Introducing Whole Milk

My son is 11 months old and my doctor said that I had to wait until he was 12 months to introduce whole milk. I have started adding just 2 oz whole milk to 6 oz formula and I notice that he spits up what looks like cottage cheese. (it's quite gross) Has anyone had this problem before? I was wondering if I should use soy milk.

What can I do next?

My daughter had a similar reaction. She is lactose intolerant & ended up being allergic to soy. Interestingly enough soy is tolerated equally bad. Rice and goat's milk were suggested. We were able to use Lactose free milk and it worked out great. Try it!

I started introducing my son to whole milk at around 10 mos. My son just got to where he was turning up his nose at formula. Are you using powdered formula? If so, that could be causing some curdling. I would think that if he had a dairy allergy, it would have manifested itself if you were giving him milk-based formula. If you are not using it already, you might try the concentrated formula or ready-to-use formula with milk and see if that works out better. Those formulas are generally more expensive, but the cost evens out as you combine it with milk. Good luck!

why are you not waiting until 12 months?

I hit send too soon before! Sorry :)

I was just wondering if you had a reason for pushing forward. Not that there is anything wrong with it.

My little guy had to wait for whole milk until he was around 18 months for that very reason. His little tummy just couldn't handle it. I was tired of mixing formula, but we had to keep him on it for a little longer. I tried mixing in milk occasionally and finally he was able to handle it. I did however give him cheese and yogurt while we were waiting, the pediatrician recommended that and it was fine. I never really understood that part but anyway, I hope this helps.

Hello D. before you introduce your son to whole milk you must take one day and only give him water or juice during the whole morning and afternoon so that his system can clear up.Then at night time give him a bottle of milk. Once this is done he should not spit it up.I did this with both my children and they were perfectly fine. Good Luck...

Hi Anna,
I am mother of 6 boys, breastfed them for 6 month only, then introduced formula: my experience: as little dairy products as possible! It produces so much mucus (all mucus tissues, ie. intestines, nose etc.) that it is very bad! Read up on www.thewolfeclinic.com
Soy is better, be a little careful with alergies, choose a reliable source. For calcium: when he is a bit older: sesame seeds in everything!
Good luck with your lovely boy! A.

There is no magical age where babies are ready to tolerate milk. My son wasn't ready until he was nearly 14 months old.

I used a milk-based formula (Similac) and when I started adding milk, it was only a half-ounce at a time. I also gave him other milk-based products before trying milk - Yobaby yogurt and cubes of cheddar cheese (he had all of his teeth by 9 months). Once I introduced milk, I added it at a very slow pace because my son's stomach is easily upset. I added the 1/2 ounce then waited 5-7 days to see how he was really handling it before I added another 1/2 ounce. After he was drinking 4oz of milk mixed with 2-4oz of formula, I pushed it to increasing by a full ounce.

Doctors reccomend waiting until a baby is at least 12 months before introducing cow's milk because their digestive systems are still developing and pushing it on them too early can sometimes lead to lactose intolerance - even in babies drinking a milk-based formula. I did not use Soy with my son since he has no problems with the milk so I can't offer an opinion on that. I'd suggest waiting until your son is over a year old, then trying again with a very small amount of milk and see how that goes.

I had to see a specialist b/c all three of my children had reflux. They all started whole milk at about nine months. The specialist said that they would be able to tolerate milk at that age b/c that is when the digestive system is fully mature. I agree with what some of these woman are saying that maybe you should just try going straight to whole milk. That is what I did with my son and daughter and they did fine. When they spit up it is normal for it to look like cottage cheese or curdled milk. At least that is what mine looked like and they really love milk and dairy products. Hope this helps.

I used soy for my daughter to ween her off the breast because nothing else worked. However, boys should not stay on soy for a prolonged period of time because it can interfere with their pubecent development (this was told to my sister by her pediatrician about her son some years before he started puberty). You could try rice milk too. It is possible for him to have milk allergies or it may make his stomach sour. I don't think it is good for humans to drink cows milk much any. That's just my opinion. There are other ways to get him the daily recommended calcium intake.

I would make soy my last possibly option, as the soy that is generally on the market is genetically engineered and QUITE strong and potent stuff. There is a ton of research about how potent it is. Anyway, I would wait until he is a full year to introduce milk; his system is probably not quite ready. And, when you try again, do not give it to him straight, but mix it in with his formula.

Good luck!

It's perfectly acceptable to go ahead and try it now. Maybe try him on some whole milk products separately before switching his formula. Maybe whole milk yogurt or cottage cheese. If he doesn't tolerate it, wait a week before trying again. If he after several tries and he doesn't tolerate it, go with the soy.

Personally, I would keep him on the formula longer if he is doing well. He may not be quite ready.

At least with the soy milk you won't have to worry about added hormones and antibiotics! Seems like a no brainer to me....

you could do a few different things, go ahead and wait until he's a year old then try again. Perhaps just try adding 1oz of milk to his formula and see how that goes. You could go ahead and try the soy, add it to his formula 1 or 2 ounces at a time and see how he tolerates that. They do have formulas out there for children over 1 year of age, I think it is 9-24 months. You could try that and just wait a bit longer before switching him to whole milk...there's nothing wrong with that. Do what is best for your child and what you feel most comfortable with.

best of luck

Do you think it could be the mixture of the two? He might do better with just straight whole milk. My daughter started whole milk about 2 weeks before her 1st birthday and did just fine. I think 12 months is just kind of the "rule of thumb". However, if you think he might be allergic I would give the soy milk a try too.
