I used to work for a NON FOR PROFIT (this is key) that housed a Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) and they have locations in a number of places (and the ability to submit application online which is nice if you are a little nervous). THEY (after going over your income, bills, etc.) with you will work with you creditors for lower rates, a consolidated payment and help you establish a budget (considering your own personal job, situation) if needed. After living through my (soon to be ex) husband being out of work for 18 months, doing a refi and own movement of credit to lower rates etc. and that STILL not always being enough, I empathize. As a strong single Mommmy (which it sounds like you are), sometimes asking for help is hard but can REALLY help.
LIHEAP (at least back then) helped families struggling with heating costs during the winter too. Might be worth looking into.
Good luck.
