Hi Moms,
I was wondering if any of you have some good ideas for my daughter's 6th birthday party. Her birthday is in early October and we want to invite everyone in her first grade class so that no one feels left out - so that could be 20 something kids? We have been to parties at Chuck-E-Chesses(which I like to call "Hell in a Building"), the bowling alley and a sports/play place with bounce houses, all great but maybe something, different? Seasonal? Any ideas?

Thanks guys! I will definitely look into the whole farm/hayride/apple, pumpkin picking thing! That sounds like it could be fun - I think I might have to do the goodie bags though, because I know Caroline will want them. Thanks for your help!! GO MAMASOURCE! E.

If you celebrate Halloween you could have a costume party and go trick - or- treating? You just may need a few more adults to help supervise...
Good Luck!

You said October right? How about a Halloween/costume party? That could be fun. You could do all the Halloween things...bob for apples, costume contest, cool ckae or cupcake decorations. Decorating for the party would be easy too since it will be in season. Good luck.

A pretend sleep over. I did this for my son when he turned 5 and again when he turned 6. The kids all came to my house with their PJ's sleeping bag and stuffed animal. We played games and after the cake I had all the kids in my family room in their sleeping bags watching my son open the gifts. As for goodie bags I burned a cd of fun kid music. It was a blast.

my daughters b day is in oct too. We did one year in early Oct. or late Sept. a hay ride in the Watchung Reservation in NJ... it was a lot of fun.. some farms do this too. and the cost was minimal.. like 5 or 6 a kid. This past year we did a spooky hay ride in the same place. Check out hay rides or night time hay rides.. they are alot of fun. don't go to spooky as they are still small.. my daughter's friends were 9 and some were scared.. but afterwards they said it was a lot of fun... it's not to scarey.. and they have hot cocoa afterwards and a bon fire.. it's great.. check out Union County's website if you are near here to see what watchung has going on.. also when we went - we took 18 kids.. and they will only sell you 15 tickets so I took someone else with me to buy the other tickets I needed for some adults and a few more kids.. it worked out perfect.. i also had for every 5 kids one parent. good luck

Hello!
I just wanted to share my experience with you. My daughter is a January baby so I always have trouble finding new places/ideas for her birthdays since we are always stuck inside.
We have done so far a swimming party. A local hotel has an indoor pool. I rented a room for one day on ground floor and asked the manager if it was ok if we had a pool party and he was fine with it as long as the kids were surpervised and we cleaned up. So we themed it as a Hawaiian party with bathing suits and grass skirts. That was a fun time and we had no time limit.
Another thing we did was at our local Chuck-E-Cheese. I know you have had a bad experience but I've learned some tips and tricks to make it better. Try a week night. Around 5:30-6:00pm. They usually give you a discount and its SO quite at that time. We usually have the place to ourselves. Or if you have to do the weekend, pick the very first party of the day or the last party of the night. Its usually pretty quiet then.
This year we are planning on a skating party. Our local ice skating rink lets you rent out there room and gives the kids an hour of skate time with skates.
Hope that helps some! Let us know what you came up with!

My neice has a fall birthday. One year they painted pumpkins for her birthday party. I think they rented a pavillion at a park. You could also see if there are any farms that have mazes, pumpkin patches, etc. Good luck!

Hi E.,
My daughter also has an early October b-day:) Last year we had her fourth b-day party (with 30 guests) at the Beardsley zoo in Bridgeport. There are a couple of different packages to choose from, and when the party is over all your party guests can tour the zoo (as this is not part of the party...but admission to the zoo is included in your package price) All the kids had a gr8 time!!! The party takes place in the carousel building. You can find out more at www.beardsleyzoo.org.

Good luck!

My son's b-day is in may, so it's on the cusp of good weather. Since you never know if it's going to be cool, warm, or rain... i have to do indoors. This year I did a pool party at our local YMCA. They have an indoor pool, and a party room for you to use. A few people at the party who had winter children's birthday's were saying they wanted to do it for their kids b/c it's kind of like a break from winter... a winter time luau of sorts.

Good luck!

how about some oldtime favorites. get a couple of blind folds and make a pin the ??? on the ??? game, could be pin the tail on the donkey, make it the donkey off of shrek, or whatever your childs favorite character is. get a post and then just make a copy of a tail for the donkey, i think he is just called donkey, of it is cars, maters lights or mcqueens tire, or even a picture of your child and have them pin on her nose or pigtail or use your imagination, but a take off from this would be neat, and we hired a clown and the clown did balloon artistry and magic for the kids. they had a ball. her birthday also in october, I made a brownie cake, put in chocolate chips and pudding before baking, then when it was time for cake, we had them make an line and birthday girl got the first piece, but they got a brownie, a scoop of icecream on the top and then whipped cream, chocolate syrup and a cherry on top, (on paper with plastic silver, paper cup) and a drink, and out the sliding door they went. when they were done we put the dishes in the garbage, and believe me a little of this dessert goes a long way. they did not ask for seconds and were thrilled with what they got. you could even put mini m&m's in the brownies and on the topping. if anything got dropped outside, i did not loose my good dishes or silver and after the party my daughter and i walked around the yard and picked up any thing that got dropped because plastic silver does not fall down into the grass. easy to find and pick up.

she loved it and we got pictures of the fun.

good luck

Hi E.,

We did a big 6th b-day party for my daughter this past March. She invited her whole class plus some of her other friends. We had over 35 kids. We rented rooms at Victor Parks & Rec (I don't know if your local or you may have something similar in your area) The rooms were big and they had tables & chairs for us to use. We also used their big parachute & did lots of parachute games. The kids loved them & it kept them happy for quite a while. (your school gym teacher may also be willing to let you borrow a chute)
Then we did some games and relay races. Then cupcakes & ice cream cups. We also had snacks available.

