Ideas for a Thoughtful Gift...

I'm getting married on May 28th... we're not having a wedding party, per se, just 2 little flower girls who are almost 3, and my son as the ring bearer. He's 5. I got the 2 flower girls bride Barbie dolls as a gift for being in the wedding, but I'm at a loss as to what to give my son. I want to give him something special, something somewhat commerative, not some junk he'll forget about in a day, but at the same time, I want it to be something fun for him, so he's not disappointed when the girls get dolls, and he gets, say, a silver engraved piggy bank.

Can you please help me think of something to give him? I want him to feel special. I'm not opposed to giving him 2 gifts, perhaps something commerative, and something fun, but still need ideas, as I'm at a loss on this one.

Thanks, ladies.

So What Happened?

I love the idea of giving him jewelry, specifically a ring. Actually, he has really been wanting one. We got a good family friend's little girl a ring this year for her birthday, and he really wanted one too. Trouble is, they don't really sell many, if any, rings for little boys in stores... Plus, he has Man Paws, so kids rings are even probably in general, too small for him. SOOO, I love the idea of us giving him a ring, just like we are giving each other rings... and I found this one that I like. I would get the inside inscribed with something... thinking maybe: We Love You 5.28.11 You can use 20 characters. I'm thinking he'll probably fit in a size 5, but I am going to run him into Walmart tonight to let them measure his finger, just to see for sure what size he is, and if this ring is even an option... Naturally, I need to get it ordered asap. Thoughts? Ideas on the inscription?

As for a toy, I'd LOOOOVE to get him an ipod touch. He has a DS, and a Leapster, but he prefers to play with my phone. For some reason, he is much more accustomed to using the touch screen, and seems to understand how to do the activities and play the games much better on my phone than he does on his DS. Plus the games are so stinking expensive, whereas on the ipod touch, many are free, or really inexpensive. I didn't intend to buy him an ipod touch, but I know he'd treasure it, and it is a really special occasion, so....... we'll see if I can work it into the budget. ;)

Also love the digital camera idea. If I can't swing the ipod touch, might go with the ring and a camera...

Hmmm... Tough one!

I think the idea of two gifts might be your best bet since you have already done the barbies for the girls.

I think for a commemorative gift, you could do something like a letter for him to open later in life. Something sharing with him how much he means to you, what you feel like having him share this special day with you, etc. We did something like this for our kids' first birthdays. We created a time capsule. People put meaningful words and items in a "capsule" I created. Each child can open it and read it later. Same idea here....

Or, get him a savings bond or a CD - something that he will really appreciate down the road.

And then, I would get him that toy he has been asking, no begging, for over the past few months. There has to be one, right?! Get it for him! Is it a video game? My son was begging for a Nintendo DS at around that age.

Good luck L.!

What about a kid's digital camera? It will be something fun for him to use and he may get some really fun interesting bridal pics for you. We got my son one when he was about to turn 3 as a big brother gift. At five he still uses it when we go special places. He has gotten a lot of joy out of that camera. The picture quality isn't fantastic (he has never seemed to notice), but he's always so proud and I love saving the pictures and seeing the world through his eyes.

This might sound silly, but even at age 5, my son loved gift cards. My hubby and I would give him a gift card for Legoland or Target or Toys R Us for his birthday, and then when it came time to use it, we would make kind of a production out of it, with lunch, going shopping with his giftcard and then ice cream or something of his choice.
Do you have a Build a Bear? They have some fun things for boys. Mabey he would enjoy that!

Congratulations, L.! I was just wondering yesterday if your wedding day was getting close! :)

Tough one L....

My thought is that you could do something little for him to open that he would really love to play with immediately after the wedding. Then do something "special" like a piece of jewelry for him to wear as an adult.

My aunt got married last year. She has one child, he has two. Similarly- very small wedding with just family and the kids as the bridal party. They had "right hand rings" made for the children that were similar to their wedding bands to symbolize their new family. They gave the rings to the children (slightly older than yours) after they exchanged rings. It was very beautiful.

Maybe stick with a toy now and then something more symbolic for the future?
