I'm active duty in the navy, and I take classes online. Its easier 2 me cause I can get 2 them after my son falls asleep or just takes a nap. I tried the classroom but it took a lot out of me
I was wondering if any other mom does college classes online. I would like to take some college classes online in the education field. What do you all think?
I am weighing all my options. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I am going to homeschool my kids in pre-k this year so I think I may do that and then see what is going on around us before I make any decision about going back to school. I really appreciate you all again, Thank you!

I go to Regent University Full time online and its tons of work, maybe three or more research papers and tons of quizzes a week but very rewarding none the less. I haven't been in school in a while so I thought I was crazy attempting this with a 2 and 4 year old at home but luckily with my hubby he helps me get through juggling it all when he is not working. Majority of my classmates are moms so that was the most rewarding thing of all that many of us are doing and need that added support because some moms I know think I am crazy, but want to set that great example of an entire education for my daughters. Good luck.
It's always admirable to go to school and further your education. Consider the cost, the ages of your children, your other commitments, your time with your husband, and management of your home, and then ask yourself if there is enough time left to take on college studies. If your children are teens or tweens and can manage their chores with minimal supervision, and Dad is sensitive enough to realize that you will have papers and tests to prepare for class and will take on laundry and meals, go for it. If you have in-laws or parents nearby who can babysit for free--go for it! If you have no help, young children, an absent husband--you might want to wait a bit. Online courses require more time than on-campus, I've heard.
Not sure where yu are living but PG Community Collee has online classes, University of MD as well but goig for education you r goingto eventaly have to get into the classroom Hope this helps
Got my Master's at UMUC a few years ago. Great school, and loved the online format. However, consider counting the cost to your family. How will you going back affect your home life? Will you be able to get your studies done after the children and hubby go to bed or in the morning before they get up, and if you are working, will you be able to sneak in some study time during your breaks?
I wish you well, and hope you are able to achieve your goals. Just because we are married and have children doesn't mean that life stops for us and that they are our end all.
I think that you should have fun! Take classes that interest you, or will benefit you and your family in some way. I don't know of any colleges that don't have online courses. While going thru my divorce, after having my third child, I went back to college thru grants- you don't have to pay them back.
Enjoy
I was at UMUC online and now am at TESC (thomas edison state college, nj) online... I will be getting my BA in March/2010. Go for it...but you have to be self-disciplined!! I really like it. oh and let me add that a major difference between the afore mentioned schools is that there is no "late" at TESC, unlike UMUC, you have the whole semester to get your work in!! To us parents, that is a wonderful relief. At UMUC if something is due by midnight and you submit at midnight and 30 seconds.. ITS LATE and points are deducted.
Hi D.,
I just finished my Elementary Reading & Literacy masters online in 20 months @ Walden University, (www.waldenu.edu) You take one class every 8 weeks, so you only need to concentrate on that class. After the first 2 classes you can request to double up. They have graduate and undergraduate programs.
Good luck!!
I take online classes from NVCC. It takes more time on my part because I can't just attend lecture and blow off the text, but it works for me as the schedule is flexible to work around work and family.
Realize that they take all the time of attending a class lecture and reading and preparing.
My husband is finishing his degree online right now through AMU (American Military University). Once he's done, then it's my turn. We both had a good deal of work already done through military credits and classes we'd taken through the years through military Tuition Assistance, but it's still a lot of work and very time consuming. You have to be very self-disciplined to make online college work all of the way to your degree. If you feel like it's something you can do at home then go for it. You're going to need some help with the kids, but you could probably get a lot of it done at night after everyone else is asleep. That's when I get most of my work done around the house. :)
I don't take classes, but my husband just started UMUC. It seems like it is a pretty credible, respected, and well designed program. I have a graduate degree which I finished during my first pregnancy. It would have been hard with little kids, like under 18 months or so. But I oculd totally see doing a class or two with older kids. I think it's great you want to do this, and what a good example to your kids. Maybe start slow, but go for it!!
Hello D., I work fulltime, a mother and a grandmother and yes I went back to school and did it on line. I received my Associate Degree, now working on my BA, Online classes are wonderful because you can do it at home, but you must, i repeat you must stay on top of your assignments. When assignments are due at 12:00am, they mean 12:00am not 12:01am. You can do it, and you also meet people from your class. Please keep me posted and Good luck. Oh I also wanted to let you know that I am attending UMUC and they are great. I started when my kids were small, and it was a little hard, but nothing comes easy and it was worth it. I feel that if you have a partner and you want to do something, that partner can pitch in and help with housework and the kids, also they will be pulling for you and the next thing you know, they might want to take a few classes.
I am currently going to school online to get my masters in psychology. My husband is also taking online courses for his BA in medical administration. I just recently started these classes, however so far I am loving it. It is great cause you can pick and choose when you want to go to class and you don't have to sit through the lectures. If you need any info just let me know and I might be able to point you in some directions. Good luck!
my husband is taking classes at university of maryland university college online. you can try them.
Do it!!! I take classes with UMUC, all online. I'm a psych major. Check out their website:
http://www.umuc.edu/index.shtml
Right on their main page is a list of majors, one of which is 'teacher education'.
I have been taking classes since just before baby Miles was born; I take about 3 classes per semester and summer classes which works pretty well. They even give you a tutorial class on how to navigate the online library.
Online classes are the best! You can do it!

