Is He Teething or Getting Sick

My 7 month old son has had diarrea about 5 or 6 times a day for the last 4 or 5 days. He woke up in the middle of the night Friday night with a temp of 103. Throughout the day on Saturday it went down and when we woke up this morning, he had no temp. He has been on antibiotics for something entirely different since the 15th (so he's been on it for about 10 days). I know that antibiotics can cause diarrea, but does it take that long to cause it? I thought that it would cause it within a couple of days. I not sure if he is teething or getting sick or just having side effects from the medicine. Any suggestions before I call the dr tomorrow?

What can I do next?

When my son first started cutting teeth he got high fevers, I'm talking 104!!! The doctors found no infection and that is what it was attributed too. So, I know now that when he is teething he is prone to high fevers. I just ride out the fever and he is fine. He is now 16 months getting more teeth in; however, he seems to havee grown out of the whole fever and loose stools associated with his early teething experiences.

i have been telling my husband that our 7 month old has been teethig for about a month. still no teeth coming thru. but she is fussy and not sleeping thru the night and spitting up more. she has had a fever off and on and we are seeing a pediatriican on monday. diarrhea is also an issue. i think these little guys just go thru so much when they are starting to teethe. they say that you and i would be in the e.r. if we had to break a toothe thru so just be patient and give them a rubber something to chew on. i know it sounds weird but any sort of rubber strap will keep him busy for hours cause it feels so good. might start a patent and color them pink and blue. make a mint. good luck

There's a nasty virus going around now. My daughter was sick for eight days, and diarrhea was the worst part. Call your doctor.

My oldest daughter experience something similar this summer. She woke up in the middle of the night coverd in diarrea and had a fever. She had watery diarrea so bad I could hardly keep up with the diaper changing and cleaning the clothes, sheets etc. She was also vomiting and had a fever that come and went. I took her to the doc and it turned out she had the rotavirus. It lasted about 8 days and unfortunatley there's nothing you can do about it, you just have to wait it out. I was told to give her bananace, rice, applesauce, toast and pedialyte. She was very moody and slept alot during this period. Hope your little ones is better soon and that's it's nothing serious!

I would call your ped, but my oldest always ran a high fever for a day or two and had the runs before she cut a tooth. Typically one would pop about one to four days from fever.

I agree with those who have said to give him probiotics. It will help replace the good bacteria that the antibiotics killed off that is probably causing diarrea. Even if he had no diarrea it is important to follow up with probiotcs after taking antibiotics. They have probiotics for babies at WholeFoods and probably Fruitful Yeild. I've noticed Fruitful Yeild usually has better prices.

The stomach flu is going around so I've heard. 7 months is around the time babies get teeth but teething doesn't give a fever so high. I would say possibly some kind of virus. Does he have any other symptoms (congestion?). Does he have less diaper changes?

My favorite website to look up information is

Hope he is doing better soon.

I would definitely call the Dr. right away. This may help too. We're giving our son probiotics, which contain live strains of acidopholus and strains of the cultures present in yogurt. Antibiotics can change the intestinal flora by killing good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are supposed to replace the good strains. My son has been on antibiotics a lot for ear infections. The probiotics have been so effective against the diarhea that we jokingly call it magic powder at our house. We bought ours at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section of the supplements area. I can't remember the brand but it comes in a wide mouth plastic jar and has a bright yellow lid. We chose that one because it had 6 the highest number of different strains. I was surprised when our very conservative and mainstream pediatrician suggested that we buy some. It was fun telling her that we were way ahead of her on this one. The powder is used by dissolving it in liquid and drinking it. Best of luck I hope your son gets better fast.

Use the BRAT diet - bananna, rice, apple sauce and toast and keep pushing liquids. No milk/ dairy (cheese). Also try probiotics to help to get the good bateria back into her system. It sounds like there is a virus present and you will just need to ride it out.
