Good morning ladies!
Next Saturday I am having a potluck birthday dinner for myself(26!). I have invited 3 couples and hired babysitters so I can talk to grownups for a change! I am planning on playing the game 'Apples to Apples" but I need some more ideas for a large group-ice breaker would be great also. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My favorite ice-breaker game is 2 Truths & 1 Lie. It doesn't cost any money and there is no advance preparation. All you do is have each person, one by one, tell 3 things about themselves. It can be anything they want to share. 2 of those things must be truths and 1 lie. Everyone has to guess what the lie is. Good luck and Happy Birthday!

Hi! Apples to Apples is a pretty good game, kinda gets boring after a while. We are avid game players and Love, love, love Pop 5. You can't get it at the store, I've looked. I don't know if there's time, but I got mine off e bay for 20 bucks. It was worth it. We played it at a friends house and I had to have it. We play it when family gets together or friends. It's a really fun game and doesn't get boring. It's called Cranium's Pop 5. Have fun and Happy Birthday!!! Left right center is also really fun but everyone needs dollars for that game. But's it really fun too. My friend also loves Mad gab.

Buy the game Apples to Apples. So much fun! Make sure that you get the adult version. Recently played it with my grown cousins while visiting family for the holidays and we had so much fun. The best part is you don't have to fuss with a lot of reading rules and instructions to figure out how to play. Other than that we love playing Texas Hold'em-get some poker chips everyone puts in 20 dollars and play-so fun!
Have a great time!

We got "Would you Rather?", and it's hilarious! No right or wrong answers. You can keep score by guessing others' answers, but we don't bother. The box of questions sits on the table and we pull cards at supper. Example: Would you rather have a third eye in the middle of your forehead, or constantly break wind with a gut-wrenchingly foul odor? Stuff like that.

We have a ball playing Mr. Pictionary. You will bust up laughing they way people try to draw. A can get it at Target or Walmart. this is a couples game and as many as you want can play. We just pass up to bonus rounds and who ever reaches ten correct answers is the winning team. Also Jenga is a good game too as well as just old fashion card games. Have fun. We do this twice a month, something we do food, and sometimes just apps. And it's bring your own booze. Our friends are always calling and saying when is game night.

Sorry if this is a duplicate... I didnt have time to read all of the other answers. We played Taboo on New Years eve with 3-4 other couples and had a lot of fun, someone had the electronic version and it was pretty cool (you have to describe a word on the screen without using the 6 most common words to describe that thing), it gets pretty creative and exciting. I like old school board games too (pictionary, scrabble etc.). Happy Birthday, hope you have a great one.

Cranium or Cranium Cadoo, or whatever it's called. I just went to an adult party recently where we played that and we had a blast.

We love Apples to Apples, Boxers or Briefs and Taboo. Here's another idea, though, that won't cost any money but is a lot of fun:

Everybody gets a sheet of paper and a pencil. Tell everyone to think up a common phrase, like "out of the frying pan and into the fire," and to write that phrase at the top of their paper. Once they've written it down, they fold the top of the paper over, so none of their writing shows. Then they pass the paper to the person on their right. Unfold the paper enough to see what their neighbor wrote. Fold it back and then draw something to represent that phrase. Fold the paper so their drawing is covered and pass it to the person on their right. Unfold to see the drawing only and write a phrase that fits the picture. Repeat until someone runs out of room on their paper, or until the pages make a complete circuit.

One other party game we've played involved the use of two (NEW!) toilet plungers and two rolls of toilet paper. Even teams (we did boys against the girls, but whatever), in a line. One person from each team stands at the other side of the room (or yard), holding a roll of TP between their knees. The first person in line from their side places a plunger between *their* knees and walks (waddles, lol) to the person holding the TP. Then gets the TP onto the plunger... no hands can be used for anything other than placing the TP and plunger between knees. I wasn't too sure how this one would go over since it was a mixed crowd (read: my son's girlfriend and her family), but it was a blast.

Happy birthday!

This isn't really an icebreaker but a great group game. It is called Left Right Center. You can get it at Target for like $5. It is simply rolling 3 dice and passing the dice around the table taking turns rolling. You are passing dollar bills around the table and putting them to the left, right, or center based on your dice roll. The person at the end of the game with money in front of them wins the whole pot in the middle. Fun gambling, people can socialize while game is going on, can get rowdy etc... Just tell guests bring $10-20 in singles.

You could also write down famous people or things and instead of everyone wearing a nametag, you write this on the nametag and stick it on their back. They have to go around the room asking "yes" or "No" questions until they guess what they are. This is a good ice breaker for sure.

