Insurance Claim?

My son's dog got into an extra cell phone battery this morning while I was sleeping. (Son was working) )She chewed on it and almost caused a fire. The battery is expanded and charred and melted. That is bad enough but it charred and melted the fabric on the entire top of the center cushion of my couch! My question is can or should I turn it in to my house insurance? I'm not sure if it is a covered type of damage? Oh, she also tore up a coach wristlet that the battery was in and the back cover to my smart phone. The couch was in perfect condition and it is a sleeper too. It would not be cheap to replace!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called my agent. He has been in the business 33 years. He was not sure! He thinks it will be covered. We have a $500 deductible. The sofa sleeper matches the swivel rocker recliner so I imagine we would need to replace it too? I am sure it will be a great deal more than the deductible.so it will be worth it.

Yes it is covered but you would be nuts to claim it. First I can't imagine it is much more than your deductible. The second is it is a claim and most homeowners insurance policies have a two strikes in three years you are out policy. In other words if you have a real claim in the next few years you will be looking for new insurance. I wouldn't advise it.

So I will tell you a story. My ex sister in law kept losing the diamonds in her wedding ring. Not the big one mind you so she claimed it because the diamond was around $300 more than her deductible. Then her husband dropped his wedding ring in the trash and was too lazy to fish it out. Another $300 over the deductible. Then their house was robbed,......guess what? Insurance is for big things and as others have said they don't usually care that things match. So I guess I would still not advise you claiming it.

call your local agent. it depends on what type of policy you have. also, you have a deductible to meet. so, even if it is covered, it may be less than your deductible. Be careful who you call and what you say. When you call 1-800 numbers, they automatically file a claim for you whether it malkes sense or not. So, call your local office and ask for advice. If you dont have a local office, then call the 1-800 number but dont give them your name or policy number. Just ask a hypothetical question about coverage. Dont give them your info until you know you want to file the claim. You have to be careful because claim frequency can cause yourrates to go up or even to be dropped, so you have to be careful that a claim isnt filed on your behalf when all you wanted was advice.

If you have a low to no deductible then file it...if not - it's not worth it...

Most batteries are less than $40 and most home owners deductibles are $200 if not $500...

In regards to the couch - is it new? Or just a few years? I would call my insurance company and find out how they would handle it - you do not have to file a claim to get information....

GOOD LUCK!!!

Well depends on how much all this stuff is worth and if indeed the amount is more than what your deductible is......also when you file a claim you know that rates are determined by how many claims you yourself have put in as well as your neighbors....or at least that's what I was told at one time.
Honestly I would take it as a loss. Unfortunately this is what happens sometimes when you have pets. The cell phone most carriers offer an insurance plan on that and I always always take it because it never fails-something happens to the phone-Ive learned on that one. As far as the couch you could try to replace the cover through the manufactorer if they are still in business. Sometimes you can buy additional insurance on that as well-check and see or if all else fails check into how much a replacement cushion would cost or call the manufactorer to see if they have any fabric to sell you and take to an upholsterer to re-do the cushion or if you are crafty enough do it yourself ;())

Your homeowners insurance should cover it. It was an accident in your home. For your sofa, you might be able to contact the manufacturer to get a replacement cushion and cushion cover. As long as the fabric is still available. Otherwise you could get it recovered or replaced. Your homeowners should cover it...less your deductable. Call your insurance agent...that's what he/she is there for. I am surprised your dog is ok.

How much is your deductible, and would you be willing for your premium to go up because you have a claim?

They will more than likely cover the couch, either to replace or maybe just to recover, but they more than likely will not cover the rocker, because wanting things to match is not really covered by insurance. Just try to find a couch that goes with the color or pattern them in the rocker.

Honestly, you'd need to call your insurance company to find out for sure if something like this would be covered. My feeling is no, but you can't be sure until you call.

What has your son said? I'd hope he'd be willing to pay for the damage, considering that it's his dog that caused it.

Don't forget that you have to take into consideration that your insurance rates WILL go up. Take that into account when you figure the price.

Now, personally, if your son is old enough, I'd make him pay to have it fixed and next time the dog will have to be confined to one room that is "doggy proofed" or put in a crate. Dogs will be dogs and if you leave the dog alone there is a good chance of this happening again in the future!

I would submit the claim to your son.
I guess it really depends on what your deductible is. Ours is $1000. That wouldnt be worth it to me. Even if it was over $1000 in damage, it wouldnt be worth it because your rates are going to go up. The only way you would know if it is covered is by calling your insurance agent. They will always come out and do a free assesment.
