Well, I've been a 9-to-5er now for a long time. I've been fortunate that my mother has been my (*cheap & wonderful*) nanny for 2.5 years, but she needs to go back to school and I just can't put the angels in Kindercare, you know?
So, I'd like to take on a couple kids. Nothing big. I believe in organic, outdoors, the zoo, turning the couch into a jungle, etc. My SW home is being remodeled for another 2-3 months, so while we're in an apartment, I've got some time to think about how I want to swing this.
What I need to know from YOU is, what do YOU want to see in home daycare? I see a lot of you are concerned about background checks and licensing - but when reading the state requirements - it's only $50 to get licensed. I can see how the checks and balances would work out IF someone were horrible and got caught at being horrible - but....I don't know. I really love the Green checklist for daycares online - and I love the idea that some high-end daycares have of keeping logs of daily activities.
Tell me - shoot me a line, what should I do? I'd like to take on another family's children in the way that there is a mutual trust and respect.
For example, references? Huh? The only reference I have would be that my ex-husband's wife (ER Nurse) trusts me with their children (I think that's very telling :)).
Thanks all, and sorry for the babbling!
PS, I'd like to update this. I found: http://www.ccrr-mc.org/trainings.html I'm super excited about my overview class next week and I've already printed out my food handlers card booklet. who knew making a major "career" shift such as this would be so exciting. woohoo!
I was a child care provider for 15 years, in center and in home for the last few years. I "taught" all ages from infants to after-school ages. My favorite age, if I had to pick one would be 3's preschool. I LOVED teaching preschool. When I started my home care my goal was to provide affordable care for families with more than one child... Do you know how expensive that can be? I have TONS of ideas and activities that I implemented that I could share with you.
Drop me an email if you'd like some one-on-one "training" CHATTING! ____@____.com Do you know what ages you are looking for, meaning more of after-school age or more pre-school age. Your own children's ages factor into your allowable count, which you'll learn in your overview class. Have fun at that and ask LOTS of questions... that's what they're there for.

Hi there B.,
I just joined mamasource and posted a request for suggestions for daycare in SW. I would love to find an in-home daycare that felt right because it would be so much better knowing that my little boy was in a place where he is known, cared-for and understood as an individual. The daycare center kind of places might be safer in terms of accountability, but it just seems kind of impersonal. My wish is to find a place for my son where his growth and development are celebrated almost as much as if I were the one caring for him. I also wish for enrichment opportunities. If I were home with him we would be baking cookies and going to the park and the library and the play time at SW Community Center etc. etc. etc. I would love to find care for him that would provide those kind of experiences too.
Those are some of the things I would be looking for in an in-home daycare. I also Googled a ton of questions to ask of potential daycare providers. Looking at some of those might help you know more about what people are looking for.
Oh—my husband also just mentioned CPR/First Aid certified.
Good luck!
M.
