I bought my little girl a handmade toybox from itoyboxes.com for her first birthday. Usually, they have free shipping, which is great and they are SO well made and beautiful, I can see it handed down in the family for generations! They are expensive... but sometimes they have great sales!

I really love the "my first year" frames. I have one for my son and I have gotten them for first year gifts as well. You can get them lots of places, just do a search for them and see what kind and style you like. You can get the from 19.99 without a frame to $50 with a frame. Mine is the real basic one with 11 oval holes for pictures birth-11months and a big oval in the middle for the 1 year picture. I got a 11x14 frame at walmart for $8 and it looks great.
This will mostly be for mom of course. I think you could find lots of cool personalized stuff for the girls, but with the frames, I think you can just do whatever toys your children liked at age 1!
I bought my daughter an Italian charm bracelet. I got it on ebay for about 20 bucks for all the links. You can make it however you want, I sent pictures to get put on it as well as Baby's first bday, her dob age and weight, Bahamas flag since her daddys is from bahamas and some other special things from her first year.I wanted something that would last forever and that I could keep adding to every year.

If you go to Photobucket.com, you can upload pictures and make a hard bound book. If you don't have pictures of the girls to make the book yourself, there may be a way to buy a gift card so that the mom's can make their own book about the girls.
Keepsake box with hand and or foot prints made from clay would be a great idea! good luck I have one girl and she didnt like toys until she was 4 so I am just trying something here lol. Or a special quilt matching or just one with their names stitched in them ot it. Those would be something to cherish for life.

for my daugher's b-day I got her a trunk from michaels with my coupon(40% off) and I plan to decorate the trunk and as each birthday passes I want to put something for that year in her trunk and when she turns 18 I will give her the trunk as a birthday gift
