I do think you are worrying. Newborns make plenty of weird looking bms because their systems are so young.
Hi K., Congrats on your new bundle of joy! As I began reading you post I thought - "Oh, she's breastfeeding." Then, I got to the point where you said "he is breast fed" - yes nothing to worry about. In the beginning you were seeing the colostrum poo, colostrum is FULL of good vitamins and other stuff for baby. I am assuming that is why is is dark and gooey, much like if you and I were to take iron pills. Once your regular milk has come in you will see loose - to diarrhea like consistency from then on. And you will see funky colors as well - (like mustard yellow for instance.) The good news is breast milk poo doesn't smell like formula poo, but it is messier.
Relax, it sounds like the nurses are right, but you are ALWAYS right to check. If for no other reason than to have one less thing to worry about. : )
Totally normal!
Congratulations on your new little one, and great job breast feeding him - that is the best gift you can give your child.
Here's a link to Jay Gordon's website - this page has a rundown on the kind of poop you can expect and what's normal:
http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/pediatricks/poop.asp
Rather than call you names, the nurses should have given you detailed info - I would put in a call to the hospital to complain about this.
To those confused by the due date - it was my assumption that she filled out her personal info when she was pregnant, had the baby early, and hasn't changed her profile info.
Sounds normal to me. Everyone else explained it really well, the beginning poop is the mechnoium ,(don't know how to spell that!) and then rest is normal.
My son's birthday is March 2nd, great day!!
They are all different with how many bowel movements they have. Breastfed babies should have a mustard color watery poop. If it's green, that can be an indicator that there is a food allergy/sensitivity....something you are eating is bothering him. I take PB8 every day and ours kids bowels have always been really easy.
K., I would say his pooping is normal. I am the mother of 4 children, I breastfed all of them. They all had poopy diapers that was yellow and seedy most of the time, when they were newborns and then it changes with your diet, the colors and sometimes the odor. I think he is normal, but if your not sure, then by all means check with your baby's ped, they know best!
Good Luck! and I think you are fine for worrying!
M.
PS. FOr the other mother's that didn't understand your post: She was DUE March 2nd and had her baby early, FEB 25th.
Totally normal! Congratulations!!! Enjoy this time with your baby and don't worry so much :)
It does sound pretty normal to me. Since you are breastfeeding, what you eat will affect his poop. The sounds are normal too.
if you're breastfeeding this is completely normal. my son pooped each time he ate until at least 2 months old. sooo many diapers! it just means he has a healthy system. if you're formula feeding, he will probably slow down now that the meconium (green stuff) is out of his system. the sound is trademark of new baby poo, don't stress. just enjoy him!
Sounds normal to me. My son was breastfed too. His poop was green for a few days. Then it turned into the mustard yellow stuff. It's great that it doesn't stink though. :)
Good Morning K.,
I have 5 children ranging from 25 years old to 9 years old and two grandchildren 4years old and 1 year old. To answer your question - Yes, your little boys poppy schedule sounds exactly how it should be. Don't worry and enjoy him - they grow so fast :)
K.
Totally normal! I've breastfed both my boys and there are days when I get tons of poopy diapers! Yellow and green are normal colors for breastfed babies! And...you should hear my 5 month old poop!

K.,
Breastfed babies tend to poop every time they eat (and sometimes in between). When they are a couple of months old they start to poop less often. It is a good thing, it gets their digestive system moving. My favorite breastfeeding friendly site is www.kellymom.com. There is info out there on lots of topics including pumping and storing milk, food intolerances and all sorts of things.
Bright green poop can signal that a baby is getting too much "foremilk" and this is common in the first weeks after you deliver until your milk supply evens out. If it goes on more than 3-4 weeks, check out the kellymom site and seach for "foremilk imbalance" and it will help you fix it.
Just in general, the only poop colors that are really bad are white (milk not digesting), red (blood), and black (digested blood). Every other color of the rainbow is fine.

