I think, since you dont do animals, pick a color, and do all shades of it, or pick two colors and one accent. Then you can do fun shapes color on color, or do stripes, and then all the stuff you get just has to be that color, no matter what store or brand you get it in. It is easy to shop and match...Good Luck and congratulations!!!!

We did primary colors for my son-red, yellow, blue and it looked great! I have also seen ABC themed room - this will grow with the baby which happens so much faster than you'd think!

My sons room is the Moon & the STars and it is adorable.
I had someone custom paint the room, and I think it looks wonderful. Great idea if you plan on having more than one child, somewhat neutral.

Try Land of Nod, Pottery Barn Kids, and Babies R Us. We don't truely know your taste, so you are most likely going to have to browse the stores or shop online to fine exactly what you want. Wendy Bellismo (sold at BRU) has wonderful bedding sets and bedroom decor. The designs are pretty much gender neutral and the prices are better than PBK and LON.
Good luck!

For my sons, we did a sports theme room and a transportation theme room. These two themes are very abundant in not only the baby section, but the older boy section. I didn't want to have to change things out and repaint, etc. every few years when they got older and grew out of a their cribs or a certain character they liked. So, I have their rooms set up in these themes, and if they really want a particular character, I let them buy that sheet set. I replace the sheets every few years anyway, so this way they get their character, but it is hidden under their themed comforter and the room is pretty maintenance free for many years. They shouldn't grow out of these themes until their teenage years.

My son is 8-months-old now. I didn't like any of the "traditional" boy things when we went looking, either. I didn't want cars, trains, dogs, etc. What I ended up with was a crib-set that was brown, really soft, bears on it, with pale green and cream. Very neutral. Then when we did the walls, we put up a chair rail and put a matching pale green on the top section, with a coordinating taupe on the top. It keeps the theme neutral, and easy to change around as he gets older.

I know it's expenxive, but POttery Brn Kids has some really cute, what I guess you'd call, "Americana" theme stuff. Red gingham & blue gingham sheets, red and blue striped or starred comforters. My boys are a little older now, and I'm thikning of switching. Maybe get some of those large metal stars to hang on the walls??? The best part of this idea is that it's "baby"-specific... in other words, the child can grow with the theme.

I also like the airplanes & trains!

GOOD LUCK!

I went the Pottery Barn route with plaids and colors instead of a theme. For the room I put up a border that has Radio Flyer wagons, trikes, etc., and a baseball glove, teddy bear and some birds sitting on a fence. Congrats on the boy - I have two of my own.

We are big Illini fans, so our son's room was decorated in Illini style. The bottom part of the walls (up to chair rail height) is painted orange, we left the top part white, and placed 'Illini' wallpaper border between the two colors. We have jersey mesh curtains that are navy blue with a valance that has the Chief Illiniwek head on it. The crib skirt, bumpers, and glider/ottoman were done in a dark denim fabric and we have 4 crib sheets of various complementary styles (two sport-themed, one navy stars, and one navy gingham). We also have an Illini lamp, college flag on the wall, a gnome dressed in Illini sweats, Illini garbage can, and other various affects. Believe it or not, even with all the Illini stuff in there it does not look tacky or like a sports bar (I wouldn't allow it to be that way).

The room's decor is completely transitional and could be something suitable for a teenager if he liked the theme.

We opted not to know the sex of the baby for both of our kids. So, the nursery is a granny apple green. When we moved our son into his own room, we painted it a neutral blue, not pastel. I got car stickies, but he is outgrowing them now... so I've been checking out the company store, amazon, etc.

I love the airplane suggestion. I had seen a great plane in pottery barn kids ages ago, and then waited too long to order.
Anyways, any plane would be great, along with other vehicles.

The company store use to have wallie type decals of construction vehicles, that have nice colors, not cheesy looking. Matching bedding, if you can afford it. Lots of themed bedding there. I usually buy a top OR bottom sheet, and mix it with plain bedding colors from kohls, etc.

Cost plus world market has some animals (frog comes to mind) that hang from a wood ring and spring up and down. Fun for over the changing table.

Other themes: space (see costco.com, moon in my room), racetrack, sandbox/beach, fairytale -jack and the beanstalk, etc, vintage disney characters, treefort, castle... if you like to paint you could do some mural to enhance the theme.

edit: one more... alphabet wall cards might start you out on a good theme. I got the garden alphabet from eeboo (eboo?). They are available at land of nod, red envelope.com, and amazon has many. Very cute, and great artwork at a reasonable price.

best of luck, and congratulations. let us know what you decide.

Hi Krystal!
I actually LOVE the Come Sail Away boys bedding. I'm not into all the animals and all of that either and I am, if my 3rd is a boy, going to do the boat theme for the nursery. I found it at Overstock.com but I'm sure other places have it.

CONGRATULATIONS to you and many blessings! Becoming a mother is the most wonderful thing to happen in life. Enjoy this time and the journey to come.

We did a surfing/beach theme for my son's room. We bought the surfboard Wallies to decorate his sand-colored walls. We stuck with basic sheets in blue and white and my mom made a bedskirt for the crib out of surfboard fabric I found at JoAnn. Pottery Barn usually has some great beach-themed baby rooms in the spring and summer.

I'm really happy with it because it will grow with him. There's nothing cartoonish or babyish or pastel in his room.

Best of luck!!!

For my first son we found a classic painting we loved and had it replicated on his wall. Then the bedding was made to coordinate with the colors.

My second son we took classic books that we liked and even ones from today and had the characters painted on the walls. Like 3 little pigs, winnie the pooh, Guess How Much I Love you rabbits, curious george and then on the wall behind his crib we had the saying from Dr. Suess about the more you read the more places you will go painted on it. You can even do the little engine that could or whatever books you love. Then we also had bedding made to match.

