YOu can try pushing fluids. But if it doesn't resolve quickly it is better to into the doctor. I have seen girls in the office (at medical clinic) that have let it go and end up with a severe infection
I just went to the doctor a month ago for bronchitis, and he put me on Antibiotics. I really do not want to go back again for a UTI. Does anyone know how to get rid of it without antibiotics. I know Cranberry juice helps but does it clear it up completely?Any suggestions or homeopathic remedies would be greatly appreciated!!
I called the doctor and got some antibiotics. I also got some cranberry concentrated pills to help prevent future problems. Thanks everyone for your advice.

The most common homeopathics for bladder infections are Cantharis and Staphysagria. If you know about homeopathics there are certain symptoms that help you decide which one to begin with first. After three doses of one and there is no change, then you try the next one. Do avoid antibiotics at all costs in treating this. It may very well have been the prior antibiotics you took that set you up for this. I hope this helps. They are not any fun.
I have had UTI's before and Cranberry juice really does work but only if you drink it all day, it takes a little longer to clear up, but it will clear it up.
Look it up on webmd.com and see what there is available for home remedies. I think you may need to go to the doc, they will want to rule any other complications out before treatment.
People may tell you to drink cranberry juice. That is right, however, drinking cranberry juice is not enough. You need to go to the store and buy the cranberry pills in the pharmacy. And take as directed. (It won't hurt you to take more though) The reason cranberry works, is there is an enzyme in the cranberry that attaches to the urinary tract that does not allow the bacteria that causes a UTI to attach. The concentration of the cranberry in pill form is so much more effective and juice has a lot of unwanted sugar.
I hope this helps!

Cranberry juice can actually make a UTI worse because of the sugar in most juices. So be careful with that. There are cranberry pills that can be taken instead and LOTS of water! At least 32 if not 64 oz per day should be consumed. There is OTC med called AZO that will help with the pain until you can flush it out of your system. This is only in early prevention though, if you've had it too long going into the doc's office might be inevitable.
Cranberry juice can pretty much clear it up but it if doesn't I would go see the doctor. Another suggestion might be to take cranberry pills. You can usually find them in the vitamin isle at Walmart. Cranberry juice is not only good for UTIs but it is good for all types of viral infections. Hope this helps. Also, drink lots of water to help flush it out.
I have used cranberry juice in the past and it does work but you have to drink a lot of it. It can't be like craberry juice cocktail or anything like that it has to be just straight cranberry juice. Also there is an over the counter medication called AZO that is specifically for UTI's. I have never tried it but, it might be worth a shot. Hope this helps.
I get UTI's all the time. You can't get rid of it without antibiotics. However there are things you can do to soothe the symptoms until you can get to the doctor. yes, cranberry juice is good, but I like to use cranberry pills. They seem to work better, because it's more concentrated. Also, get some Azo gesic. It's a overthecounter UTI medication that helps with the symptoms. Again, these aren't cures. THey just help you feel normal until you can make it to the doc. Don't let it get out of hand. If the infection gets too bad, it could mean a hospital stay not just a doctor visit.
Yes! You can! I did, just last week.
First, Pomegranate is MUCH stronger than cranberry. You can get PomeGreat made by Jarrow, pomegranate concentrate at Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods. I add about a tablespoon to Traditional Medicinals Cran-Aide tea. I kept drinking it all day.
Also, echinacea tincture every two hours. And Uva Ursi several times a day.
Drink, drink, drink, drink!!!!
And get plenty of rest.
Take good care.
Blessings,
M.
The antibiotics you were on helped to give you the UTI. Also watch for vaginal infection. The warning on the medicine will say this. Sorry not much help on how to get rid of it. E-military and have great medical coverage I let them fix me.
Hi, I get these all the time. I always buy the organic Cranberry juice that you dilute with water. A lot of times I will drink a gallon of water and try to mix a little of the cranberry juice in each glass and it really helps with the pain and usually goes away all together if I keep drinking fluids. They also have a new product called AZO UTI, never tried it but it may work.
Hope this helps!
There isn't too much you can do that will be full proof without going to the doctor. The best thing I have tried is taking cranberry pills. You can get them at any natural food market like Whole Foods. They are concentrated cranberry so it's like drinking a whole bunch of cranberry juice at once. It usually helps when I take them. It depends on how severe your UTI is on whether it will make it go away or not. These pills usually work amazing if you can catch it right at the very beginning or even for prevention. You will want to drink a lot water as well. That should help flush it out.
