I was induced with my daughter and I wouldn't change a thing. I loved that I was able to know when she was going to be born and plan everything out and not have to try to remember last minute if I had gone into labor. They induced me at 7:00 that morning and my daughter was born and 12:45 that afternoon.

Good Luck,
J. C

Unless there is a medical reason to be induced I would reconcider. The changes of having a C Secion increace drastically with a schedualed induction!

Hey, Ethans Mommy --

Congratulations on your new little one! I had an induction with my first (so far, only) baby last March, and it was fine. It took ALL DAY to deliver my boy, but he was fine, I was fine, and there were no problems. I would do it again.

I think, more than whether to induce or not, the real question that has the most relevance to your birth experience is "Do you trust and like your doctor/caregiver?" I love my doctor, and the whole hospital where I gave birth (of course, my Dad works there, though not in Labor & Delivery, so I ought to, right?) so it was a positive experience.

All the best,
Mel

I was induced with my second because my water had broken, and they needed to deliver her before infection became an issue.

There was a discussion last week about induction - you may want to search it.

Generally, drugs used to induce labor bring it on a little harder and a little quicker than would naturally occur if your own oxytocin (labor hormone) were to bring on labor.

Right after the pitocin started setting in, the anesthesiologist became available, and I received my epidural, so I really never felt the full effect of the pitocin.

Good luck.

Hey there! I was induced with baby 1 and 3... I like the fact that there are no surprises... you know exactly when you're going into labor (no waking up in the middle of the night with pains thinking 'is this it?!). They say that pitocin brings on contractions harder and faster than what would naturally happen, but honestly, it's CHILDBIRTH, it's going to hurt no matter what. I had epidurals with all 3 of my kids, so the pitocin wasn't really an issue. I just liked how under control everything was when being induced as opposed to going into labor naturally. Good luck and congrats!

Oh my gosh, do not listen to all the negative comments. Everyone's pregnancy and delivery experience is totally different so you should not worry that your experience is going to be like anyone else's.

I was induced with both of my children. The first one was because I was at the hospital and in labor but I was not progressing, so I wouldn't really call that an induction.

My second one was planned 2 weeks before my due date because my baby was measuring so big. He was 10 lbs 5 oz and 23 inches long. I am glad my dr. induced me because if I would have went the full 2 weeks I probably would have had a 12 pounder.

Everything went pretty quick after they induced me at 5:00am I delivered at 1:07pm. I didn't have any pain until they broke my water, after that I got my epidural and everything was fine.

Good luck to you! No worries, everything will be just fine.

I went into labor naturally with my first and was induced with my second. Labor went SO much faster the second time (which was fantastic, since I was in labor for 52 hours the first time). I know there is increased risk of C-section with induction and I did end up having an emergency C-section, although it had nothing to do with the induction. My induction experience was good.

I was induced with all 3 of mine and had no problems. I love that you're going in after midnight, then you can probably sleep for the first 5 hours or so of the pitocin. They always scheduled me to come in at about 6 am so I really wasn't going to go back to sleep after getting there.

Good luck,
K.

Hi there,

I was induced, somewhat. My water broke but I was only 1.5 cm dilated. They gave me two hours to progress and I had no change so they started pitocin to get things moving. Since they don't like to wait longer than 24hrs if your water breaks and you haven't delivered yet. It was also my first pregnancy, so maybe they thought it was going to take some time.

All I have to say about the pitocin is, it felt like my contractions (and the pain) went from 0-60 in no time fast! I wasn't really having any painful contractions before they gave it to me. Thankfully after I got to 4cm they stopped the pitocin drip and brought on the epidural!

Good luck!

Good luck

The only pro that I can think of is that you won't be pregnant anymore! Yes of course there are fun things about it, but I was miserable with my first. I was swelling and my back hurt, I was so glad to have my baby. But of course I also was ready to meet her. Then again you will know the day you are going to have her and the anxiety of water breaking in public is somewhat relieved. Come on you know you had those thoughts and probably ran through every possible embarrasing scenario in your head. The con? They might need to cook a bit longer, but trust your doc. They know when its safe!!! Good luck. And don't listen to horror stories! Every induction is different just like every pregnancy, labor, and delivery is different. Good luck!!!

I was induced with my second baby. Pros - it is quicker (for me) and you are prepared. Cons - the baby may be of size, but not ready to come out. Mine was nearly 8 pounds, but he came out with saggy skin because he did not have his full baby fat layer and had a hard time learning to suckle properly. He turned out just fine, but I felt so sorry for the little guy having to come out before his time!

I was induced, the day before my due date. (Pres Bush was coming to give a speech at my hospital, so they werent going to admit people, and I wanted to have her there, so we induced! hee) It was nice. They started it at 7 am, and I had her at 5ish. I'm a big baby with pain, so I got an epidural when it started hurting, and it was peaceful and nice. My parents had time to get here, from 7 hours away, with the advance notice, which was great since I really wanted my dad to be one of the first people to hold is granddaughter. Good luck!

