My five-year-old son just lost a tooth for the first time. It's one of the lower front teeth. The adult tooth coming in seems to be positioned behind the tooth line, and I'm wondering if that's normal. My memory is that when I lost teeth, the new tooth came in from underneath, not behind; but it was a long time ago, and this is our only child. He has a dental checkup scheduled in January - does this sound like a reason for an earlier visit?
Thanks for the reassuring feedback. I did call our dentist - which I guess I should have done in the first place - and they confirmed that this is normal.

My younger brother had a tooth grow in behind his two front teeth. His dentist said it could have been because he fell on his face when he was little and may have shifted his teeth. My kids and friends kids teeth followed the pattern of their parents teeth (good and bad)It is probably nothing to worry about, usually the other teeth even out the rest. Be happy there is a tooth growing in. My son lost two teeth within a week of each other and it took a year and a half before the adult teeth started to come thru. Best Wishes, Happy Hollidays!

My daughter had an adult tooth that was starting to come in behind her baby tooth. The baby tooth was very loose, so it didn't need to be pulled, but I was concerned about the adult tooth not lining up. The pedatric dentist said there really isn't anything they can do about where it comes in. She said to see how it grows, and the only way to fix it would be with braces later on.
Our first sons tooth we ended up having pulled because it was coming in behind the on that should have fallen out. I did not want him to have to wear bracing unless absolutely necessary.
i would make an appointment with the dentist. But I guess if you already have it set for early January it could wait but if it was me I would not let it wait. That is from a mom who wore braces for over 4 years when I was growing up.

We are in the same boat . ..5 year old, 2 teeth missing . . .both coming in all weird! Apparently this is normal.
My uncle is our dentist and I asked him and he concurred.
I guess they will start to shift as all the other teeth come in!

Don't worry, it is totally normal for the tooth to erupt lingually (or behind the tooth line) - I'm a dentist. The tooth will drift into position as it erupts further and then after. I know that it doesn't look right being behind where the deciduous tooth was, but he should be just fine. Congrats on your son losing his first tooth!
This is totally normal! Two years ago, my daughters big teeth actually started growing behind her baby teeth. Concerned, I took her to the dentist and asked about this. He said it was totally normal and the teeth would eventually move up and aline themsleves with the others. Which, two years later, they have.
This is very normal. The same thing happened with my oldest. It kinda freaked me out. I didn't expect the emerging tooth to appear until the baby tooth had fallen out. I called the peds dentist and was reassured that this is very common. Just for your own piece of mind, why don't you just call your dentist to ask as well?
EDIT: Be warned...when the top 2 center teeth come in the teeth are huge in comparison to their face/mouth. They look like Bugs Bunny for awhile until everything evens out.
