I'm in Need of a Great Halloween Costume

Hey there, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good costume shops-or stores- that sell cute, realistic costumes...My one year old is TINY and she still wears 6-9 month clothes. All the costumes I've found up to now are either really cheesy, cheap looking, or not age appropriate (for example, dressing her up as a pea pod would be cute, but how will she crawl/walk in it).

I don't like scary, gory costumes. I don't like pricess themed anything costumes. I saw a pretty cute scare crow somewhere, but can't remember where now (or if it's even in her size). Any ideas for something cute would be really helpful...and not that my kids have to match or anything, but we already got my son a pair of doctor scrubs for his costume.

What can I do next?

onestepahead.com and costumecauldron.com have some cute costumes that usually fit babies in 6m. I just ordered my son a cute baby dragon costume.

I just bought pony costume for my one year old son! He wears 12/18 month sizes but I think this comes smaller. They have lots of great costumes on here:

I really love Old Navy halloween costumes. They are very well made for the price and warm and comfortable. My daughter is three and 1/2 and this will be the second year we bought a costume for her there. She is going to be a lady bug. They're all cute, usually animal or insect related, but warm and well made. I think her costume was $22. They also have infant sizes which is nice too.

Hey T. - last year my daughter (1 year then) was a ladybug! I found the costume at Target (I think) - but it is basically just a pullover and she wore black sweater tights and a black onsie underneath. VERY cute, comfortable - and she was able to walk/crawl and run around. I also liked that the hood was easy to slip on/off and there was no fussing with a headband that she would just rip off anyway. I think I remember them having different animals, etc. - maybe check out their website!

Hi T.,

Yesterday I drove by the Bi-mart on fourth plain blvd. in orchards and saw a new costume store in that little mini mall that you might want to check out!

Costco has a large assortment of smaller size costumes. I don't know if they go that small but they do have toddler sizes.

When my grandchildren were babies and toddlers we purchased their costumes at the Disney Store. We bought a size or even two larger so that they could used them for a couple of years. My granddaughter, who is 7, and her friends still use her Snow White costume for dress up. She wore her piglet costume all year round for a couple of years which makes it worth the price.

This year she found a spider costume at Value Village. They stock new merchandise for Halloween. I don't know if they have smaller sizes.

Last year, when he was 3, my grandson wore Spiderman pjs.

I also saw pictures and instructions for making simple but cute costumes, using already made items of clothing, in a children's magazine. It may have been the one put out by Nickolodeon.

Another year I also saw easy to make costume instructions in either Family Circle or Women's Day.
As I recall some were no sew. They might be on the Internet.

You could assemble an assortment of clothes (jeans with holes in the knees or make your own holes and print shirt with long sleeves)from a thrift store to make a scare crow costume. Use raffia or another paper product for the straw. Just unravel it and shred it and glue it to the clothes. Add a goofy hat with "straw sticking out" and use make up on her face. I think the Halloween make up washes off easier. My granddaughter likes to put on lipstick and it's a mess to get off.

I hope you find just what you want.

I am also looking for a costume for my daughter. She is 13 months right now and pretty small for her age (her weight is in the 10th percentile). I was thinking of maybe little red ridding hood but I don't know how to sew or where I could get something to fit her? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey T.:

If you hear about some good sources, I'd love to know too!

My son was 4 months old last year and was on the larger end of the scale (born 9lbs 4ozs). If you want a Lobster outfit, I have one. you could pull it up over her knees so she could crawl. I can e-mail a picture - pretty cute, but not exactly girly.

When my kids were younger I just bought a warm zip up outfit that was cute. I too wasn't really into all of the overpriced cheepy kids costumes and thought it was great to have the alternative of something that could be used all winter and be really cute. I got a tigger fleece thing that zipped up it was so cute. I was at Fred Meyer the other day and saw serveral (upgraded models) of what I bought when my kids were that age. IT's great because they can be warm, you can get to their diaper easily, and it doesn't hinder crawling.
