This is probably nothing, but I would talk to a doc. I have read numerous times about people/kids craving non-food items as a nutritional deficiency and also caused by a genetic disorder such as Krohn's syndrome. Just read an article about it about a month or so ago.

I gotta tell ya, I read this at 6am this morning and started my day off with a chuckle! I know people that have their crib rails all sorts of chewed up lol..
Just face it sister, you have a beaver on your hands!!!
Lol..nothing to worry about I'm sure!!
I think that's alot of the reason lead paint was removed from cribs.

there is such a thing where ppl crave dif. "odd" things..i think it is called Pica & is most commonly seen in pregnant women & young children. You should talk to your childs pediatrician about this as the more mobile your child gets the harder it will be for you to keep these things away. Could just be a phase that she is going through or that she likes the texture or feeling on her gums...but it never hurts to ask

good luck

Have you tried giving her a wooden teething toy? I know I have seen them on the market, mostly on the web or at natural stores. My sister-in-law has a few for her son and loves them. The toys she has are specifically made to be chewed on and have no lead, toxins, etc in the finish. Definitely discourage her from chewing on your furniture!! Good luck.

Not weird. My son did that when he was little. Wood has a distinct taste and is a good balance between hard and soft, so it feels good to bite into when you're teething.

I doubt she is craving wood- she is not getting any nutritional value from it, but it probably does feel good to chew on. Keep taking it away from her- she could get lead or other toxins from the paint, varnish, finish. Just make sure she has plenty of teethers. She is smart enough to know when Mom doesn't approve; therefore the tears when you tell her "no", but that doesn't mean you shouldn't.

No, I don't think its wierd, but I do think you got to stop it. I had a friend whose son did the same thing. I'm sure you've tried teething toys, but maybe try to push those instead of telling her no.

Hi S.,

I would say that the baby is just trying to help those little teeth get through her gums. When my grandson was that age he would even try to chew on table and chair legs, just like a puppy! He is now 16 months old and although he is still teething, his front teeth are all in, so he no longer bites everything is sight.
Babies R Us carries a "gummy" style crib rail cover that will allow her to bite without chewing through to the wood. And like others have said, give her other things to chew on, and keep an eye on her when she is crawling around to make sure that she doesn't do any damage to herself.

It may be weird, but my son did exactly the same thing at that age. He especially liked gnawing on my coffee table, since it was at mouth-level once he had pulled himself up. Once he quit teething, he stopped chewing on my furniture.

Good luck!

Whole foods sells wood teething toys that are safe (no paint etc) I would try that first. My dd loved leather, she nibbled on the arms of my husband's chair, we now call it "distressed" LOL.

I am a mother of 3 (ages 7, 5 & 2) and have not experienced this myself, but it sounds like she likes the feel of wood on her gums (due to her teething). I would probably check with my pediatrician just to make sure. I know my kids had a hard time when teething, their gums looked soo sore.
Hope this helps.

My son is doing the same thing! He has chewed on his crib. I even have a protective rail on the top and he chewed under it! He also tries to get the kitchen table if I turn my back! He is also teething, but I am glad to hear I am not alone! I am also at a loss what to do!
