I'm in Pain!!!

We were in a boat accident in August. Since then, I have been having pain in my neck and between my shoulder blades, but mostly on my right side. I started going to a chiropractor about four weeks after the accident, he was adjusting me about every three days, but it is not helping, infact, it seems to be getting worse. Some nights, I need my husband to push me on my side so I can get up out of bed. I have never had any injury like this so I don't know what is normal pain, or if I should just suck it up. Or could it be something serious? Any mamas out there have any experience with neck/back pain from an accident?

What can I do next?

You may need physical therapy. I do both PT and chiro for back and neck issues and it really helps. Sometimes you need a little extra help when it comes to that part of the body.

I think you need to see a doctor asap.
Did someone check your ribs?
Good luck!

I would get checked out by your Dr!!!!!! I am dealing with a neck issue right now. FOr years I had some neck pain and upper back/shoulder discomfort. Always gave it up to bad posture..carrying 20-30 extra pounds, hunching over the computer, sleeping funny...all of that.

Then about 6 weeks ago, at the health club doing a machine I have done for weeks, with my work out mania hubby right there, something went wonky. Heated pain shot from my neck down my left shoulder and I swear, a flame should have shot out my middle finger. Tears and pain. I gave it a few days rest, ibuprofen and the heating pad, but it got no better. I went to the Dr and she had me twist and bend my arms a few simple ways and said I needed an MRI ASAP. She suspected a disc issue and definately a pinched nerve (the tingling and middle finger flame thing)

I had the MRI that night and I have 2 bulging to the left side discs in my neck (C6 & C7) and a pinched nerve. I had a steroid shot 3 weeks ago and will have another next week. I didn't much like the first shot but after a week there was improvement, so I am hoping for more after the intital pain part.

But I was told absolutely NO manipulation...no chiro or massage of any kind, as that can make it way worse very very quickly, and most of what I have read supports that. I also suffer from severe migraines and had my check up with my neurologist a week ago. She said the same thing...NO chiro or massage...it will make it worse!

Please go see your family Dr to rule out a more serious injury. FOr me, this is my spine...my neck, we are talking about. I am doing my own research and trusting my team of Dr's. I hate everything about this...the pain, not being able to do normal activities like carrying grocery bags and laundry baskets (for the most part)...but I AM healing ..SLOWLY.

Good luck.

Did they do x-rays, MRI? Not all chiropractors are good ones. A good one will recommend you to an orthopedic if needed and suggest physical therapy with your adjustment. You may want to consider a different chiropractor and/or getting an orthopedics opinion.

I would get an xray and MRI asap. Our friend had back pain and ignored it for awhile and it slowly got worse and worse. A year later he's on disability. If I ever have any kind of back pain, I rest as much as possible and if it doesn't go away (so far for me it has luckily) I'd be getting an MRI and xray asap. This isn't an area to mess around with. I have no idea what's wrong but it could be a disc (as it turns our is the problem with our neighbor) or something else but at least see if they can tell via an MRI or xray. And then I would say rest it as much as possible. I wouldn't leave this to a chiropractor.

did the chiropractor take xrays to ensure you don't have a bulging disc?

if you are still in pain, you need to get xrays taken and maybe an MRI to rule out a slipped or bulging disc.

sorry you are in pain! hope it gets resolved.

I was in a head on collision in 1990. For four years I was in severe pain, not realizing it was from whiplash. It caused me migraines every day, and I could barely turn my neck. I was real young and didn't know any better, so didn't think to seek any medical advice, and I was terrified of chiropractors. One day, I got brave and went to one. The doctor took x-rays of my neck and told me that the top of my neck was going the opposite way that it was suppose to cause a pinched nerve in the back of my head and she could not believe I went four years with that pain.
It took a lot of manipulation and several months before I felt any relief. She said sometimes during the stages of manipulation, it could feel worse but the overall outcome will make me feel a lot better and it did. It took about four-five months before I felt better and I could end the treatment.

It may take a while for you to feel better. The chiropractor has to do the manipulation little by little and it does take time.

If you want, you can inquire with your chiropractor about accupuncture. Sorry, not sure how to spell that. :-) That along with the manipulation may speed up the process of you feeling better.

Hope you feel better soon. :-D

Try a different chiropractor and definitely take a good calcium/magnesium supplement that does NOT contain calcium carbonate. Calcium is a natural painkiller and muscle relaxant. Also, after an accident, Ligaplex I from Standard Process heals the damaged ligaments that also cause pain when hypermobility exists.

My husband was injured at work. He saw a chiro for a while. The chiro had him get MRI and xray to see what was going on inside since it was an injury. After not getting any relief--and finally his job getting the correct worker's comp file going--the chiro even agreed that what he was doing was not helping and it would be better to see someone else. He ended up going to a neurosurgeon and having surgeries. The one thing we did learn from the experience (which I would never want to go through again) is that when it comes to pain in the back, if it is intense, continuous, or worsening you need more help. If you have not had any MRI or xrays done, see your doctor or ask the chiro to send you for some. Make sure nothing is out of place. The back is very delicate in that anything not where it should be can cause major problems or pain.

You need massage therapy and I would say Physical therapy now. Go see your doctor for a referal. Lots of muscle spasms going on in your neck and back area...I have the same issues but not as a result of an accident. The chiropractor should not be adjusting you 3x a week..yes that's too much and your body needs time to rebound. He should also be using electric stimulation and massage therapy in addition to manipulation for you to have improvement. Also, look at taking some additional joint supplements i.e. TripleFlex and Calcium/Mangesium combo to help with bones and joints. Go get that referal...I am sorry tha tyou are in pain..It is no fun..believe me I know.

it took a mix between chiropractic and massage therapy to help me with my back after an accidnet ut the pain is still not gone. I have ligament damage in my mid back...no fun at all..renders me usless more then I want it too..

my only suggestion is to make sure you ahve a good chiro working for you....there are some not so good onesout there.

I have had great luck with all chiropractors tht have graduated from Palmer college of chiropractic.

Could be sciatic nerve pain...which can be mild to crippling. I am dealing with it now...but right after my incident...couldn't get out of the bed without severe pain...nor walk. The sciatic nerve is located throughout your spinal column...and it is no joke and takes along time to heal. It's 4 months for me now.

I personally would not go to a chiropractor until I knew what was wrong with me. You really should go to your family doctor. I had whiplash and needed physical therapy.
