Hi Moms! My husband is considering a job in Terre Haute. We have 5 kids, ages 7 months up to 10 years. Can you tell me ANYTHING about the town, schools, safety, shopping, kids events, etc. I would love some more info - I know NOTHING about Indiana or Terre Haute. Many thanks!!

What can I do next?

I used to live about 25 minutes east of Terre Haute and it is where we would go for shopping and entertainment. There is a small mall, Kohls, Walmart and stuff like that and they have most restaurants that you would expect in a small city. It is also a college town (Indiana State and Rose Hulman) so there is a certain culture you get with that. It is a pretty easy town to drive in and figure out. As with any town its size, there are good places to live and kind of rough places to live. I don't really know any specifics about the schools except to say that it is a county wide school corporation so the two Terre Haute high schools are pretty large. Good luck. We enjoyed our time living in Indiana and were pleasantly surprised by the cost of living (housing.)

Whoever's making it from Indy to Terre Haute in 1 hour is my kind of driver. From where I live in the Indianapolis area, it's closer to 2.

Terre Haute used to be a vacation spot for a lot of the Chicago Mobsters (early 20th century) and was home to Clabber Girl Baking Powder.

It's a nice town, easy to access St. Louis, Chicago, and Indianapolis. It has a bad reputation, but it's not a bad town. They've done a good job of hiring a bunch of progressive and well-trained physicians at 2 large hospitals.

I moved to Indiana for college (Indiana University) from the Washington, DC area and haven't left in almost 15 years. Indiana is like a black whole and will suck you in, but it's been a nice place to begin and raise a family.

I have family in Terre Haute, and while I don't know a whole lot about it, I can say that it is a very friendly little town. The people are warm and helpful. The town itself could be compared maybe to Delaware or Marysville, small with a good family vibe. And it's only an hour away from Indianapolis when you want to get back to the big city! Good luck!

Terre Haute is a very small but friendly town. Not much shopping. They do have a Wal-Mart, but no Meijers. It could almost be considered a college town, Indiana State and Rose Hulman college are there so during the school year it can be pretty busy, but during the summer it is like a ghost town. Indianapolis is only an hour away, so if you wanted to come to the city on the weekends, it wouldn't be that far. Good luck, I hope it all works out for you.

My daughter goes to school at ISU. One thing I do know, the trains run at all hours, no schedule, so if you're late somewhere, you can always blame it on the trains, and no one questions it. I live on the westside of Indianapolis, West of Speedway, and it takes us 1 1/2 hrs. to get to TH.