How can you have a new baby born on Feb 25th and have a new one due March 2nd? I read it over and over and I still see the same thing! lol.
Good Morning K.,
Sounds like to me that your child may have food allergies. yes, many allergies you have coming right out of the womb!
Western Medicine does not give allergies the attention and importance that they should. I have severe allergies and have had them since birth. And my younger sister has allergies, and she as a baby had to be rushed to the hospital many times for allergy attacks, yes as an infant! Allergies are not something to take lightly, they can cause death.
I recommend that you log onto site NAET.com and locate and NAET allergist near your home, and have your child tested for allergies. NAET are the only allergists in the world who ELIMINATE allergies. And it is completely natural. I have been seeing an NAET allergist for a few months and my allergies ARE being eliminated and my physical problems that I had which were associated with allergies are disappearing. And just as an aside, my Western Medicince doctor told me that there was nothing wrong with me. I was experiencing so many physical problems, she ran all the normal tests and said everything was normal. I had her run them again, she said everything was normal. You have to go a little deeper and use your intuition. If something does not set well with you, keep looking, as I did. I found an NAET allergist and had him test me, he found all the problems that I knew I was having and explained why I was having the problems. After just a few months, I have lost 20 pounds, and I am able to do more now physically.
If you have any questions, I can answer them - ____@____.com, but I suggest that you just jump in the water of NAET. If you live in the Westchester area, you may want to see Sheri Weitz, R.D. zip code 90045, she does have experience working with children. And she is very good. If not, just type in your zip code on the NAET website and you will find NAET allergists in your area. To have the testing done, is nominal fee or free depending on the allergist. It certainly can't hurt to have the knowledge.
Also, you may want to go to Amazon.com and purchase the book Say Goodbye to Illness by Devi Nambudripad, Phd. she is the doctor who created NAET. And she is a major contribution to all of humanity.
Be well.

The good news about breastfed babies is that their pooh doesn't stink as much as formula fed or real food (when they turn 6-12 months). The bad news is that it is runny and darker the entire time. They do not get solid pooh until they start eating solids. Yes, this is normal, the nurses told me that everytime I breastfed, something goes in and something else comes out. This habit slows down over time, but I remember pooh diapers all day long for that first month, then it decreases to around 3, then once they get solids it will be hard pooh 0-3 times a day. My daughter is now like clockwork, once a day (sometimes 2 times), normally at the same time each day! If not I start to wonder what's up? And, as they get older, they won't ruin as many outfits since it's harder pooh and it doesn't run up their backs!!!!
Yes, his pooping is totally normal. As all the meconium (black tar stuff) gets out of his system he will have yellow runny poop that looks like it has seeds in it - this is breastfed baby poop! He will probably strain like it's hard to go, but then it comes out almost liquid - he's not constipated, it's just that this whole digesting and pooping things is all new to his body so it's a struggle to figure it all out! He will probably poop a zillion times a day for a few months (as long as he is exclusively breastfed) - cloth diapers seriously help keep cost down as you are changing so often! Don't worry about being a worry wart - haha - it comes with the territory of having a baby in the house :) Take a deep breath and enjoy
I'm surprised that no one told you what to expect with the bowel movements. And you have a 3 year old girl, don't you remember the first poops? I am also a little confused regarding you comments on "a little about me" You said your son was due on March 2nd. But, he was born on March 25th.
All sounds normal to me.
Good luck to you!
K.,
Your little guy's poops are totally normal. My son basically pooped after each feeding when he was that age.
Best of luck!
K.
yep-you get that tar stuff for a few days. and then the seedy mustard blow out poops happen. within a week the poops will change.
oh my goodness I had to giggle a little bit when I read your post :) I remember those frantic days, I think we asked the doctor like a zillion questions on that 3 day visit... Baby first has tons of meconium to get out (that gooey stuff) then I imagine you have more let green and then yellow slime stuff. oh just wait until you are feeding him different things, I had forgetten thats when it gets really gross! Your baby is fine, have fun!
The sound could just be gas so you might want to check your diet... tarry at first is PERFECTLY normal, then transitional can be a little green....
Breastfed babies use their intake very efficiently and don't have as much poop as formula fed babies usually.....are you taking any medicines of any kind?
If you have any breastfeeding concerns you could contact a local LLL. They are very helpful.
I was a total worry wart many times, too....don't sweat that! Just be glad that you are a concerned and observant mommy! By the way, mine are all grown up...33-23....and we all lived to tell about it.... :)
