It's Starting to Smell Soooo Baaaad...

My (genius) husband gave the baby a cupful of milk the other morning... AND DIDN'T PUT THE STOPPER IN IT. My son hates milk... non spill sippy cups are my hero when it comes to offering this kid milk.

Anyway, so my son throw the cup, it lands on my about a year old mircofiber couch, and proceeds to empty itself completely.

EWW!! I had put a towel on it and blotted for hours, but you can still see the spot... and now it's starting to smell sour :(

WHAT DO I DO?! I do have a 5 year warranty on it, but I'm afraid that if they replace the piece (assuming I can even find the warranty receipt!!), that it will not be the same exact color as the rest of the couch. It's a sectional.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have to find the warranty first... yes, that's the easy answer, but you DO know my house EATS important papers, right? So I need a plan A, leaving the warranty as plan B... because this is smelly :(

baking soda will/SHOULD absorb the smell..

vinegar and water SHOULD clean it...however after googling how to get milk out of microfiber....this is what I got!!!

If you paid by credit card - you might be able to call the credit card company and ask them for a copy...also since it's been less than 2 years - call the store that you bought the couch from and ask for a copy of the receipt...most stores keep records for 2 years...

If you can remove the cushion from the sofa, take it outside, spray it with peroxide, and the wash it throughly with the hose, and leave it in the sun to dry.

I would spray a mix of vinegar and water on it and then blot dry. The vinegar gets rid of all kinds of odors and the vinegar smell will go away. Hopefully when totally dry the spot will lessen too.

BTW - now that you have a kid - all your stuff is going to be ruined ;)

do you have a carpet cleaner with the attachment for furniture? I would try that or a bottled solution you can buy called Nature's Miracle.

Gah! I had a love hate with those sippy cups. Loved them because they didn't spill hated them because I always forgot those stupid plugs at the worst times. Here have some milk in the car, grrrrr.

On the warranty they replace everything but they fight you tooth and nails to not replace anything because they have to replace it all, ya know? Like with mine they would have to replace the sectional and the swivelly chair I just had to have. :p

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they will send out a professional cleaner as part of the warranty so maybe they can get it out. :)

vinegar & water solution is amazing for so many things and does a wonderful job with odors. If it still smells after that try sprinkling baking soda (after it's completely dry), leave it on and then vacuum it up the next day.

Also a suggestion - get a huge cardboard portfolio thingee with a rubber band clsoure and shove all warranties in it. Stick in in the cabinet over your fridge, or the linen closet - or wherever you keep the vacuum. Or if you have drawers in your coffee table (we won't buy one without storage) throw them all in there. We used to keep all owners manuals & related papers in in a portfolio thingee in the cabinet over the fridge. Now they're all in the coffee table drawers. Every so often, while watching TV, we'll go through the manuals and discover we have papers for hedge-trimmers or cellphones or inflatable kiddy-pools from years ago (our kids are teens now!) so we ditch all the old stuff and have all this room in the drawer! (until it gets cluttered again).

Cleaning the surface is easy, but it soaked down into the stuffing.
I would have taken a wet dry vacuum to it initially to get the moisture out.
Try a product for pets that works for serious smells (it's going to have to soak in to get to where the milk soaked in), then vacuum the moisture out and keep a fan on it for a few days till it's totally dry inside and out.
Once it's completely dry, the smell should be gone.
Another idea is to get a carpet cleaning company that also does furniture.
I think Stanley Steamer will do couches, but there must be some others out there that will do the same thing.

Microfiber can be cleaned. Take some vinegar, little soap, and water and scrub it out. I have done this on my microfiber and the spots have come out. Do not get it too wet. If the smell persists then go to your warranty!

I have microfiber, which I hate bc it is such a pain to keep clean with small kids! Do your couch pillows have removable covers? Mine have zippers and I just take them off and throw them in the wash periodically. That milk being in the foam is what is stinking so you can wipe down the foam while the covers are washing and spray it down directly with febreeze and that should do it. Good luck! If the covers aren't removable then yeah it's warranty time.

I'm getting ready to clean my microfiber couch right now! I use a bucket of hot water with a few drips of dish soap in it and a wash cloth. I wash the entire thing this way. It takes a little elbow grease to get it completely clean but it comes out beautiful and looking brand spanking new. We used to have a warranty on it, but they would just come out and spot clean and that leaves the finished product looking uneven. I don't think they would replace the piece without trying to clean it first. Just also know that if you take matters into your own hands and try to clean it yourself, it might void the warranty. Can you call the place you purchased it from and ask them about the warranty? They would be able to best advise you if you can't find the paperwork.
Good luck!

Can you get the cover off to at least hand wash this part? I second Diana's suggestion. Nature's Miracle or another enzyme cleaner will take care of the smell, but you have to let it soak in and dry. It's never discolored anything I used it on. And if you can get the cover off, maybe you can soak/wash the cushion in the tub to get most of the milk out before using the enzyme cleaner at the end.

I'm a big fan of Nature's Miracle. Saturate it, let it sit, blot it up. The smell won't disappear alltogether until the solution is completely dry.

We had a couch that had a wood piece inside that broke. It was less than three months old and I knew that it should be covered under warranty. I couldn't find the paper anywhere. I called the store and they had it on file. My couch was fixed two days later.

We have also had cushions replaced on our older sectional sofa and when the first one didn't match, they happily gave us another.

The other option is to clean it yourself. But that depends on what kind of microfiber you have. Check the tag. Some types of microfiber will get water rings if they get wet. We had a couch like this with a short life span in our house...everything made a mark or ring on this thing (there was a reason it was clearanced out.). Baby wipes also work well for stains and blotting, but I am not sure what it will do for soured milk smell. If it's water safe (has a W on the tag) it's as easy as throwing the cover in the wash and setting the cushion out in the sun to get rid of the milk smell. Good luck.

If you paid for the insurance that covers this sort of spill, they will make sure it matches or replace the entire thing or re-upholster the whole thing.

They will have your warranty info on file. I've never had to have my paperwork when I filed a warranty on something.

If you have a warranty or scotchguard protection call the company for advice. If you are on your own the use club soda.

Haha...we built and moved into this house when my now 4.5 year old was 13 months old. My daughter turned 5 a few months later and we had a "spa" party for her. My baby emptied a bottle of nail polish on my couch. Hubby and I freaked out (not in front of him) and called the warranty place. Shocker that it wasn't covered. Funny, because they told us at the store the warranty was great to cover anything...not so much. But now we look and laugh and remember that day 3.5 years later :). As for the milk smell...can you put an absorbing powder on it?

Have you tried cleaning it with a vinegar and water solution? Vinegar gets smells out and shouldn't be harmful to the fabric (although you may want to do a spot test somewhere non-visible first just to be sure. You might also try sprinkling with baking soda which should absorb the moisture and help w/the smell.

Wow, I have never heard of a warranty covering spills. That is pretty awesome.

If they don't replace it you can always have a professional that cleans carpet give you an estimate or referrals. I think we just always do the furniture at the same time as the carpets when we did that.

So, they will replace the piece, but you're "afraid" it might not match? Get the piece and if it doesn't match, maybe they'll replace the rest.

You'll never know until you try it.

Personally, I think the sour milk smell will stay unless you get rid of that part completely.
