I Have to BAKE a CAKE- Need Some Ideas

With birthday parties being so expensive we have parties every other year instead of every year. Well this year my daughter has requested to go bowling with her family and she wants me to bake her a cake. Every year I buy my kids a cake from Sam's or local bakery. I can cook but I do not bake cakes, not to mention she wants the theme to be Hannah Montana.. Anyone know of an inexpensive cake decorating kit I can buy that is fairly easy to use. How do I get the icing to be smooth so I can decorate? Your help would be very much appreciated..

What can I do next?

Cakes are not hard. You can use a cake mix... but if you want to do it from scratch, don't worry.... just get the right flour and you'll be fine.

Better Homes has a great cake section this month. There a Valentine cupcake on the cover. They have 12 cake recipes in the magazine.

Frosting, you can buy it or you can make your own buttercream. It's not hard. To smooth any frosting, just keep a glass of warm water next to the cake while you frost, dip the knife or cake spatula in the water and smooth. Repeat. It's easy.

www.familyfun.com has lots of great cake ideas and party ideas. I think Hannah Montanna won't be on there, but something that goes with it... like maybe a record (cd) or microphone or just tons of glitter would be easy to do on a cake.

My idea is even easier! Buy a Hanna Montana doll or toy and sit her on nice cake. My godmother made me a Charlies Angel cake when I was little and when my kids wanted homemade cakes I made a good cake with yummy frosting colored to coordinate the toy. It's lots of fun!

Hi there, Candice. I'm an AVID baker, and every year I do a special cake for my son. Like when he turned 4, we did a Clifford theme, and I baked 2 sheet cakes, and cut them to look like bones, then stacked the, to make 1 big cake. I then iced it white - it was so cute! Anyway.... I freeze my cakes and then ice them while totally frozen. That way, the cake shouldn't crumble and get in your icing and make the icing look sloppy. If you don't have time to freeze the cake, then ice it once, then re-ice it. That should cover any crumbles in the first icing.
And as for ideas on the Hannah Montana theme, you could go on birthdayexpress.com. They have tons of Hannah Montana stuff. One idea for a cake would be to make a big micrpohone and music notes - like, make a pattern on paper and after baking a sheet cake (or 2), put the pattern on the cake and kinda trace around it then take the pattern off and cut the cake into the shape you traced. That's my suggestion. You could e-mail me to talk more if you'd like. My address is ____@____.com Hope the party is a success!!!

Make a guitar cake covered in purple or pink frosting and add a butterfly in a contrasting color and a few guitar details. Rolo candy make great nobs. Keep it simple. Use a paper templet to cut out the shape.

I'm no help with the Hannah Montana theme, but I can help with making the icing smooth.

First do a crumb coat - that's a thin icing layer to 'seal' the cake. Let that set, or refrigerate, then do the thick icing layer. Use crusting buttercream, just google for a recipe there are tons, not the pre-packaged kind because it's not sturdy enough. Wait till the icing crusts (you can push on it and it doesn't stick to your finger). Then lay a VIVA paper towel over the top and gently smooth the cake. Use VIVA because it has no pattern, any other type of paper towel will leave a funky pattern on the cake.

Sounds difficult, but it's really very easy and results in very smooth icing. I've tried wetting my knife while I ice and can't ever get it really smooth. My cakes always look perfect with the VIVA method.

Good luck!

YES...trace and cut it.
Make two sheet cakes... one for the base, and one for the microphone.
Ice the sides white, make the top icing a light purple or something, and make the microphone icing GRAY (see the Wilton section at Hobby Lobby or your local craft store, and even WalMart). Add sprinkled glitter to the top of the "mic" to make it look microphonish... and write "happy birthday to the best girl in ALL worlds"... or something hanna montana-ish
Sounds sooooooo fun

i love to bake cakes. buy the box mix for cakes and the already made icing. its so easy. to make the icing smooth buy a spatula and not the ones that are plastic that you use to scrape out teh rest of the bowl. it has a handle then a long metal piece that has a curve at the end adn you use it to smooth out the icing. i do like the guitar cake idea but i dont know where you could get a mold for that. probably order it online. i love www.wilton.com they have everything. even ideas for cakes adn stuff. you should check it out. also yo could just make a regular rectangle cake adn decorate it with hannah montana cake decorations. party city has cute stuff for hannah montana. cakes are soo much fun to do. i am about to make my sons cake for his 2nd bday. he loves teh movie cars so i will be doing his. but i would check out the website i gave you. they have cake products to buy and ideas. its really awesome. hope it helps you. oh and party city has cake boxes too to hold your cake.

I do no know where you live but there is a great place called The Cake Carousel in Richardson off of Central Expressway. You can rent pans there for $3 a day in the shape of many different figures, you may call and see if they have Hannah Montana. Also you take an image to a local bakery and they can print it on an edible sheet of "paper". Then all you have to do is lay in on top of the cake.

To make the icing smooth all you need to do is dip your knife in water, this will smooth out the icing as you put it on the cake. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions I will be happy to help! Good luck, I am sure you will have fun!

Here's what I suggest: Go to a party store (Party City, etc) and buy some Hannah Montanta party favor rings, bake some cupcakes, frost them and stick the rings in the middle of them. Its simple and you wont make a mess at the bowling alley...you won't even need plates!