I think each situation is different. If you trust your doctor and he/she truly believes baby is ready, then I think it's a good thing. The only people I know that have had major issues with inducing are people in Military Hospitals. That's another story. I trusted my doctor, we had medical reasons to induce and I was dilated and effaced when I arrived for induction two weeks early. Learn about C-Sections too (I have lots of friends induced and not that have had to them - myself included). My doctor wasn't one to rush to do C-Sections, I confirmed this with my labor and delivery nurse too. I knew I was in good hands; hope you feel the same with your doctor and hospital you're going to. Best of luck to you for delivery and life with little one.

hi, my son was due June 13 and I was induced June 27th. I was 1/2 cen. dialated, so not much. Overall I thought it was a good experience, my first child and labor took 10 hours and I had no epidural. I think you'll be fine. Good luck and God Bless!

I was induced with my youngest due to his size. I am a very small person and he was measureing 7 1/2 lbs at 36 weeks , we induced 3 weeks later and he was 9 1/2 lbs at birth. I was not able to deliver him naturally in the end because he was just too big. He got stuck had to do emergency C section.
The pros are you don't have to guess when little one is goign to come! Cons are you're hooked up to an IV and cant really get around much.

I decided not to use the Huntville women's clinic because of their extremely high induction rate (more than 50%, one doc told me can get as high as 90%) and high c-section ( app. 37%, and that is accurate info from the hospital). I am new to the area and only know four moms that used that hospital. Of the four three had csections. One returened to her doc after because of fever. Another one delivered her first vaginally with an induction at 49 wks, but the baby had to spend an afternoon in NCIU b/c of breathing difficulties. She was a small baby taken to early. many of the doctors there will schedule inductions for their own schedule and not necessarily what is best for mom and baby.
Talk with you doctor about the reasoning for the induction. If you trust your doctor then proceed with confidence. Best of luck, either way you are close to being a new mom! Congrats.

K., my first two came on there own 1 day late. With my 3rd, I was swelling really bad, and having contractions, etc, so he told me it was my decision. (he wanted me to do it because he was concerned about my swelling) I have friends and relatives with really bad experiences at being induced. well, not BAD, but they tried to induce and it didn't work and they were stuck in the hospital another day. I was torn. But I decdied to go ahead and do it 2 days before my due date. He came in and broke my water at 0740 and started the Pitocin. She was born at 10:28. I think if the baby is ready or you have a medical necessity, it's fine. don't just do it for convenience or it may end up being more of an inconvenience. (and may not be the best thing for the baby)
It hurt when he broke my water. the first two, my water broke on its own and it iddn't hurt at all. Also, he pressed really hard to try to get all the amniotic fluid out and that was uncomfortable.
Good luck!

i was one week late with my son so they induced i was thankful because i was sure he was huge the drs thought he wouldnt be much over 7lbs. they used the cervadil wafer on me. it was put in at 9pm on a weds and removed at 7am thurs. my contractions started at 1 am. things had slowed by noon so they broke my water (3cm) by 2 pm i was going full speed ahead and contractions would not stop to give me a break. around 5:30pm i got the epidural. at 8:30pm i said hello it is time they checked and i was 10 cm. started pushing then and at 10:20pm my son (9 lbs 2 oz) was born. i was sooo glad they let me be induced had i waited i am sure i would not have been able to have my son without a c section. Good luck!

For me, they were going to induce on a Wed. morning for my little girl and about 3 a.m., I started having contractions but not very frequent. They went ahead when we arrived and hooked me up to the same IV they would have used regardless. This just makes your contractions start or hopefully increase in frequency. My water had to be broken with both babies and that didn't hurt one tiny bit, just made me feel the contractions more strongly. As soon as they broke my water, I needed the epidural immediately and then it was smooth sailing for me .. didn't feel another contraction, just watched them on the monitor .. yipee! I hope yours goes smoothly!

I would not recommend it. I had three children with no drugs at all then my doctor talked me into inducing with my fourth child. He said that he didn't want me to have this baby in the car. ( I labor very quickly) Found out that he just didn't like to come in on weekends to deliver babies. He induced a lot. Anyways, I still wanted to do it without drugs. The labor is very hard and very quick. No time to rest between labor pains. I did end up having to take some drugs just to get through them. The nurses kept suggesting that I get a epidural but I won't do that. So anyway, I did have a wonderful baby boy but it was the only time I needed drugs with four births.

I was induced with all 3 of my kids...one was at 35 weeks due to my water breaking and the other 2 were at 38 and 39 1/2 weeks. I had a great experience with them all. Shortly after starting the pitocin, the anesthesiologist came in with the epidural. I never really felt any pain with any of mine and they were all fairly quick labor and deliveries. All of my kids were born within 6 hours of getting to the hospital. I think as long as you have begun to dilate and efface, you should be fine. Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you!