You can play "two truths and a lie" or "two lies and one truth".
Everyone has a small piece of paper and something to write with and has to write things about themselves. They read it and people around the room have to guess which one is the lie or the truth-depending on what version you play.
Pictionary is still awesome and as long as you have white board or chalk board, you could play this-just come up w/some things to draw pictures of. I recently played this at a Christmas party and we were all laughing so hard-we had to draw Christmas movies or songs. So, you could have a theme or do words at random and write on piece of paper and go for it.

Another one that is funny is you blind fold people, have a long string and put donuts on the sting and stand the people w/blindfolds in front of the donut. Two people hold the string at both ends and then the start moving the string while the other people are trying to eat the donut.

Have a wonderful time and Happy Birthday!

Catch phrase is also very fun. Especially if you know someone with an older electronic one...they have questions on pop culture from 20 years ago as opposed to current pop culture. We do Roqulette or fondue or focaccia pizza (where everyone tops their own and then puts it on a pie plate to bake) for dinner with adults as those all take time and induce lots of sitting, talking and eating time. pictionary is old but fun, also cranium is a blast with a group (we usually do boys against girls) and we've sensored ours a bit. On the claymation side they give suggestions to mold of clay different words and we've taken out "cheeks" or on the acting taken out Madonna's "like a virgin"...just to keep it all fun and not totally inappropriate.
Have fun! and Happy Birthday!

Apples to Apples is fun. Mad Gab is my favorite. When you read the instructions, it sounds kind of cheesy, but play it and you'll see. My husband and I get together with two other couples for "game nights" frequently and Mad Gab is the first game we play. Have a ball!

Hi K.,

Here are a couple of ideas for your birthday dinner party:

Tape the name of a famous person on everyone's back. As people socialize, they can ask for clues about their famous person. The first person to guess the name on his or her back wins a prize.

If you have a Trivial Pursuit game, put out the cards where guests will see them. Guests automatically read the questions to one another, thus beginning conversations.

Ask each guest to bring a baby picture of themselves. Post them on a board and see which guest correctly matches the most amount of baby pictures to adults.

Happy birthday, K., and have a wonderful day, party, and year ahead!

Best wishes,
L.

assuming beer pong is out!!...just kidding!!

check out Barnes & Nobles website, they have excellent game selections. Amazon, too.

A good icebreaker is compiling a list of ?s...ranging from "who can touch their tongue to their nose".....to "the farthest you've traveled"....."have you been to _______"....."how many siblings do you have"......"your fav dessert"....etc. Change up the questions based on the group you've gathered. You can go the newlywed route, the sedate route, the rowdy & raunchy route......lots of choices & options! & I guarantee you will have an absolute BLAST, not only creating the list....but also doing it at the party!

Oh, & by the way, a fav party activity right now (for all ages) is to buy the jelly beans called "Bean Boozled". There are several in each color & can be a variety of flavor....that's where you get "bean boozled"....meaning that the brown could be ?chocolate or ?dog food!!! OMGosh, we've done this with all ages & it's a RIOT!!! Have the camera ready!

we play a game when we have a bunch of people over. give everyone a sheet of paper and a pencil. on the first line you will already have written the start to a story. ex.... There once was a girl who..... each person writes for a minute then you fold the paper under so you can't see the whole thing only the last line they wrote. you pass the paper to the next person do the same thing over and over till all people have written on the sheet. then you read the stories outloud you will get some very funny ones. people will be laughing and having fun. good luck

I was at a party where we played "Who am I?"

The hostess secretly wrote names of famous people on small pieces of paper (it could be anyone famous - actor, singer, author, president, athlete). The paper was then taped to our backs and we walked around the party asking people questions about who we were..."Am I a man or woman?" - "Am I still alive?" - "Did I commit a crime?", etc...

You can ask only 5 questions per person, but you can talk to as many people at the party as you'd like (ie: you ask Bob 5 questions about who you are & if you don't have the answer yet, you can move onto Sue, etc....) The answers given have to be short, like "yes" or "no" , "alive" or "dead", etc....

This was a great ice breaker, especially for those guests who didn't know each other AND it makes it especially funny if the person is a "colorful" character like Mike Tyson, Little Richard, or Amy Winehouse :-)

Taboo is a lot of fun as well! One icebreaker that really worked well for us is you have everyone write down a little known fact about them and go around the room and try to guess who it is.. it's incredible some of the things people have done! It was a great icebreaker and had everyone laughing and interacting by the end of it.
