Ideas for the 6 Month Old?

Mamas & Papas

Any ideas and suggestions for good games or toys for a six month old who is nearly crawling and can manage to stay seated for a few minutes at a time?

He is pretty content in his exersaucer, babbling and watching our fish swim. He is thrilled to be near ds1, and pretty happy to mouth shake and push about anything.

The blocks, shape sorters, musical toys that I've saved or been gifted seem a bit beyond him right now.

Thanks for your thoughts

At that age my kids both loved plain, old, empty boxes and some balls. They loved putting the balla in and out of the boxes.

We also had the Fisher Price ball popper that popped balls up into the air. My son played with it so much the motor stopped working. A call to FP and they sent us a brand new one.

I have an old Tupperware ball that has the pieces you put in the the correct spots. If I had one I think I had two and the one that is in the toybox now.

Many of the toys that I have now were the ones that my kids played with as babies. I think the phone is in the box and not the popper that you pushed. There was the ring thing that they loved to play with. I found a pattern to make a cloth one but haven't yet. Some of the trucks that i have are the metal Tonka ones that survived my son and have not dents or damage and he was a rough kid.

Perhaps a second hand store has some toys or the web. Good luck on your search.

I remember at that stage having these Fisher Price Toys that if they pushed a button, or slid a lever, a barnyard animal would pop up. And make a little squeak. And then there was an old Fisher Price toy I had where the 'people' were actually balls. Lots of things to try to push down and as they get a bit older (maybe 8 months) they can use the balls more.

They were handed down to me - I'm not even sure if they make toys like that any more - but they were excellent because it was a bigger toy so would occupy them for a while. It took a while for them to master it (maybe months) but that's when I would show it to them and there was always something they could work.

Kind of like those old toys we hung on the sides of cribs back in the day. Where they could boing a lever and it made a noise, and you could spin a circle and push something to make a ding ...

I may be dating myself now.

If I can find a modern variation, I'll post the link. But those were life savers to me. But like you, my older toddlers were the biggest entertainment. Wish I'd had fish. Never thought of that!

ETA: Couldn't find what I was looking for. They must no longer exist.

But I did have one of these and it was well loved. Mind you the music drove me nuts and I still remember it. But this provided a lot of fun.

rolling a ball back and forth
little tykes drum or xylophone to bang on - or even just a pot or box and spoon works! lol

any thing that is geared for a 12 month old should give your little one interest. you could also make a few simple toys yourself, just search pinterest for ideas. when my son was 6 months old we got him this https://www.google.com/express/product/107846501658203102... he loved putting the letters in and hearing the toy talk about them. when he started walking he loved pudhing it around (dd loved walking it around too) and both loved riding on it till i gave it away a few months ago i always got toys for my kids that were about 6 months older than they were, and now i get stuff a year or more older for them. they do well with the challenges of the higher age levels and love it when they figure it out (my 5 yr old will put together circuits for the snap circuit jr which is age rec. 8+ and my 4 yr old loves to help him)
so don't be afraid to get toys for 1 and 2 yrs of age even though your child is not that old
