My 9 day old niece went to the ER last night and was diagnosed with RSV. They sent her home with instructions on how to monitor her. Her mom can't sleep at all she is so worried and I don't blame her! She is spitting up all of her breast milk and we are worried she is not getting enough to eat. I thought it was strange that they sent her home at all considering that she is so young. Do you have any experience with a newborn with RSV, I would appreciate hearing about it? We are also looking for a GOOD pediatrician that accepts Medicaid in the Downtown/Lakewood/Dallas area.
Hi everyone! Thank you for all your information. Yes, you were right to be worried as was I. The baby was admitted into the hospital shortly after I posted this. She was there until New Years Day. She even spent a couple of nights in the ICU. This was very serious and she is now at home with mom recovering. She got sick very fast and after the 3rd trip to the emergency room she was still admitted. Again...thank you for everyone's prompt response!
Contact Childrens Hospital - they accept Medicaid and can help out with RSV. RSV is very serious and Childrens has a clinic as well as a study right now the niece may qualify for. Don't wait.
My son was a premie and he spent 7 1/2 weeks in the hospital. He has to have an RSV shot 1 time a month. The best peditrician office I can recommend is the Tiny Tots Clinic. They accept medicaid and they specialize in premies that have graduated from the NICU and the doctors and nurses are Neonatal ICU doctors and nurses. Here is their information:

I believe it your niece has RSV she should be looked at again and ask about Synagis...hope this helps
My baby last year got RSV at @ 4 mos old and they admitted to the hospital. What insurance does she have? Tell her to go to Medical City Dallas Childrens Hospital or Childrens Medical Center. MCD is the best!

My pediatrician is Dr Salamon in Plano. I think he does take medicare. He always leans toward the really safe side which is maddening to some, but I feel that you can't take chances with little ones!!!!! Hey, really and truely, that RSV is really dangerous and can go from bad to worse in just minutes. I would get that baby to the pediatrician immediatly. Maybe last night he wasn't doing too badly, but I know my daugter hit a slippery slope about 3 days into the hospital stay. Thank God we were in the hospital!!!!!! Taking care of that baby alone is too much for his mom to do alone.

I am sorry to hear about your niece. I am really shocked that they did not hospitalize her with her being that young. I am not just real familiar with RSV, but I have heard of it. I would maybe suggest calling around to different doctors and see if she could possibly get her in today to see someone for a check up and for them to keep a close watch on her. I am in Irving and have used Dr. Thomas Murphy for our pediatric needs. He is older, but a great doctor!! Sometimes he goes overboard, if you know what I mean, but better to know the worst, than to not know. He always called personally to check on my daughter when she was really ill. His number is ###-###-####. He is great! He probably takes Medicade. He was always helpful if you did not have the money right then. He always billed us and always met us at night or anytime, if he felt it was urgent. I know Irving is a bit away, but it is worth the drive in my opinion, if you can get in. My son just got over RSV. Granted he is 10 months old but he was still really sick. He was a preemie so his lungs are very weak to begin with. I would definitely take him to Medical City. They have a special pediatric emergency room and the staff is great. We took my son twice a couple weeks ago because of the RSV. We were sent home both times we went but they were able to hydrate him and get his oxygen levels up and he was able to hold down food by the time we left. I agree with the other mom who said day 3 was the worst. It does get worse before it gets better but it definitely gets better. Do they have him on breathing treatments? We were giving my son breathing treatments every 4 hours and those seemed to help keep his lungs more clear. I am surprised they didn't admit him since he is so young. I would say take him back to the hospital and be adamant (sp?) about admitting him. I had to fight to get them to even do the RSV test but they did it.
My son had RSV at 10 months old. They did not hospitalize him. We had to keep him in for 10 days and instead of formula they had him on Pedialyte for the full 10 days. It was a nightmare working out our work schedules but we managed to keep him at home and of course we were the only ones around him. They had given us strict instructions to take him to the ER if his condition worsened.
Granted my son was 10 months and my husband were fine with keeping him in and away from other people, but I think that if my son had been 9 days old I would have demanded that he be hospitalized. I would take her to either Medical City or Children's Medical Center.
Please get a second opinion. RSV can be deadly for the little ones. And 9 days is very very little. My son got it when he was 6 months, he was realy sick, but wasn't hospitalized. But the doctor said it was a very serious thing, don't under estimate it. Maybe there's a light and a heavy variation?

I also live in Lakewood. Baylor has a clinic called tiny tots. Its for babies that were in NICU for long periods as well as outpatient babies. They do take medicade and are wonderful!! My twins were soooo sick when they were babies... we were there almost everyday, and we never had to wait long and they were just wonderful in every way.
