I Had to Stop What I Was Doing to Post This...

Ok, so I'm wondering if I'm weird... Lol. I was doing some Spring cleaning, straightening up, and storing. I came across my breast pump carrying bag, and was taking out napkins, wipes, and magazines that I had stored in there, to throw away. I then saw that my insulated milk storage case was open, and had an old paper towel in it. I took the case out of the bag to take the napkin out, and a scent wafted across my nose. I lifted the case to my nose, and was OVERWHELMED with such a wonderful feeling. It smells like breast milk in there, and it was like I was immediately taken back to the time that I had a soft, swishy, cuddly, loveable newborn/infant. I mean, it truly stopped me in my tracks, and I sat down and remembered that wonderful time. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my rambunctious toddler, and all of his independance, but I so miss my "new baby". *Sigh*. It makes me sad, and of course, immediately made me want a newborn. I'm sure I'll come to my senses when I pick him up from school this afternoon, but for now, I'll just enjoy this feeling :-)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Awwww, thanks everyone for reassuring me that I'm not a weirdo for sitting here enjoying the scent of my own breastmilk. Lol. It truly was an overwhelming feeling.
For those of you who suggested I have another, it's definitely in my "near future" plans. I just need to make sure some other areas of my life are "in order" first. :-)

Jenno7- yes, the smell is still there, and it is a good one. It smells just like his little baby breathe used to smell. So sweet :-) It hasn't been THAT long; he's only 20 months.

I have a friend who had a baby two years ago. When he was born I would go over just to smell his little baby head.
My husbands grandmother had 12 children because she loved the babies stuff so much.
You are not alone.

I didn't BF, but I know exactly what you're talking about. I wish time would stand still. I'm loving where my 22 month old is right now. I just want her to stay like this forever (and then I won't get any older too, right?)

I have a 14 yr old and 11 yr old and I miss the baby days so much. I have two nieces who are now grown up married ladies with babies and I really love holding those soft warm cuddley babies and I feel a tug in my breasts when I do - I loved nursing my babies. Go ahead have a nother baby - that toddler needs a sibling!

I had to laugh. Wait until your child is a teen, then you will REALLY want that feeling back! =) Seriously, each age makes you sigh with relief that the last is over but also makes you mourn for it as well. I look at my 26 year old (her birthday is tomorrow!) daughter and I cannot believe time has gone by so quickly. Enjoy your moments with your children, take time to smell the burp rags. =)

No, you are not weird..your hormones and sense of smell are strong and healthy. Actually, our sense of smell is one of the strongest wired connections in our brains. So it stands to reason that the smell of your breast milk would bring back these loving memories.

I was holding a newborn baby a few years ago when all of a sudden I had extreme let down in my breasts and nipples. I had stopped nursing a good 4 year prior to that. Our bodies and brains are full of memories.

Thats sweet. Did you know the sense of smell can bring back memories more than sight ,hearing or touch. Just think, someday you will open a drawer and the smell of old dirty socks will remind you of your high schooler who is now off to college on his own. (o:

I love when something stops you in your tracks like that.
The last time that happened for me I was walking past my little girls room and she was singing you are my sunshine to her pillow pet. She took me back to all the times I've sang that lullabye to my littles. Now she's singing herself to sleep and rocking her little snuggie to sleep.

Scent is very closely tied with memories because the olfactory bulb is part of the limbic system so no, you aren't crazy at all. When I was pregnant with my now one year old I took my dog outside in the winter and smelled wood smoke. I immediately started crying because it reminded me of my parents (we had a wood stove growing up) and I missed them and had raging pregnancy hormones. Enjoy your memories!

How sweet!
Yeah, it happens to me too, I just went this weekend to BabiesRus because we went out and stared raining so I went there to buy a rain coat.
So much baby clothes! Little, tiny, super cute clothes.
Of course my toddler is still little, specially compare to my 13 year ols who almost is as tall as me, but the new baby clothes is just so ahhh!
I wanted to go back home and tie my husband and get it done! lol.
They should put a sign in BabiesRus "Enter if you dare" or something like that.

I don't think you're weird. I remember when my niece was born and I held her for the first time. I blurted out to my husband "I want another baby!!" We're programmed to react that way. Enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling.

I have three kids 5,1 that will be two in July and a 10 month old and I am so not looking forward to my 10 month old growing into a toddler like my 1 year old is... I am looking forward to being able to spend less on diapers and maybe gaining more sleep but honestly the smell of my baby and her exploring things is so much fun. I so understand what you are feeling.. and yes once your son comes home how quickly you will forget it but it will come back.. have you thought about having another baby? My last two are 11 months apart and honestly I wouldnt change it for the world!! If I was able to provide financially I would have more! Good luck

OMG! I KNOW exactly how you feel! I was fortunate enough to breastfeed both of my daughters. I would not have missed that time for the world! The "smells" were amazing.....sweet breastmilk, baby lotions and powders, etc. I actually had emotional withdrawals as they were growing up! They are 21 and 19 now, and I STILL think about those times.

I'm pretty sure you are normal! :o)

As others have said, you are perfectly sane. As a hypnotherapist olfactory sense is the most powerful.
You are connected to your child in a profound way when you are nursing; and that memory will always be with you.
You might want to consider volunteering with La Leche League if you have an intense pull around breastfeeding.
