Internet Options? - Cleveland,TN

We are likely going to drop our cable service, but NEED to keep Internet. (I have a couple online classes this semester....)

Does anyone know of a good, fairly cheap wireless Internet provider that is reliable? If we keep JUST the Internet through our current provider, it will be $54 + rental for the modem... I'm hoping to cut that down if possible.

What can I do next?

If we HAD the option of cable or fios for internet - we'd take it - even if we never bundled it with anything else.
But nothing like that comes down our street.
Our options are dial up (not really an option at all), Hughesnet (had them for 6 years at about $100 a month and it was awful) and now we're using Verizon Home Fusion at $59 a month (might have to go to $99 a month if we nudge up against the data limit too much which is pretty easy to do)- which still isn't perfect but at least we still have access no matter if it's raining or not.
We've never been able to do Netflix or any sort of streaming or certain games.
Drop the tv part of cable but really really look at all the options available to you in your area before taking your internet off cable.

does your cell phone provider offer "hotspot" conversion? You can basically turn your cell phone into a hotspot and connect wirelessly through your laptop off of that. usually that's like 20 per month.

$54 is what I pay, but we bought the modem so I don't have that fee.

I've not seen it much less than that... just for internet, unless you go with satellite or old school "dial-up". If you are wanting broadband or cable - that's not a bad price.

Your classes that are online? Are they "streaming" - meaning it's a live class that you are viewing and listening online? You will NEED cable or broadband for that. Anything less and you'll get spotty delays.

However, if you can take the class whenever you want... the library usually has free internet, you can go there and take the class?

Costs and services vary a lot by area, so I can't help you with that.

I can offer this - never rent a modem. Such a waste of money when you can buy one outright. Also get a wireless router or modem/router combo, then you have wifi without the extra cost for the 'service' that some companies trick people into paying.

For internet only we have WOW! cable + internet service and pay 30/month. Now it's a tad more because we rent a wireless modem (could buy our own but chose not to) and we got it on a certain special but have NO issues with it at all.

I think $50 is normal, until about a year or so ago we had to go with Wildblue, satellite internet and we were always going over our allowed usage and we weren't doing anything. No YouTube, no Netflix just basic surfing and it cost us over $100 a month. We even paid to terminate our contract early it was so bad. Now I have unlimited, and at over half the price. I do not complain lol

I suggest that you consider finding someplace like McDonald's or Burger King that has free wifi. If you can't get DSL or something like that then you're going to have to find it free from a business.

See if you can get Clear where you are. It's a portable wifi device.
