Is It Appropriate to Give a Personal Gift Card to a Teacher?

My daughter's dance teacher will have a birthday next week. We like her very much and I really wanted to give her something.
In the past I gave teachers a box of chocolate or something small and a gift card as part of the group.
But in this case I think she would not like chocolates ( she is very slim) and a gift card to her favourite restoraunt would be better.
I am not sure if it is OK. What do you think? What presents did you gave a teacher?

What can I do next?

ABSOLUTELY! Take it from a former teacher and Vice-Principal.....I have enough candles, chotchkies, chocolate, and gift baskets to last me an eternity. Let the teacher do something for herself as she probably doesn't get that opportunity that often. Teachers make beans for pay and are often super busy all through the school year. Gift cards are great!

I almost always do gift cards. I've mostly done Barnes and Noble, but not always. Last spring we had to say goodbye to our son's speech teacher (she took another job), and we really liked her. I put together a gift basket of things that I thought a speech teacher would appreciate at a new job.

Gift cards are great!

I am friends with several school teachers and can tell you they LOVE gift cards. They get so much chocolate, and so many coffee mugs that they honestly don't know what to do with them. They end up throwing them out most of the time. Gift cards are perfect!

You're good here. I gave my son's kinder teacher a Dunkin' Donuts GC because she loves their coffee. No worries.

Of course, I'm sure she would be very thankful and thrilled.

Oh, and what does being slim have to do with chocolate? I don't even weigh 100 pounds, and I can put away chocolate...and any other food for that matter.

No gifts.. it over-steps boundaries... A card is good enough.. have your child fill it out..
I no longer give bday gifts to teachers.. it's too personal... However, at Christmas, I might buy them something, It's not that I am cheap... it's just that I think have good boundaries is a good thing...

I have given teachers gifts cards for restaurants, movies, Starbucks and it went over well.

My daughter's orchestra instructor LOVED Blue Man Group and we=hen we were in Vegas, we had front row seats to Blue Man Group. SO, because he was (and still is) daughter's favorite teacher (she has since graduated) we bought him some Blue Man Group drumsticks. I'm not kidding that is all he talked about afterwards.. it was a huge hit with him.

So, if you know of something she loves, maybe pick up something that is meaningful to her but gift cards are always welcomed.

Absolutely fine and it will be a thoughtful gift. We give small things at Christmas to the dance teachers and receptionists (candy/food) and at the end of the year give them Starbucks cards since they all like Starbucks, or a gift card to one of the local dance supply stores.

Oh, I think it would be fine! It's not over-personal, and the fact that you know her favorite restaurant will resonate with her. How kind of you to want to give your daughter's dance teacher a gift!

Diana:

I would do a gift card. Since she's a dance teacher - ask if any other families want to contribute and do it from the whole class.

It makes it kind of funky since it's her birthday and not Christmas....depending upon your relationship....not sure if that will make her uncomfortable...

Go with what you want. I would say - gift card....

Good luck!

I'd say you could see if any other parents want to go in with you, then it would be a group gift and not something so personal.
