We found out today we are having a girl. We love the name Abbigail, but we would like to add a y to it somehow. My husband does not want the end of the name to have -gayl in it though. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Some were asking why we wanted a Y in the name. It's a family tradition to have a Y in the girls names.

Honestly, I would not get all kree8tivv with the spelling - she'll have a name that others will assume is spelled Abigail and she'll spend her entire life correcting them. She will probably end up being Abby anyway.

Skip the y. Weird spellings cause mistakes imo. It's usually spelled Abigail. If you want a Y, you'll get one - the Abigails I know are all called Abby. Spelled just like that.

Congrats!!! We love our girls!!

I would avoid weird spellings because people associate them with illiteracy. She may spend the rest of her life correcting people about the spelling. Then again, maybe not!

My girls went to school with a girl named Abbygail, how about that?

Although - I have to say, I'm not a fan of creative spellings. Your daughter will have to spell her name for everyone her entire life and explain that it's different than the typical spelling. It doesn't seem big, but it could add up to being a pain for her. And employers tend to see people with creative spelling as less educated, no matter what is on their resume. So if it was me, I'd stick with plain old Abigail.

Congratulations on getting a girl soon!

I adore the name Abbigail. No offense, but why do you want to have a "y" in it? It's your business and you can certainly name your baby how you want but I think Abigail or Abbigail stands pretty nicely on it's own.

Best wishes to you!!!

I agree don't go all weird with spellings, but I don't think adding a "Y" would be too weird for the name you've chosen. I think Abbygail would be my choice. By the way, my family tradition was a V name for girls, and we chose Vayle- I thought that spelling was so much prettier than Vail or Vale; I guess you could consider Abbigayle, but that doesn't look as good as Abbygail does to me. Just play with different things and see what looks best to you, have friends read what you've written and ask how they would would pronounce it. I like the other suggestion for AbbyGail as well. Unless you really want her formal name to have the Y, a clear nickname is Abby, which has a Y.

What's wrong with Gayl? The name Gayle is sometimes spelled that way.

I know an AbbyGail, an Abbigail, an Abygail and an Abiegail.

All pronounced the same...and I've never heard anyone mispronounce their names.

Congrats on the little one!
