsible pain management. Pain management involves taking the medication before the pain gets to be unbearable and understanding that it will take the medication at least 30 minutes to kick in good for any pain. Keep this in mind as you heal. One more thing here, you will need all kinds of help with the kids while you heal and while you are on medication. Now is not the time to be superwoman. It is a great time to teach your sons how to care for you. This is a skill their future wives will appreciate and so will you when they are grown and you are older. Enjoy being the queen of the house while everybody else takes care of you and your needs in the meantime and between time. You and your husband should have an age appropriate conversation with your kids about your injury and what you need. Heal quickly.

I fractured my tailbone when I fell on ice. It takes a long time to heal. I found that pain medications (vicodine) were not nearly as good as taking 3 advil (600mg)around the clock. You need an anti-inflammatory, not just something to mask the pain - ask your doctor about it. Also, I found that the donut pillow made me feel worse than just sitting on something firm. I don't know why but I sat on a notebook for weeks and it really helped. Good luck - it's a long process!

Hey Mama-

I had a friend who fell on a concret step a few years ago and broke her... too. She was laid-up for about (mid July) 4 weeks, BUT was able to go on her trip to Europe in September. She walked about 5 miles a day without a problem.

On top of that, she is in her 50's, and not a quick healing 20 something.

There is hope, but this is the tough time.

Good Luck!
