Incontinence in 8 Year-old

Does anyone else have a school-aged child with bladder problems? My daughter has had problems ever since pre-school. I thought she was almost potty-trained, when her pre-school teacher quit her job, and the lady that replaced her wouldn't let her go to the bathroom! I've had problems ever since. She's been to several doctors, and they say nothing is physically wrong with her, but she insists that she can't control it. I've seen her do it on occassion, but it just seems to get worse over time instead of better. I've read on the internet before that some kids' bodily functions just are slow in maturing, but I'm afraid that she will not grow out of this before she begins having a menstrual cycle (I started at age 11). We are homeschooling this year, and this helps her from getting embarrased, though she just became a Brownie, and I usually have her wear a Depends when we go out. She's very excited about the Girl Scouts. I'm hoping it will boost her confidence, and maybe that will help her with this problem.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone who offered me advice and shared their expeinces with me. In the past couple of weeks, I have brought my daughter to the doctor, who tried to help me by referring me to the Children's hospsital here, though to no avail. Today my son, daughter & I went to see a therapist, and we have set up weekly visits. Cross your fingers!

W.,

The Enuresis Treatment Center deals mostly with bed wetting, but their methods are top notch and they will give you an initial complementary consultation over the phone. If they can't help you, I am sure they can direct you to someone who can. You can contact them at www.nobedwetting.com or 1-800-379-2331.

Best of luck,
S.

Hi W.,

I have a 12 y.o. son that had the same problems till 9. He had some developmental problems, so I bring him to all kinds of doctors and therapists. When he was 9 one of the therapist noticed that he had very strange tolerance to pain: he was very sencitive on the skin, but couldn't feel much under the skin. So he could never feel when he needs to go during the day and could never control or stop if he started. After three weeks of deep tissue stimulation therapy, he never had another accident. Just a thought, but it helped us.

I would be interested in what sort of doctors you have gone to see. Have you been to a doctor that specializes in kidney and bladder functions? If you haven't seen a urologist I would ask for a referral and speak to one of those. Just because a doctor SAYS that nothing is wrong with her doesn't mean there isn't, he may just not be specialized in it.

Another idea though it sounds strange is to take her to a chiropractor. Kids spines get out of alignment just like adults and nerves can be pinched that control bodily functions like bladder control. My chiropractor adjusted my son's lower back and we haven't had an accident since. My chiropractor told me that many kids go to him and he has had great success with it... its worth a try.
