Is It Likely I Will Get Gestational Diabetes on a Third Pregnancy?

This is my third pregnancy and I have not had gestational diabetes with the other two. What are the chances I'll get it this time? Are they lower or the same? I'm just curious because my test is coming up and it always makes me a little nervous. :)

What can I do next?

I can't answer what the likelihood that you will get GD is for the third pregnancy. . . but I can tell you that if you have, it just isn't a big deal as long as you follow the eating plan and heed the doctor's advice. Try not to stress out about it! I had it with my first pregnancy but not my second. Not a big deal again, as long as you follow all the instructions.

I had it when I was pregnant with my daughter and it was my first pregnancy. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The worst part was having to poke my finger four times a day to monitor my glucose level, but other than that I controlled it with diet and exercise so I never needed insulin shots and my tests were all normal after I had my daughter. It can affect the birth weight of your baby, so I did get a lot more ultrasounds than normal, especially towards the end of the pregnancy to make sure I wasn't going to have to schedule a c-section, and my daughter ended up coming early but all was well. Good luck!

I had GD with my second. I am thin and in shape so it was a bit of a shock. It's not hereditary but more so hormonal (your placenta basically rejects the natural insulin that your body makes). Once you do get GD you are at a higher risk for developing diabetes but thats much later down the road. So honestly you could develop it. But you could have developed it with your first or second. I have freinds who had it with their first pregnancy but not with the second. No worries. Just eat well and take care of yourself.

The risk increases with age but otherwise your risk would be about the same. I had my son when I was 19 and was fine. I had my daughter when I was 34 and had GD. All is fine now though.

Not anymore likely than the 1st or 2nd. BUT,watch your weight ,that comes into play ,too! Make healthy choices whether it happens or not. Good Luck and take care, C. S.

I think it's hard to say, but I chances are you won't if you didn't have it with the first 2. I know how you feel. I'm 38 weeks along with my 3rd, but the day before my glucose test I made my husband go and get me a Dairy Queen blizzard because I figured since I've crossed the 40 yr. mark, my chances of developing GD were greater and after it was confirmed there would be no more blizzards! But everything came back ok. I still try to take it easy on the blizzards. Good luck.

I don't know your chances, but my mom had seven kids, only with the fifth one did she have gestational diabetes....so it may just vary every case

You never know. My SIL had it with her boys (first 2 pregnancies) and did not have it w/ her daughter which was her third pregnancy and she did not do anything different during beginning of each one.

Congrats! I'm currently pregnant with #3 also :)

I didn't have GD with any of my pregnancies, but with the 2nd and 3rd the screen came back positive and I had to go in for the confirmation - which both time came back negative. I think it has more to do with heredity, and my doctor said that have GD can be an indicator that you may be more likely to develope regular diabetes later on.

I don't think GD is as serious as many women think. Most of the time it can be controlled with diet and excersise. So try to relax and good luck!!