Saying that, you should be very careful not to wait too long before going to the doctor. I know it is annoying going to the doctor, but if it doesn't go away you really need to go to the doctor. The infection can spread to your bladder if you don't take care of it. Take care! I hope you find relief soon.
I had a UTI during the month of November...first, sorry...those really suck! Anyway, I went to the doctor right away and she gave me medication for it. I took it as directed until the pain and discomfort subsided. As soon as I felt better and didn't have the pain to remind me to take it, I kept forgetting! So it came back. I had already been to the doctor for it and I'd been in so many times with the children. I was fed up with going to the doctor. So I tried to 'cure' it myself. I looked up home remedies, researched, bought lots of supplements (baking soda, apple cidar vinegar, Uristat, cranberry juice...the real stuff which is pricey and not so easy to find, cranberry supplements, drank tons and tons of water...in other words, I spent a lot of time, effort and money just to avoid going to the doctor again which would have been less time and money because I was simply being an insane hard head. I ended up back at the doctor anyway and this time I took all my medication! This was one of my adult DUH experiences I do not plan to repeat.
Cranberry juice has sugar which only feeds the infection. So the better choice is to take cranberry in capsule form. Most health foods store carry it. Solary brand is called CranActin. Another option is apple cider vinegar, put 1 TBSP in 8 oz. of water and drink. That's what I did the last time I had a UTI, cleared it right up.
Staphysagria is a homeopathic remedy that works pretty well at the first sign of an infection. But if your infection is more advanced you should definitely get it cultured and get an antibiotic. If left untreated, a UTI can turn into a more serious kidney infection. If you can get the staphysagria, dissolve a pellet in 4 oz pure water, then take a teaspoon every 15 minutes until your symptoms are gone. I don't know where to tell you to get the staphysagria, I got mine from my wonderful doctor who is also a homeopathic specialist. Good luck!
UTI's can go to your kidneys rather quickly if left untreated. And a kindney infection is much worse so I ould just go to the Dr. and get it cleared up. Cranberry is great prevention. I take cranberry pills so that I don't get one but it won't cure one.
First of all, drink lots and lots of water everyday and at least 60 oz or more. If you aren't use to drinking this much water, your body is not use to it so you'll have to go potty more often. Second, there are two things I suggest you buy, and you can get both from your local health food store. The first is called Cranactin. It's purpose is to help with UTI's directly. It's a capsule of mostly Vitamin C and Cranberry extract. Second, I suggest taking acidolphilus. Your body has a balance of good and bad bacteria. When the balance is tipped, you get bacterial infections. Right now you have too much bad bacteria overgrowth causing the bacterial infection in your urinary tract. Acidolphilus is a good bacteria that you can take to help balance it out. It's a white powder that you should get in capsule form, and it has to be refrigerated. You can take one capsule daily even when not sick to help your bacteria flora, but I suggest taking two when you have a bacterial infection. The last suggestion I have is to avoid sugar until your UTI is gone, and with this in mind, if you do want to drink cranberry juice, make sure it isn't sweetened and doesn't have any added sugar. These little things I did made a big difference in my getting over my many UTI's and made it a lot faster.
I had UTI just after I got married, but I had received meds from the doc at my pre-marital exam, so I had medication to get rid of mine, which was great b/c it was really bad. My best friend also got it and she tried to drink the cranberry juice and get rid of it without going to the doc. She said at first it seemed to go away, but then it came back even worse and she went to the doc and got meds. I believe that is the only way you can get rid of it--with medication. You might be able to call your doctor and just get a prescription put in without actually going in to see him/her, but I am not totally positive on that, but it's worth a try.

Hi there, not to get too personal, but are you sure it is a UTI? Some women get a yeast type infection when they are on antibiotics if they don't supplement with Acidophilus. But if you really do believe it is a UTI, it is best that you go to either the dr, walmart dr, or urgent care. An untreated UTI can get a lot worse. Keep in mind that going to the walmart dr or urgent care is only your co-pay and you don't have to wait too long in line if you time it right. Even if there is a wait at walmart, they'll give you a restaurant type buzzer so you can shop until it is your turn... Very cool in my opinion. I hope this helps. Take care.
You really have to be careful with trying to take care of this without a Dr.'s help. You can try the following, there are otc cranberry pills and pain-reducers for UTI. IF it hasn't cleared up with in 2-3 days. I recommend seeing a dr. If left untreated - a UTI can cause kidney failure / damage. Less caffine and lots and lots of water.
good luck.

