I am looking for an online game that I can play with my great nephew who lives across the country. It needs to be one where I can invite a specific player to play and where we could pause it and return to the game later. Also, we would like to leave each other messages some while we play.
At first I thought checkers on pogo.com would work, but they aren't really set up for pausing the game and returning to it later except for brief bathroom breaks.
I had also heard about the Chinese game called Go and that sounded good because I hear they give you up to 2 days to make a move before the game is ended and the win awarded to the last one who moved. You can also play 7 players at once. But I couldn't find where I can invite a particular player, but maybe you can do that.
I am even willing to pay for the software or download, if there is not a free online game available. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
Nevermind, I found it! yourturnmyturn.com Yeah! We are playing checkers and we can make just one move every 3 days, if we wanted to. I highly recommend it. They have lots of other games too.
My son likes ikariam.org it is a virtual game where you build villages and get items from other groups or fight to get them. He loves it.
There is an online game at Freerealms.com. My husband plays it, but it is very kid-friendly (though being able to read would be necessary). There is a chat interface and little mini-games that come up that are similar to bejeweled and other games of that sort. But you can also run around the pretend world together, train your in-game pets, do little quests, increase your cooking skills, be a letter carrier who has to deliver a package in a certain amount of time, etc... there are many aspects to it, so you and your nephew could pick something you like and work on it together. You can pause the game at any time.

If he has access to facebook.com, perhaps through one of his parents' accounts, the games there allow you to take turns and chat. I play wordscraper regularly with friends (it's like scrabble). There are a lot of other games that might be more kid-friendly too. You could check those out.
Scrabble on Facebook is a lot of fun and totally meets your criteria
A girlfriend of mine in the UK introduced me to online Scrabble, which is pretty accessible to older kids. We pretty much kept a running game going for several months. I can't for the life of me remember which webpage it was, but a quick google search for free online scrabble should get you somewhere!

www.vzones.com would perfect for that. I used to be a "police officer" there. It's literally a community online. Just like a neighborhood. You make a little person, rent a house, decorate it, walk around the neighboorhood, talk to people that pass by, go to other's houses for games like bingo etc. It's a small window that you can keep open like your browser and can be minimized. You can leave each other mail too. There's a membership fee but I think it's small :) I was there for years and really enjoyed it. Great way to "hang out" with family who live far away.
Try Pogo.com. Lots of free games and can chat while playing.
Hey K. , have you looked at www.clubpenguin.com. My girls love it and they play it with friends from school. Its a snow land / ski slope with games. You can also invite friends to play but its safe for kids too because its protected. Hope this helps. L.. Mother of 4.
Skype is a free phone calling service that uses webcams. We used it to talk face to face with my husband while he was gone for a few months for military training. It has games on it that can be played by the two parties. My kids loved playing games with Daddy on Sunday afternoons.

Pogo.com has some great games. All types. You can play one-on-one, as a group or single-player games. There is room chat and private chat. I have been playing for about 2 years now. The chat is clean and the people are friendly. Hope this helps.

My instant messenger has tic tac toe on it and a drawing application that my cousin and I try to draw things and the other guesses what it is or add things to the other's drawing.
this may be a bit away from what you want, but I figured I would throw it out there as an out of the box kind of thing.... Webkinz. you may already know about them, but if not they are stuffed animals that you buy and each one has a code to set up a virtual room for the animal. it allows you to play games and win coins to buy food and other stuff for the animal, including more rooms to make a house, etc. there is a chat function as well as a way to play games against another user. The games are mostly learning ones for children, but my husband and I both find we enjoy the games as well. my daughter likes to play a battleship kind of game with her friends. depending on the age of the child this might be a good option (my kids are 5 & 9 and love it- my son enjoys it just as much as my daughter although his "physical stuffed animal" doesn't get as much play time as hers.) oh yeah, you can also send email through it. They have full size Webkinz and lil kinz (a 1/2 size)they usually run between $5 and $16 depending on where you go and a lot of times you can find buy one get one. just a thought. good luck finding something you'll both enjoy.

Is this the Scrabble site you mentioned? I've been playing with friends here for years. It does now require a subscription ($12/yr), but it's been worth it for me.