I like very traditional bedding and so not having themed bedding worked well for me. It allowed me to decorate however I wanted. Their bedskirts are made out of chenile and cotton fabric. They have white sheets and the bumper is a yellow gingham. It is very shabby chic which I love. Good luck!!!

by the way I have also seen cute fire trucks, trains, planes, sports themes, construction, etc. Land of Nod has very cute ideas as well. Google pulls up some great ideas too! Hope this helps!

Krystal,

Congratulations!! As one of the other mom's suggested, you can do something that your little boy can grow into. The baby theme is cute for about a year and then you realize, oh well my son is a little boy now and the decor doesn't really fit him anymore. And then you have to spend more money and redo the room or just live with what you have because you don't want to spend more. It is a tough choice :(. I did my son's room in a transportation theme. There is plenty of bedding at Babies R Us to fit that theme. That way when your son is 2 or 3 or 4 it will still fit. And you can just make slight modifications as he grows from baby to toddler.

Hope this helps.

Hi Krystal,
Congratulation on your baby boy! What we did for our son and I still love it, is we purchased the Patchwork Pooh set from Babies R Us. It's cute and not overly cheesy or girly at all. We painted his room a soothing light blue and bought these Pooh stick ons for the walls. (also from babiesrus). Our furniture is wood colored not white so we got wood frames for pictures on the wall. The result was a baby boy's room that is cool without being too cutesy. We love it!

I had the cutest room for my son when he was born. I was so bummed out because when he was about a year old, my husband got a job transfer and we had to move to Colorado and sell the house. Anyway, here's what I did. I painted it a sky blue. Then I bought textured white paint and used a sponge to make clouds. Then I bought some wallpaper border that had really cool planes on it, not toy ones, pictures of actual planes. I cut out the planes and stuck them onto the wall randomly. Then, I bought some really neat planes and hung them from the ceiling with fishing line. The room was absolutely adorable!

Our son is now 4 mos old so I can relate to the decor dilemma. I wanted to try to avoid really "commercial" stuff that seemed to put your decor ideas into a really rigid theme.

SO, I found some really fun fabric that has vintage (like from the 50s) cowboys and began with that as an Idea. We found old rodeo posters and looked for other sort of western items (spurs, sheriff star)at flea markets etc. The bedding I got from a website called Javisdavis.com. They make custom bedding and have a TON of combinations (traditional toiles, modern geometrics, etc) and great designers that help you pull the look together. The bedding was definitely the splurge, but we found bargains in other places. I LOVE his room and I know that it is unique and different.

The other fun part was what people got for us at the shower etc. It is amazing the creative and fun items that people will find or make if you have a theme that isn't all pre-packaged at Babies R Us.

I was also able to paint the walls a chambray blue, which I feel will carry through his childhood without having to do a lot of re-decorating as he gets older. We treated one wall with a brush so it looks like fabric and it's pretty neat. I must also emphasize that I am NOT a handy person at all, so it was really easy to do.

Best of Luck and let us know how things turn out.

Our first was adopted at 21mos old boy, so I couldnt
go with anything too babyish. I did maybe what some people
might consider backwards, but I found a border that was
a nursery rhyme...Hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle
etc....the cow jumping over the moon etc. And then
we just added plain primary color sheets , lamp etc .
We did have the ceiling and walls done in clouds obove the border and another color below....it was really cute!!!!
And even stuck the glow in the dark stars to the ceiling.
Someone at work liked it so well she went out and got
the same border but in pastels for her newborn!! Good luck and have fun!!!!

Personally, I wouldn't choose a branded or licensed-character theme. It seems like the stuff is so ridiculously overpriced and the quality is not great. Plus, you're limited in what pieces you can find. Keep it general and make it easy on yourself and people buying gifts for you - jungle, space, planes, sports, sock monkeys, whatever.

I think it depends on what you want to do: keep it a babies room OR have the decor into his toddler years. I wanted to keep the decor for awhile so I went with a baseball theme. I also love the idea of a dog theme, dinosaurs, cars, trucks, and trains. You can get great ideas from Pottery Barn kids or from Company Kids. http://www.thecompanystore.com/defaultkids2.asp?code=macs...

Congratulations! I have two boys myself and love it!! I have to say I am a sucker for Classic Winnie the Pooh. I used the same set for both of them. I was lucky to find one that had the ABC reading theme, which had more of blue and red in it (alot of them have pinks/purples). So, I was excited to find this that looked more boyish. I found it on clearance. I do agree with Christy D, in the fact that they outgrow this very quickly, so if you could find some theme that will stick with them for a little while, it is much easier. If you find something you like, check out ebay and see if someone is selling it, you might find a good deal on some things. This was such a fun time for me trying to find all the decor! Have fun looking, and don't worry, there will be something out there that will just hit you, and you'll feel "that's it". Good luck! T.

Hi! You have a lot of help already but I'll put my two cents in anyhow...
It certainly can be hard to find baby stuff that isn't animal related! What about teddy bears? Too animal-ish? Or sports? Have you been to Babies R Us yet? They have a massive wall of bedding and decor, you could just go and look for ideas. Same with Burlington Coat Factory's Baby Depot.

Good Luck:)

just an fyi: babies dont use sheets or blankets for the first year as they can be a Sudden Infant Death (SIDS) risk. Bumpers are out too - also a SIDS risk. I remember going off to buy a lovely bed set for my little one only to discover that I couldn't use any of it. I was so disappointed as I loved what I had chosen. For the winter months, you can put the baby in a sleep cozy. They are usually sleeveless. You can find some that match the bottom sheet sometimes.

Enjoy your little boy when he arrives. They are magic.

If you need any info on safety issues, consumer reports www.consumerreports.org and www.kidsindanger.org and www.aap.org are great resources.