Try buying cranberry pills and taking those. If you have an infection where you have a fever, pain and are peeing blood you should go to the doctor. If it isn't that severe try the cranberry pills. I use those to prevent to if I feel one is coming on.
Hi B.,
Cranberry juice and tablets can help, but it depends on how bad your UTI is. Just a heads up, I waited to get my first UTI treated and it got really bad pretty fast. I ended up having the infection reach my kidneys, it was the worst pain I have ever been through. My doctor sent me to the emergency room, so please save yourself the time, money, and a trip to the emergency room and just go to the doctor.
I wouldn't wait, it could turn into a Pylo. If that happens you will have to be on IV antibiotics and fluids.
Drink Cranberry juice or take Cranberry capsules found in the vitamin section of just about any store. I buy mine at Wal-Mart. I also take the Cranberry capsules on a regular basis to keep from getting UTIs. This approach probably will take a few days, but it beats being on antibiotics again.
Try AZO it is a cranberry supplement that has worked wonders for me. A couple years ago a nurse recommended this when I had a UTI and it really does the trick. You should be able to find it just about anywhere, although I usually get it at Walmart.
A good homeopathic remedy for a UTI is colodial silver, a naturally occuring antibiotic. It's not as damaging to your good flora as prescription drugs. You will also need probiotics, to put back what antibiotics take out. Go to a health food store and ask qtys, etc. Also, you probably need garlic and vitamin C. It is my experience that we get UTI's when our immune system is low and our "weak" organ goes first. Garlic and vitamin C will help boost your immune system. You should also lay off sugar and white flour for a while, they will supress your immune system and leave you vulnerable to illnesses.
I am not a doctor and not authorized to treat disease, I am just a mom who is passionate about this stuff and wrote a book about eating healthy called "Shopper's Guide to Healthy Living." Good luck! K. Loidolt
Hi B.
I am sorry you are feeling bad. However, I would recommend you go to the doctor and get the infection treated correctly. I am like you, I hate drugs, but in case of an infection you should get rid of it immediately. The problem with a UTI is that if you do not treat it correctly it can become chronic and it can spread to your kidneys. I am telling you this 'cuz it happened to my mom and it took her years to go back to normal. Cranberry juice helps prevent the infection and it also can help to decrease the pain, keep drinking it as long as you like, but please go to the doctor.
Go back to the docter. sorry but a uti is serious, it can move to the bladder or even cause kidney problems. after the docter has given you some meds drink cranberry juice or even take a pill every day to prevent future breakouts. it also could be a yeast infection
I have chronic UTI's unfortunately and unless they are really bad I just do the following. They have a pain releiver you can buy over the counter now which basically numbs your urinary tract so it isn't painful while you are trying to get rid of the UTI. It is called Uristat or they have another brand called AZO or something similar. It will turn your urine orange so don't be alarmed. And just drink a lot of water and cranberry juice if you want or take cranberry pills. If it doesn't start getting better after the 2nd or 3rd day then you should go to the doctor for antibiotics.
B.--when I had one, I was told that cranberry juice doesn't do so much to make it go away as it does to prevent it. I was peeing blood and I was so thirsty, that I drank 2 quarts of water in about 4 hours (1 pint on the hour). I kept that up the next day. I don't want to tell you anything that is dangerous--I obviously didn't drown--but it seemed to go away by itself. Good Luck!
I put together an herbal tea that I start drinking at the first sign of infection. You can get these from any heathfood store:
uva ursi
horsetail
juniper berries
In the meantime, Tylenol reduces pain.
I have had success with this treatment and am always happy to avoid antibiotics when possible.
Believe it or not you can a Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-- even though the product was never been advertised for this use. Really does work-Also lots and lots of water.
Let me tell you what homeopathy is before you think that they could actually be a remedy.
Basically, the idea is that like cures like. Just which herb this can be varies a lot with each practitioner since there has not been clinical testing on which ones actually work. Probably because none of them will work at the doses you get in homeopathy.
The more important issue in homeopathy is that any ingredient is diluted beyond any possible use. The idea behind homeopathy is that the more the herb or whatever ingredient they've decided is 'like' the disease is diluted, the more powerful it is.
Many remedies are so 'powerful', in other words, so diluted, that there cannot even be a molecule of the original herb in it. They say what is important is that the 'memory' of the energy of the herb is in the sugar or water base.
As far as home remedies are concerned, unsweetened cranberry or blueberry juice is still your best bet. However, don't let it go on too long if you see no improvement because the infection can travel up to your kidney and cause serious damage.
