We live in Florida and our children have never experienced snow. Can anyone suggest somewhere to go where we can have some fun in the snow at a reasonable cost. Does not have to be a skiing vacation as this is too pricey. (unless someone knows of a really good deal). We are wanting to go for a week after Christmas.
Any suggestions?
COLORADO. It is snowing now and isn't supposed to stop for a couple of days. We have a great Hot Spring Pool in Glenwood Springs, snow resort there and some larger ones up valley. There is a ton to do and see. The mountains are beautiful right now. Suggestion. IF you go to Glenwood, try to fly to Grand Junction or Eagle if affordable. It is an easier drive than coming from Denver.
We are looking too, but have to visit relatives in Texas for Christmas so we would be driving from Texas. We don't ski, but I heard the ski resorts have snow machines and that is the only guarantee of snow.
If you've Never been up to New England - Its a Wonderful place to visit - LOTS of snow !! LOL New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont.......not sure how far you wanted to travel. GL and I hope the kiddies ENJOY the Snow !!!!
North Carolina is ALWAYS fun as far as I am concerned! Usually has some good snow, the mountains are beautiful, and it is not such a long drive. Boone and Blowing Rock are magnificent .. check the hotels to see if they have holiday package deals.

I have to agree with CO as it's not as COLD as the NE or midwest in the winter. If you want to "avoid" the ski resorts, but still see a great plac ein co, try Co Springs. Another great place is Park City, UT. 35 minutes from Salt Lake. Salt lake itself is a neat place to visit as well - lots of family friendly activities and beautiful mountains all around.
Not sure where the snow is this year. I live in Alaska, and we should be buried in it, but have barely an inch on the ground, and are simply covered in ice from 3 days of freezing rains!
I lived in Co for 12 years and agree it is beautiful there. The snow is fabulous, in the mountains. As for staying in Denver or in the cities, it can snow a lot there and then melt within a day or two. If you go to Colorado, plan on staying in the mountains, which can be a little pricey. Any of the ski resorts are great.
I currently live in MN, and can guarantee snow on the ground from now until March. It is snowing right now in fact, it is just colder than cold. There are beautiful places to visit up north around Lake Superior/ Duluth. Ludsen is a great place also, including skiing and other winter activities. If you just wanted to sight see, the Mall of America is always a great attraction. If you do decide to do MN let me know and I can give you other kid friendly activities in the Twin Cities area.
Upstate New York! Check out Jet Blue for reasonable airfare. Fly into Newburgh and you are within an hour of NYC, the Catskills, and the Adirondack Mountains. Beautiful wineries, lots of Culinary Institute restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts who often offer reduced rates in the winter if they are not within 10 minutes of a ski slope!
don't go to colorado springs. it will snow one day and be gone the next - it does not last due to the sun - i.e. melts quickly. I know, I lived there for 3 years. I think the longest snow ever lasted was 3 days and that was when it was VERY cold. Also, going from Florida to Colorado you will more than likely have severe altitude sickness - difficult breathing, headaches, super tired, etc.
I recommend some place like Chicago (big town) or Ann Arbor, MI (or smaller college town but still lots of good places to explore). You can enjoy the snow or hang out and sip coffee, tea, etc AND if for some reason there isn't snow there are plenty of other things to do in both these places. Ann Arbor will be a bit quiet during Christmas due to students being gone and for that matter not as many events BUT there are lots of people who live there all the time so fun can be had. As for Chicago, the Art Institute, the Magnificent Mile, Science and Industry, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planitarium will all be decked out for the holidays. Hope this helps.
