I Need Information on Speech Classes Through School District

My daughter, age 3 years 3 months is in need of some speech therapy. She is at or above level for speech but it isn't very articulate. She misses certain sounds and uses her tongue when not necessary. Her preschool teacher recommended it and it was something we had already discussed with her peditrician at her 3 year check up. We would like to take advantage of the free therapy through the Oceanside Unified School District but don't know where to begin.

Can any help by giving us some guidance?

Thank you!

Hi S.~

We are currently receiving services through San Marcos school district. Every parent has a right to have their child evaluated by the school district. There is an excellent book called "The Complete IEP Guide" by Seigel. It has forms of how to request, in writing (everything must be in writing), the eval, how many days the school district has to repsond to you by law, the process of the eval and what comes after, etc. It was a life saver to ensure my daughter got the services she needed.

S.,

My son needs vision therapy, so I have been doing some research on the best way to get the therapy through the Vista school system. He is in third grade, so I'm not sure if the same procedure applies for pre-schoolers. But I found out that you need to send a letter requesting that your child be evaluated for an Individual Education Plan (IEP). You can find a sample letter, plus tons of other information, at pai-ca.org. The web site can be overwhelming, but you need to find the publication called "SERR." You go into Forms and Publications and then select number 3. It will take you to the SERR. Good luck, K.

We are doing speech through California First 5 and the speech therapist is awesome! It is free and done at the Rady Children's facility near Tri City Hospital. check out www.howkidsdevelop.com and click on the C3 section for more information. You will not be disappointed!

The school in oceanside that my son had his evaluation at was mission elementary. I would call the school district and find out what school is closer to you and call the school itself. It is a great process.

I have also done evaluations at rady children's hospital here in oceanside and it is great as well. so those are to great options.
In response to kims message It is a little different for preschoolers. I just called and said that I needed an evaluation.
Has your daughter had other evaluiations? I would call and find out the school that offers the speech closest to you and then I would call the school itself and ask to speak to the preschool speech thereapist. The thereapist will have all kinds of info for you. and will also help set up an evaluation.