I am in my last semester to get my associates. I have done my entire schooling online through Tidewater Community College. I have a four year old daughter and a three week old son, so it can be done. The hardest part is finding things to keep my daughter entertained whild I am doing school work. But going online has allowed me to save money on day care, as well as be around for my kids. I wouldn't have done it any different. Good luck if you decide to do it!
That is a wonderful idea! I also attend classes; some face to face, but mostly online. I attend Univiversity of Maryland University College (UMUC) and they are absolutely wonderful!! They actually received the highest rating among all other online schools among military students that attend online classes around the world. For more information go to www.umuc.edu. They have a large variety of majors and programs that can all be done online.
I took classes online until I got really sick during my pregnancy with my daughter. I'll be starting them again next year when my son is in school. I think it's great! I love the flexibility, and there's more reading and researching than I had in classes that I went to, but fewer lectures, and the time that it takes to drive to class and find a parking spot, and then walk to the buildings...it's so much easier for me as a mom to do online classes. I've really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to getting back to it.
I took all my bachelor's and master's courses online through UMUC. I loved it! My cousin is a teacher and is using UMUC for her continuing education. Make sure you check out the college you are using. Some online colleges are not actually accreditated colleges.
I love UMUC (University of Maryland University College). Good Luck!
That is an excellence idea try Cheaspeake College. They have several classes that you can do online. Some of them you can do at your own pace.
D.,
I went to ODU for my Master's Degree in Education. They have classes through Teletechnet...some are online, some are video streamed, and some are site based. Everything is broadcast from the beach area, but you attend classes through various sites they have. I did mostly video streaming and site based classes. It worked very well for me. They have a varity of different majors. Any way you can, if you want to go to school then do it. Good Luck!!

Your local community college is probably your best bet for heading back to school and finding a good number of classes online. There are fully online universities, like Strayer, but they don't really have that good of a reputation yet.
I'm going back to school at CCBC (Community College of Baltimore County), and transferring to a university for my BA, then MA, but none of the state or private universities around here offer many online classes, except maybe for an IT degree. Good luck, and good for you!
D.,
I was a student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) for 3 years and I took several of my classes online. I LOVE Nova! I found the class selection great, the teachers fantastic AND I found my classes to be both challenging and fun. There where a few duds, but thats anywhere you go. The online classes are great now because you can even participate in class discussions through the internet. You do need a certain amount of time and self discipline -I found it easiest for me to schedule homework/study time as well as class time. I still need several classes to earn my teaching degree and I am considering completing them online while I raise my babies. I am planning to take only a class or two a semester because my goal is to reach my degree by the time my youngest is in kindergarten. I also think it is most important for me to be focusing on my family at this time, so I will take it slow. I will check out the online program at Nova and pass along some information for you, if you would like. Let me know and good luck!