Sorry about the horrible timing and good luck. Just make sure you eat plenty of yogurts or take acidophilus to keep your digestive track bacteria in good balance when you go on antibiotics.
You need to get antibiotics again, sorry but it is an infection and if you don't it can lead to more serious problems. Have your dr put you on something directly for UTI's. Hang in there. BTW, cranberry juice helps PREVENT UTIS not cure them. There isn't anything herbal you can take either. Just call your Dr and see if he will call you in something.
When I was pregnant with my second child, I had great success going to a Chinese Medicine practitioner and taking the herbs they prescribed. There are also many "western" herbs that are beneficial in treating (and curing) UTIs without antibiotics. I suggest getting a good herbal from the booksotre, or even better, research naturopaths and Chinese herbalists in your area for more personalized attention.
UTI's can be dangerous not to mention painful if left untreated. The infection can spread up through your kidneys. There is over the counter medicine that can cover the symptoms but doesn't take away the infection. Cranberry juice is a myth! It is actually the vitamin C that helps by increasing acid in your system, but it won't make it go away. You should get an antibiotic!
B.,
Go to your health food store and get cranberry capsules, grapefruit seed extract capsules, garlic capsules are good to take also.
Since you were on an antibiotic you need to take a liquid of acidopilus. They come in flavored varieties. This rebuilds the good bacteria in your intestine that helps keep you healthy.
Drink lots of water to flush your system out, and to rehydrate yourself if you have been sick. Most of us walk around dehydrated. That is why when you go to the er one of the first tings they do is put people on sayline solution to rehydrate them. Not sure if that is spelt correctly.
Go in to your local health food store and talk to them. Take care
J.
I used to try cranberry, and used the concentrated powder capsules that you can get in the drugstore (the juice typically has too much sugar). But, it didn't always work, and one time the UTI developed into a serious kidney infection and I was hospitalized for 3 days. Now, I ALWAYS go get antibiotics.
Hi B.,
I have been able to clear up UTI infections on my own with cranberry, started right upon the first symtoms. But as suggested before, you will need to drink quite a bit and TONS of water. Cranberry supplements are also available, and are easier to take than the juice. Cranberry straight is quite bitter and difficult to force yourself to drink as much as you need to clear up. If you treat yourself and don't get relief within 24 hrs, I would get to the doctor, because the infection can move further up the tract and could become a Kidney infection.
Good Luck,
TRUDI

I see you have alreadly gotten antibiotics, but when I had one I just drank a lot of water, like 2-3 gallons a day!! I had to pee a lot and it hurt but the water flushed out the infection and lowered on concertration of my urine so it didn't hurt as much.
Hi. Cranberry juice helps, but it's so diluted that it doesn't do it for me quick enough, if you know what I mean. I went to the health food store -- a good one that has fresh stuff, and not expired bottles! -- and bought some capsules of concentrated cranberries. I think one type I use is called Cranactin. I'm sure the sales people can get you headed in the right direction. I went to the doctor for the first few times with this, then discovered these conc capsules, and I've never gone back to the doctor since. I start popping those just as soon as I feel the first inkling of pain. It's worked great for me. I hope you have success as well.
I get them occasionally and always take cranberry extract capsules, or just down cranberry juice (the real stuff, not the fake stuff that's pure HFCS). It goes away within a couple days. Not sure if that works for everyone, but works for me! Good luck, hope you feel better soon :)
I went through a period when I seemed to get UTIs frequently. Going to the doctor got real old and I didn't want to go on antibiotics either. It got so I could feel one coming, just odd feeling, and I would start tanking water. Lots and lots of water. It just flushed it out of my system. I also have the rest of a prescription called pyridium, which was described to me as like aspirin for the urinary tract. It takes the pain away. Taking one of those helps until the flushing is done.
It might depend on how advanced and intense the UTI is, but cranberry juice does help. I have also heard that drinking Alka-Seltzer helps clear it up as well, especially at the first sign of symptoms. I had a UTI recently and drinking both of these along with a lot of water seemed to have cleared it up just fine for me.
Homeopathic remedies for UTI are *all* for prevention. Go see your doctor. It'll get worse every day. If it spreads to your bladder or kidneys you're in for a world of recurring hurt.
>prevention
remember cranbery juice has to be real juice from a healthfood store - not cocktail juice. drink more water, too.
The best prevention is to pee immediately after sex every time.
As funny as it may sound, the best cure I have used without going to the doctor is to drink a beer. I would drink one beer in the morning, and another in the afternoon or evening. Two or three should do it. It may not taste so good, but trust me, it works!! I was told it helps because of the sulfur in beer.
