I have 2 children *3 & 4* that I breastfed but only for a very short period of time. I am now expecting in about 6 weeks and I am determined to nurse MUCH longer. I am sure with my 2 older children having busy schedules I will need to pump on occasion. I have looked @ some pumps but have NO clue where to even begin. On top of that, money is very tight for us right now due to some unexpected life changes and I dont have $300.00 to spend on one right now. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

I have an Ameda Purely yours that I like. Its a double electric. I also have a Medela hand pump that was good for occasional pumping too.

As far as the $$$ goes...talk to your insurance. Some of them will pay for all or part of a breastpump. Or you can look into renting one from the hospital - sometimes that actually works out cheaper. But whatever you do resist the temptation to buy a used pump. Its really not safe.

i have a 5 mo old. i use the lansinoh dbl electric pump. it was about $130. you can catch sales for it too. i work fulltime so i pump daily. it's good! there's no need to spend $300-400 & renting will prove to be expensive if you want to nurse for an extended period of time!!

There's no need to spend $300 to purchase a good electric breast pump. Walmart has a very nice one that pumps both breasts at once for time efficiency, is lightweight, easy to clean, and easy to use.

I have a Medela single deluxe breast pump that you can have for free.
Check out the below web page for info. on it.

I only used it about 15 times and had to upgrade to a dual pump to take to work. I'm pretty sure I have all the parts and could mail it to you or meet you to deliver. I'm new to mama source and don't know the area this expands to.
Where do you live? Contact me if interested. I'd be glad for you to have it.
It can be a little more time consuming using this style since you can only pump one side at the time but maybe it would come in handy while nursing on the other side??

I recommend you go to Babies R Us and look at the different styles. When you see one you like - go to Craigs List and buy a used one. Sterilize all the parts and pieces - it will be fine. You can also buy replacement parts from the manufacturer. You shouldn't have to spend more then $125-150.

M.,

Ask your doctor or the hospital about renting a breast pump. I have had several friends do this for very cheap. The pumps are very good quality. I hope this helps.

Hey M.,
Check with your local charity organizations, sometimes they get them donated and set them aside to lend out to anyone who may need a helping hand for whatever reason. CCA (Christian Community in Action)of Cary is a good one to check out. They have an office out of the "Dorcas" shop on Maynard road right off of Chatham street in Cary. There are also organizations and Hospitals that accept donations of breastmilk to help feed preemies and for other reasons. They have guidlines/rules that you have to meet in order to donate in case you might want to help them out.
Good Luck and Congratulations!
K.
