Hello!

My pastor's daughter just got engaged and is getting married in 4 weeks! The reason for the rush? Not what you're thinking right now : ) He is being deployed to Iraq for one year while she will finish her last year of college. Both great great kids! They are both Pastor's children, both have been a huge part of the mission field, both homeschooled all their lives, same age, definitely made for each other. My question is.....since they aren't setting up a home right away, we decided to give them a shower encouraging folks to give money. I've heard of money trees but is there any other good ideas we could set up at the shower to put money on that would look cute/original??? Thanks in advance!

You need to write it on the invitations, otherwise, people will spend money on gifts and then when they get to the shower, they will be expected to give money as well.

So word it short and sweet, something like:

"Because they will not have a place to set up their home for a while due to his military leave to Iraq, gift cards are greatly appreciated instead of gifts to help them start out their future together."

Usually, people want direction on what to buy anyways, hence store registries. I know I wouldn't be offended to read that given their situation.

I saw a really cute idea - where you get a mini wedding dress (like a flower girls dress) and then with clothes pins or something more decorative they clip the cards and dollars to the dress. Good Luck!!

How about a wishing well. Have someone build a table top size well-that way the guest can put the money in a card into the well.

Here's hoping that this family will come out of the days ahead stronger and even closer together. I can only imagine how daunting it must be to know that their son will soon be off to a far away land!

The money tree sounds wonderful. I can remember going to a party where they used a wishing well instead of a tree with the same idea in mind. I have seen these in party supply stores. A new twist on the same idea.

Best wishes to the happy folks to be! I hope this helps!

Warm regards,

You might consider gift cards rather than cash.(even visa cash gift cards are available) Then people can put them on a display. We did this for a shower I just cannot remember what the display looked like. You may want to put this out to millions on yahoo answers and see what kind of response you get. :)

Please do NOT mention bringing money on the invitation. It would be very poor etiquette to ask people to bring money, or even a present for that matter. You can spread the word around verbally about what you would like to do for this couple. Remember, a shower is to congratulate the couple and request their presence, not their purses.
I still think it poor taste to display money, since some guests will not bring money or be able to afford to, displaying the cash will make people feel uncomfortable. Perhaps you can decorate a basket or mailbox where guests can slip their cards and money into. That way the engaged couple will have a record of those who brought gifts so they can send a thank-you card.
Being an event coordinator I just had to let you know! I don't think any of us would like to receive an invitation with even "cute" wording about bringing money. I may turn some guests away. I'd just send them out and then try to pass the word around that they would prefer gift cards or money because of their situation!