I have gotten UTIs a lot. I've also had three or four kidney infections, so I know how bad UTIs can get if they are not cleared up. It's frustrating to have to see a doctor when you know it's a UTI, and you have to in order to get antibiotics. They won't just call in a prescription for you.
Anyway, my mom told me about the beer thing a few months ago when I got my last UTI. This was the first time I tried it, and I was amazed how well it worked. It cleared it right up. I also took about 2,000 milligrams of Vitamin C along with the beer, which is safe to do because your body excreets it when you urinate, just like B vitamins. It sure beats having to always go to the doctor!!!
Hi Britney hope i can elp and its not too late but i just got over one and unfortunatly you have to take medicine to get over it completly but cramberry juice helps allot evepcially helps from getting a UTI but now and days if u go to like Walgreens you actually can get medicine over the conter but id recomed drinking cranberry juice too! good luck
Hi, B.. Well, I just went through the same thing. I get these pretty frequently and usually they heal by themselves. However, no matter how much cranberry juice or detox tea I drank this time it didn't go away. This past Monday I went in to the doc and she told me that my UTI had into a kidney infection - and it was so painful I was practically begging for antibiotics. So, as much as I'm not a fan of going to the doc, or antibiotics, I would say go in if it lasts more than two days and especially if you start having a fever, nausea or severe back pain - all are symptoms of a kidney infection.
Also, after you have sex make sure you urinate (so hot to schedule sex around peeing, I know, but it helps a lot) and drink cranberry juice once a day after you've healed. I also noticed that the less alcohol I drink the better off I am in the UTI department. Take a dose of EFAs everyday as well.
Good luck and keep us posted!!
I have cleared up a couple of UTIs at home, simply by drinking cranberry juice and LOTS of water. It's often dehydration that causes them, at least in my experience. Just be mindful of your temperature and get started with the fluids ASAP, because if you start to run a high fever with it, it's worth the trip to the doctor. I wound up in the emergency room when my first UTI turned into a kidney infection that would have been fatal had I waited even a couple more days.
Hi B.,
I am not sure what remedy there is besides anti-biotics. I do know that I was on anti-biotics for an ear infection, and a week after the final dose, I got bronchitis and still have sinus stuffiness. So I am wondering if the pharmaceutical companies are purposely exposing us to "other" aliments, just to keep us on medications! (Many people after taking the flu shot, actually got really ill...are we guinea pigs?
If you watch any of the commercials for medications, you will see that some of the "side effects from some of those medications can actually give people other illnesses.
I would go to one of the health food stores (Vitamin Cottage etc.) and ask them what they reccomend.
Hope you get better soon.
I think there's something you can do with drinking baking soda in water, but I don't know the details. Maybe you could google it, or email me back and I can give you the name of someone I know who did it. ____@____.com
hi B.,
Yes by drinking Cranberry juice daily you will prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder and urethral walls. You can also take herbal remedies to fight the infection and soothe and repair the bladder and urethral sensitive lining.
If you would like more information on which herbs are used for UTI's, feel free to call me at Holistic Pathways ###-###-####. Look in a book by Susun Weed or Rosemary Gladstar for their herbal suggestions. Some favorite herbs are Marshmallow and Uva Ursi.
Be well, L. Golub Clinical Herbalist
I don't know any remedies, but I do know that once you actually have the infection, cranberry juice does nothing to help heal it. It just makes it more painful to urinate, like pouring alcohol on an open sore. Sorry!
Blueberry juice can help those who don't respond as well to cranberry (no added sugars is best). Also, acupuncture & Chinese herbs (prescribed by a practitioner for your specific case) are great too.
There are some chinese herbs that can help. The acupuncturist that helped me with my UTI's just moved to Carbondale however... I would suggest getting reccommendations for a good acupuncturist in your area. The herbs will help address the deeper imbalance. Antibiotics are not the greatest solution as the UTI's usually come back. Good luck.
there is an herbal tea, Marshmallow, it works to alkalize your urinary tract. Stop eating acid forming foods for a week, drink lots of water and the tea and 'Just Cranberry" juice...that doesn't have sugar in it and you do not want to eat any sugar til it clears up. this worked for me...hope it helps.
