Hi:
I am writing to you all to request ideas and names of locations for fun, reasonablly priced day trips, 2-3 day trips or vacations for my family. We are new to the area and have not had much time to explore. My husband and I both work long hours and would love to have a variety of places/ideas to spend time with our family that will not cost another loan. :-) We have three children that are 3 yrs, 5 yrs and 12 yrs (all boys), who are always asking for somewhere to go or to do something. I am open to all ideas to include amusement and water parks, public parks, playgrounds/trails, pools and beaches, sporting events and theater/cinema etc. We don't mind traveling so it does not need to be next door. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend the Sandpiper hotel on Virginia Beach. It's reasonably priced, right on the beach, and there is a permanent carnival right next door during the warm months.
Hi, A.. I see you live in Knoxville, MD. I was raised in Brunswick (now live in Boonsboro). I am one of 7 kids, so my parents were always looking for fun, inexpensive trips. I don't know if you like to camp or prefer hotels, but both are readily available. One of the fun things we liked to do was go up to Gettysburg and camp for the weekend. Your boys would probably enjoy the civil war site seeing. Another fun trip is to go up to Blackwater Falls in WV or driving down Skyline Drive (the national park has both camping and hotels that are very inexpensive). You can do any of these in either day trips or 2-3 day trips. There's always Hershey Park (which is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Knoxville. Virginia Beach is also a great family trip in the summer -- it's not too far away for a quick 2-3 day trip and also has great accomodations that are reasonably priced. If you want to do a longer beach trip, we like Myrtle Beach. If you go pre- or post-season, you can get some great deals on condos/houses. The water is great up through October. It's a long drive, but well worth it. The Eastern Shore is another great place to explore that is not too far away. Baltimore and DC are great day trips.

There is hotel/ water park called Great Wolf Lodge. The water park is actually inside the hotel. Your hotel price generally includes the water park admission. The rooms are great because they have special kids areas with t.v. and bunk beds. I think it's worth checking out.
If you and your family like the beach, then you should go to Ocean City Maryland. We go every year right after Labor Day when the rates are lower. We also stay at Frontiertowne which is a Western Theme camping resort. You can go "primitve" camping which is you and your tent, get a site with water and electric hook-ups, rent a Camping Cabin or do what we do, we rent a Campming Trailer which comes with all the comforts of home. Plus you are only minutes from the actual beach and all of the excitement of Ocean City. This is way cheaper than getting a Motel room and alot more fun and relaxing.
