Icepick Headache?

Moms,

On top of all the issues in my life right now I also have a health problem that it scares me so much! I have been getting these sharp intermittend pains (they last 2-3 sec) on top of my head for like a year. They are in the same exact spot and that spot is tender to touch when these pains occur. They started during a very bad cold when I caughed a lot- maybe there is some pinched nerve?
I found another triggers: before my period, after a dooth extraction, stress...
I went to different neurologists but they couldn't tell for sure what this is. One of them said they are probably icepick headaches, another send me to get a MRI. Well, the problem with the MRI is that is expensive and I am claustrophobic.
I will eventually go get a MRI, but until then, I would like to know if some of you ever got this kind of pain and if you of any cure. It will really ease my anxiety related to it...thank you all!

What can I do next?

From what I've read - ice pick headaches are headaches you get when there doesn't seem to be any other underlying cause.
If that's what you have then no worries about tumors or anything like that.
Maybe you can get an open MRI - I've heard that they are not so bad.

Get the MRI. They show the best!
I've had them. Some tips to help w/the claustrophobia.
The time you spend in there goes by quicker than you think.
If you tell them you may be claustrophobic, they will give you a handheld
device to push for them to immediately slide you out. I can almost
guarantee you won't need it. :)
Close your eyes the minute they have you lie down on the table. It helps
so much!!! Don't open them up even to sneak a peek. :)
Ask for the ear plugs or bring your own so you can tune out some of the
noise.
Put yourself in your "happy place" while you're in there.
I promise you it will go by fairly quickly.
Go get the MRI done now so you can get to the source of this pain as quickly as possible!!! Good luck & try to relax. You will be fine! :)

If you are afraid of the MRI, then I would go see an acupuncturist. A lot of the body systems have referral places in the head. I think they might be able to give you some information that the neurologist might be able to find. I don't know what is in your area, but here we have a place called Working Class Acupuncture which is a co-op that makes it more affordable since most insurances won't cover it.

Good luck! I get those too, but the behind the eye kind, and boy do I feel for you.

No I do not. Just wanted to mention the "Open MRIs" they have now.
Hopefully, that's an option and it will help with the claustrophobia/anxiety.
Get the MRI.
Good luck!

I get something similar but mine happen right behind my eye and really feels like a hot poker is stabbed into my eye if I stand up. The pain only lasts a few seconds but mine will last off and on about 2 days. I've only had this happen 3 times and I know what has triggered each occurance. Being a total anxiety person myself I bet the only thing that will ease your nerves fully is to get the MRI. I can tell you all about mine and trust me when they happen I freak out and my anxiety raises a lot. Stress isn't helping anything either.

Hello
Although the doctors have yet to say what exactly causes the headaches, my husband has been getting them for years... Some think they are related to the migrane headaches... My husband just tries to grin and bare the pain.. as medicine doesn't do too much.. he did have an MRI and they didn't find anything.. however, IF you to relieve your anxiety and do decide upon an MRI.. definitely shop around AWAY from hospitals, which charge the most.. we didn't have insurance for awhile and found that there are facilities away from the hospital setting that are just as professional and safe, and who specialize in MRIs and CATSCANS.. also, unlike the hospital, those places will negotiate, particularly if you are playing cash.. e,g,.. my husband had to get a catscan, at the hospital, they wanted 1,000s... at a place we found, 500 dollars... and results within one day, AND.. we also got a copy...
so DO check around..
as for the headache right before your period... I get those too, although not an ice pike, they nonetheless can be annoying... it's from the drop in Progesterone right before your period.. often, Perimenopausal women, such as myself experience the headaches frequently...

what you decide to do, I wish you the best

When I get horrible headaches, eating a meal eases the pain.