Hi B.! I am a Personal Wellness Coach with Herbalife and we have an herbal supplement that is targeted specific for women to help with UTI. It's all natural ingredients (different types of berries). In fact, I know a lady who also does Herbalife and she had UTI. She had started taking this supplement and now her UTI is gone. Call me if you're interested in talking 888-236-4453 or email ____@____.com
Personally I recommend seeing a doctor for a UTI. They can damage your bladder and make you susceptible to more UTIs. The infection can also more to your kidneys and do permanent kidney damage (I have had a lot of experience with UTIs because of my daughter). However, if you want to try a home remedy first cranberry juice won't work; the stuff in the cranberries that helps is not concentrated enough in the juice to do you any good and it has too much sugar. You need to take a cranberry supplement like Azo to get any benefit from cranberries. The supplements work very well.
It sounds like you got your prescription over the phone w/o testing your urine. If that's the case, and the antibiotics don't clear it up within a couple days, be sure to consider yeast infection as a possibility, it sounds strange, but I seriously can't tell the difference between the two for me. Or you could have both. Hope you feel better soon.
I used to get UTI's frequently. Make sure you drink A LOT of WATER. I used to buy this over-the-counter medicine called AZO. You can find it at any store. It would work wonders for me. If the pain doesn't stop after taking this, I would definitely go to the Dr. Sometimes antibiotics are the only thing to get rid of it completely.
Try a silver solution. It is just purified water and silver. You would just drink some a few times a day. It work very good. A good brand is ASAP. Look in a health food store.
If you really don't want to go back to the doctor, you should at least call and ask if they can call a prescription in for you at your pharmacy. Cranberry juice is effective in preventing UTI's, by creating a barrier between the wall of the bladder and any bugs that get up there. If you don't treat this it can travel up the urinary tract and cause a kidney infection. Sometimes when the infection advances there is no longer any pain, and can lead you to believe it is gone. Untreated kidney infections can leat to kidney faiure and a lot more time a the doctor, and dialysis. best thing to do is call the Doc.
I was put on antibiotics indefinetly for a chronic UTI (low dose) but I found through young living oils a herbal supplement called K&B and it completly cleared up and I've not had problems for 5yrs it's a blend of juniper, parsley, dandelion, german chamomile, royal jelly etc....anyhow you can log onto younglivingessentialoils and order it..really really works...rc
Hi, There are many ways to clear up a UTI naturally, cranberry concentrate, not the juice with sugar helps. Uva Ursi is another herb that you can take in tincture form to help with this. Drinking apple cider vinegar can help. There is a chinese formula by Jade Dragon called urinary health. I would be more specific on what to take, but it is hard to say without knowing all of your symptoms. Just make sure it is just a UTI and does not go to a kidney infection.... if you start getting low back pain get it checked out.
In good health,

Just go to the doctors. i have my second UTI this month and you should be careful with things that you don't take on a regular basis. Many herbs can hurt you or make you worse if you don't know all the things it can do. Your antibiotics that you took earlier were not the same type for this problem so you need something different, and if you are at the doctors just ask them for the pill that helps with yeast infections. Don't mess around with that part of your body, I have tried some herbal remedies and they just put off the inevitable. You will still need to get checked out.
my midwife used to recommend uva-ursi, a tincture available at the health food store. It should only be used for a few days, but it does work! Not so good if you are still breastfeeding.
I went through a period where I was getting them occasionally. I would fill up my bladder with water or cranberry juice (like 32 oz.) and that seemed to flush it out pretty well.
Cranberry juice is helpful but making sure it is 100% pure juice, no sugar is crucial. Also supplementing with probiotics is very effective, esp if you recently went on antibiotics. I have found that 100 billion organisms to be a good dose during an infection. And if you have access to herbal tinctures- uva ursi, usnea, echinacea are all extrememly helpful. Those herbs in tea would be great too, not so much in capsules. Lots of water. Best wishes - know it is not fun, but you can get it without doc!
I would suggest you reconsider antibiotics, or at least go to your doctor and get his/her thoughts on the effectiveness of alternative treatments. I had UTIs through college and had to get my kidneys checked. If not completely treated UTIs can lead to serious kidney complications. I now drink cranberry juice daily and for several years was taking one antibiotic a day prophylactically. I was told that some women have "sticky" urinary tracts - the infenction sticks easily to the tract wall and is released by the prophylactic antibiotic.
Check this out from the Mayo Clinic:

Good luck!
Uva-ursi is an herb that was used a long time ago to treat UTI's. Also there is an herb suppliment called Cranactin and it works REALLY well. Good luck. I hate taking antibiotics because you usually get a yeast infection with them. One good antibiotic though is macrobid- works quickly and usually with few side effects.
