Does it have to be ice skating related? i went to a kids skating party and it was 80's themed.
Pick something he likes or that is on sale.
Having a skating party for our 6 year old boy. I need ideas for favors and decor. He isn't into hockey and frozen while an obvious choice seems too girly. He doesn't have any set ideas.
Thanks in advance
I decided to get a penguin piñata, penguin figurines for the cupcake toppers and nat geo magazines re penguins for favors. Plates and paper goods will be whichever colors he chooses. Thanks for all your input.

In my experience, no one cares about themes except adults and party stores. Follow your kid - he doesn't care, so why should you?
Just skate, eat cake, and go home! If you insist on party favors, give anything you want - it doesn't have to be skating related. These are not NFL rookies - just 6 year olds. Buy 2 mylar balloons with skates on them, and be done with it! You can use clear plastic goody bags and buy a few skate-type stickers to stick on them. Put anything at all in there - candy, movie ticket, coupon for the skating rink, pencil with skates on it, anything.
Try to stay away from labels like "girly" - I know it's kind of forced on you, but don't go there. It limits kids from experiencing and enjoying things because of gender roles.
Boys don't care about birthday parties having things like themes or decorations. (I doubt girls do either.) As long as his friends are there and they are having fun...Have a plain white frosted cake and put a toy Zamboni on it to look like a skating rink. Plain coloured plates and napkins. How about packets of hot chocolate mix and hand warmers as favours? Or free admission tickets to the skating rink? Or just a candy bar?
We just had a birthday party for our son. The party favors included those stretchy bugs and spiders and a couple of little candy bars. Very little effort on my part. I bought cupcakes and brownies (put the candles in the brownies) from the grocery store bakery, which worked out great! I walked around and asked each boy if they wanted a chocolate cupcake, vanilla cupcake or brownie. So much easier than cutting pieces of cake! And the boys didn't care at all!
I've done themes before. I think the kids might like a theme, but I also think they won't notice if you decide not to do a theme. So I choose easy :-)
My son is turning 7 and having an ice skating party too! He also is not that into hockey or Frozen, just thought it would be a fun party!
I'm not really doing decor, mostly because I'm not that great at it, and also because the ice skating rink is supplying all the paper goods so I'm just going with that. I might get some cold colored balloons.
For favors I bought the stretchy gloves from Target.com. They don't have a ton in the store yet (his party is this weekend) so if you can wait awhile I'm sure they will. Dollar Tree also sells stretch gloves for a dollar but they also weren't out yet.
The Target ones were about $1.33/pair and they are cute, varied colors with stripes on them. They come in packs of 3 which is kind of annoying but whatever. I got a few packs and will let the kids pick their gloves to wear while skating then take home. Then in their take home bag we are putting a pouch of hot cocoa and a bag of microwave popcorn. I was going to do individual bags of Skinny Pop but my son wanted the microwave kind because he thinks it's so cool! LOL, we never make it that way, so it's novel I guess.
That's it. I might throw in a bag of fun size M&Ms but we're keeping it easy and useful and not giving out any junk that will just be thrown away.
Favors are always given out around here - and my kids have gone to hockey parties. I know yours won't be hockey, skating only, but here's some ideas from our experience -
- mug with hot chocolate pack in it. They gave these out as end of year hockey gifts to the players, so they had their numbers on it. I suppose you could do names (?) but that's likely pricey - so I'd just stick to mug
- Gatorade was given out - not sure your child and friends would like that - in hockey they often drink it. But it was given with a nice big water bottle. The water bottle is still in use at our house.
- Cookies done up to look like skates (in our case it was jerseys) - kids enjoyed those
- chocolate bars - probably the most appreciated item. I find kids like the sweet stuff mostly.
There are little hand warmer things you can get (little packets) - we give those to kids who come to our outdoor rink and they are always appreciated in their mitts.
Sounds fun. My kids love them. We always do hot choc here when kids come use our rink - they always want it so I like that idea. Then send them home with the mug.
Decor .. I don't think that needs to be tied into skating personally. Usually they just have balloons and cake. I've been doing cupcakes lately - find that easier and if kids don't eat it all, they just chuck it in garbage (no plates and forks).
Why do you need to give presents to the kids that come to your party? I think giving favors at a party is sad and a waste of money. No one keeps them and the kids don't even remember them.
Google holiday popcorn snowman! Cute craft or party gift!
The only theme you need is 'birthday party'. :-) Keep it simple and don't worry about linking it to ice skating.
Are you familiar with a movie called "Year Without a Santa Claus" - do a SnowMeister/HeatMeister theme? Or isn't there probably some superhero / comic book guy who uses ice and snow as weapons?
Can serve snow-cones, cocoa, flavored ice cubes in fun shapes (buy a mold), etc.
Skip the favors. Most of the time it's just small junk that gets tossed out anyway. Or it's a bag full of candy most parents don't want their kids to eat. Favors aren't essential.
And there's no rule you need to have a theme. Decorate with his favorite colors. He can even have a basic cake that says Happy Birthday on it. Our son is 13 now and doesn't do a theme. No one cares. They're just excited about eating cake. If you must do a theme, think about what he enjoys most and run with that. It doesn't have to tie into ice skating.
We had a skating party and the theme was just skating, the cupcakes and pizza were in the party room so the kids could eat when they felt like taking a break from the ice.
well, what IS he into?
at 6 my boys had huge, huge fad preferences.

My 7 year old daughter is having an ice skating party soon! So I have been thinking about this. Amazon has ice skate zipper pulls where you can buy a bundle of them. I was also thinking those stretchy gloves. We picked blue tablecloths with silver/white plates and napkins. Target happened to have silver napkins with snowflakes on them. I love the mug and hot cocoa idea. This is my daughter's first big birthday party...we have never done one for her before. She usually has a low key birthday with a few friends. She is very excited about it.
I, too, would just go with festive bright colors (a bunch of balloons, colorful paper plates) and a Happy Birthday banner. Since this isn't Frozen or hockey themed, just keep it colorful and generalized birthday stuff. For favors, how about one kid's movie ticket (not to any particular movie) in a shiny cellophane bag (resembles ice, available at dollar stores or where cake decorating supplies are sold), tied with a bright ribbon? A kid's movie ticket isn't very expensive and parents would probably appreciate that more than a bag of gloppy junk and plastic stuff.
