Ipod Touch - 16 or 32 GB?

My soon to be 11 year old son has been wanting an Ipod Touch for a couple of years. My husband and I are going to surprise him with one for his birthday. Money is an issue for us, but Apple has a refurbished 4th generation 16 GB for a great price. The 32 GB one is also a good deal but does he really need that much storage? We want him to be able to use it for a while. Budget is important to us but we don't want him to outgrow it either. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

You will be fine with the 16 GB unless he will be storing movies. Even one movie will eat a lot of his storage, so if he will be doing that, get the 32 GB.

With electronics, always get the biggest one you can afford .... So if you can afford the deal on the 32 GB, get that one. It will last longer and if he decides he wants a movie (age appropriate and mom-approved, of course), it'll for sure "fit" on his iPod.

Our rule of thumb is to always purchase the best quality with the most storage you can afford at the time.

As with all electronics, they are upgraded often and changed for the better, etc. That said, we would not buy something that was too small from the get go.

If budget permits, go for the larger storage which can be used for a longer period of time, etc.

Always remember that you get what you pay for. Nice surprise for your son!! I am sure he'll appreciate either one.

Guess it depends on the price difference. I would go with the 32.

How funny, we JUST bought a refurbished 16GB a few weeks ago. We really like ti so far, and 16GB seems like it's plenty for us. I have many apps for myself, husband, and son. We also have enough music to literally listen for 3 days straight and never repeat a song. We still have over half the space left to use.

My phone is a 16g, and it's ok for me. However, my boys (ages 8 and 6) both have 32g ipod touches and they definitely use it. They both have around 22-24g occupied. But they also have 8-10 movies on it, lots of music, tons of high graphic games. They also take a ton of pictures and videos. It all depends on what it's used for. Movies/Video is really what consumes the storage space the fastest. So, if he's not planning on using it to watch a lot of movies, you can get away pretty easily with the 16g.

My 11 year old only has 8GB, and it is OK. He has had to delete some apps, but they are still there "in the cloud".

The 16 GB is plenty for him. When they first came out, I had a 16 and had all my music, a bunch of games, and a couple of shows. I never ran out of room. If I had, it's really easy to delete it and download it from the cloud later.

Both of my boys have the 16gb. It's been plenty. They're 10 and 12 years old.

Even if they have to take a HUGE game off to put another on, you still own the game and can download it from the cloud again anytime.