My biggest suggestions:
Have activities planned to keep them busy the whole time.

Pick a theme & you will find the ideas come faster. (My daughter had an animal theme this year. We did animal decorations & games. I put different animal print ribbon on safety pins so when each kid arrived they picked a ribbon. Then they were in the giraffe group or zebra group etc. It made it very easy to separate into teams for the games & relay races. I also noticed that the kids wore the ribbons to school for days afterwards.)

Enlist some helpers- older siblings, cousins, neighbors. Also ask the parents that stay for parties instead of just dropping off the kids. They usually would love to help

Do cupcakes & ice cream cups so you don't have to spend time serving.

Do face painting. The kids love it. You can even set up mirrors & they can do their own. I know of a great product if you want.

Think about the presents! My dtr's only complaint was that she had 30 kids shoving presents in her face saying "open my next". We debated saying no presents, but I know I like to give presents & would feel funny going to a party without a present. We waited until the party was over & parents were picking up the kids to start opening, but it got crazy quickly. I would suggest waiting until everyone leaves to open presents in an orderly fashion. Or doing a bring a donation to the food bank or children's hospital or something instead of presents.

October has so many wonderful outdoor things but the weather can be a risk. Rent a pavillion at a park & you may be ok with any weather. You can do mazes & scarecrow making. Deorate pumpkins, make leaf cut outs. You can do activities in stations & have small groups rotate or do large group games.

Contact me if you want to brainstorm.
Best of luck! It will be so much fun!

Get in touch with your local pumpkin/harvest farms. They may be able to work something out with you. You may have to do the party on a Friday or Sunday evening, but you could probably get a group rate (like a school trip) to pick pumpkins, apples, corn and a hayride. You could serve cider and cake and no need for "goodie bags". Get some cool canvas totes and they can take home their harvest! Don't forget that there are usually a bunch of days "off" from school in October, so you could plan something then!

Hi E.,

Last year my sister in law had a pony party for her 4 year old. The people they hired brought 2 ponies, a baby goat, baby sheep and baby chicks. The kids had a great time taking turns going for a walk on the pony or just petting and feeding hay to the other animals. It was a lot of fun. The kids all got cowgirl hats and pink scarfs. It was a regular cowgirl party. Hope this helps.

Perhaps a birthday party at a local children's museum or rollerskating rink. I know the children in my family have enjoyed parties at these too off the beaten trail.

Montclair and Newark Museum both have wonderful child focused exhibits and the facilities you would need to host a marvelous event for your 6 year old.

Hope this idea was good for you.

If you have a big enough yard why not do pumpkin picking (i'm sure that if u have any farms nearby they sell the small pumpkins cheap) & then just get a ton of washable markers for them to decorate their pumpkins while they are there. Maybe make a few scarecrows, buy a few bundles of hay & serve apple juice (don't like doing the apple cider b/c it's not always pasturized) w/cake.

It would be simple & trust me.........w/the whole class attending - u r going to want simple. You could also have the children collect dried up leaves & color over them as another craft to keep them busy. My girls have feb & nov b-days which absolutely stinks b/c there really isn't too much to do w/theirs but i hope u have a great time w/this - u could even have ur daughter make leaf decorations - this way u cover the crafts & favor all one shot - well, have fun!

HI,
I just had a party for my 4-year-old, and we got a tye-dye kit from Walmart for $7 that did 16 projects. Now, the parents did stay, and the kids played party games while they came to the dye station one by one. We bought packs of boys undershirts for under $1 per shirt. Then we made pudding parfaits -- everybody brought their favorite sundae topping and we layered them into the pudding.

THe t-shirts are nice because everybody takes theirs home still wet but they all wear them to school annd remember the party while being proud of their own creativity.

Not sure where you live, but you're in the perfect season for apple & pumpkin picking - but you'll need an adult for each child or pair of children to keep them safe. There are some very child-friendly farms in the hudson valley, nj, and long island.

How about a fall themed scavenger hunt. My sister just did a scavenger hunt for her son's 10th b-day and it was a huge success. She made a list of things that the kids needed to find and gave each item a value point. She broke the kids up into teams. She had t-shirts made up for all the kids as well which were also there party favor.

E., I do have a two suggestions. When my son turned 7yrs I had a birthday party at one of our local zoos, it was great the kids got to walk around first than my son had a choice of an animal, they supplied a craft, pizza and a cake. All his friends couldn't stop talking about it. The other suggestion was a golf party. It was at a miniture golf place in my area they supplied hot dogs & hamburgers and the kids also had a great time. If not how about a theme party kids love to get dressed up. I hope this helped alittle. My son is now in highschool going to be 15yrs. in August. A friend P. from Bayonne N.J.

What about a swimming party. We have schools with pools that let you have parties at them.
Or even a magician party. Kids that age love magic. Mine did at least. Heck still do. Also have at a park with playground. Just ask parents to stay and help. Then you get some adult communication too and meet parents of the other kids.
Hope that helps.
