Hello-
We're expecting #2 at the end of January and will need to move my son who will be 21 months old at that time into a new bedroom. We don't want to spend a lot of money on a second crib that he might only use for a few months and I was wondering if any one has experience with the IKEA cribs and mattresses? We were also thinking of purchasing the dressers and such to complete the room and I'd love to hear thoughts on how well it holds up. Our plan is to use the furniture until he is a little older (5-8 years) at which time we'll invest in better quality furniture.
Thanks! I'm excited now about picking out his room and knowing the stuff will hold up for awhile. I know putting it together won't be a party but that's what husbands are for right?!?!!
I love my Ikea Diktad set. We got the crib, wardrobe, changing table with hutch and toybox. They have retired the set though. We've had them for 4 years with no problems.
We bought a bookshelf and dresser (not kids' specifically) for my son's room. He's only a year and a half, but both have had a workout already! They are holding up great. My sister has an IKEA crib and loves it. We decided on their furniture because we didn't want anything expensive in his room while he was young, and my friend has had a dresser from there and has used it for over 7 years so we knew it wouldn't break easily. I actually like the drawers in his dresser much more than our own which was much more expensive!
I love Ikea, but Target had a great crib that we bought our daughther for 150. It is convertible into a full bed too. I love it, it is absolutely beautiful and has a drop side (which I need because I am only 5'1.
We got the bunk beds about 10 years ago and they have held up well. The dressers have held up as well.
When we had our first we spent lots of money to get an all oak crib and dresser and that dresser has had some major problems. Not the IKEA stuff, it just keeps going!
It does take awhile to put together. I remember many cuss words when hubby was working on that project. That might be a good time for an outing with you and the little man. :-)
I love Ikea! I have storage furniture in my kid's play room and it has held up wonderfully. It is easy to clean and I have yet to see a nick and I have two boys! I have the Trofast systems

I think it is all comparable and worth it.
We have a dresser and a toddler bed both from Ikea in our son's room. We also have an Ikea dresser and lots of other ikea furniture.. although nothing upholstered... We've been very happy with the quality. My husband has lots of tools and is very good at assembling things... that's probably the main thing. The instructions from Ikea are not easy to follow!
But everything has held up very well. We're going to use the toddler bed for our daughter when she's ready for a big girl bed, and we'll probably buy our son a full size bed from there, too, at that point...
FYI... our son was in his toddler bed at 16 months... do you really need another crib? why not just switch to either a mattress on the floor or a toddler bed?
We did exactly what you did w/number two. We actually left the crib in the nursery and bought my older son a crib that converts to a toddler bed (I think it was around 150.00). He used it for over a year and my other son has been in it for over a year and it's holding up fine. You can actually use regular mattresses in them as well.
I love Ikea furniture. They have improved the runners on the dressers and are much better. We had a bunk bed (malm-I think) taht my kids destroyed but they pretty much destroy everything. However, I believe they discontinued the style. We still have dressers for over 4 years now. We will also be going to Ikea when we get a new TV. I love their tv stands, etc and the storage options are great. As long as you put it together properly, you should not have a problem.
