My son is 8 months old & scartches his ankles on the carpet. He now has a rash going to his knees. We have been putting banaids w/ad ointment, with socks over them on him during the day but it doesn't seem to go away. It's been there for like 2 weeks now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I took him to the doctors today. As I thought they didn't know what it was either. So she gave me 2 creams to put on it, an oral steroid, and told me to give him an oatmeal bath everynight for the next 5 days. If it doesn't clear up then to bring him back. Crossing my finger that it works.

Is the carpet new? Did you use any different cleaners or deodorizers on it? Might it be fleas? Sometimes when my ankles get itchy, I just put lotion on and it quits.

I love leggings for my baby. He is almost 11 mos now and I still use them. You can get them at Target now- they are called Babylegs. I started using them when he started crawling since the blanket thing didn't work anymore. And they are great for outside. My nephew is a couple mos older and his knees actually have callouses but my sons knees are nice and smooth. (One thing- they will shrink in the dryer so drip dry them.) Aveeno is a good product to try- I love it. And also, if you know anyone who is a Melaleuca user their lotion Renew is the best stuff for skin issues.

He could have picked up an infection from the carpet (not that I'm saying your carpet is dirty!)or he could be allergic to something, or it could possibly be a yeast infection. Either way, since it hasn't gone away in 2 weeks, you may want to take him in to the Doctor to make sure it's not infected. Good Luck

When you say he has a rash up to his knees, do you mean from scratching his ankles on the carpet? like it is spreading from the ankle to the knees, or by dragging his legs along the carpet, he is now scratched up to his knees? I am trying to get a little understanding, because a spreading rash requires medical attention. It could be a number of things, eczema which can be dried up with a mixture of 1% hydrocortisone and Eucerin or Lotrimin lotin applied 4 times a day for a about a week. It could be allergies and again, hydrocortisone cream can help alleviate that. It could be fungal in nature and thus AD ointment would not take care of that, or it could be infection from bacteria or dirt in the carpet getting into the abrasions that the carpet is making in his skin and would thus need an antibacterial ointment and possbile oral meds. so I think you have two choices, either try other ointments such as hydrocortisone, or an antifungal cream (lotrimin AF or maybe neosporin AF-- because I believe that has both antibiotic and antifungal in one cream) if you try those and get no result after say a week, then I would definitely take him to the doctor. the other choice, is skip the trial period and go to the doctor. I'm usually a try things out first kinda mom, but 2 weeks is a little long and in this case I would actually advocate going to the doctor first. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

It sounds like eczema to me ... my 8 year old has had it since birth. The more they itch, the more the rash appears. I would talk to his pediatrician about topical ointments you can try since he is so young. We use an over the counter cream that is fabulous called CeraVe. We see an amazing kids dermatologist at Duke if you need a referral at some point. Aquaphor also use to help quite a bit.
Good luck!

Some kids are extremely sensitive, like my son is allergic to dust mites (which thrive in carpets and such). Make sure the carpet is vacuumed frequently. If it's a rash, it usually needs to dry out. I use calamine lotion, and you might want to give him an Aveeno oatmeal bath. (They sell this at the commissary for $3 less than elsewhere!)
If the rash doesn't go away, take him to the doctor, because it could be a parasite, such as scabies, which is highly contagious.

Two things: 1) Put socks on your boy. 2) Put a big blanket on the floor to cover the rug.

Keep pants and socks on him for awhile. If he is itching, take him to the doc. Keep the house temp very cool. You can give him baking soda baths, which will help.

I would go with the socks or leggins...basically leg warmers for infants and toddlers...if you need a few web addresses let me know and I will send them to you. I bought several and love them. Back to the issue, can't help with the rash, but I would avoid band-aids b/c they are a choke hazard for infants...you know how they put everything in their mouth. This happened to a friend who put a band-aid on her baby and next thing she new her son was choking and turning blue. He finally coughed it up...not to scare you. I never thought of that before until I cut my lo finger when clipping nails. I put a band-aid on it and next thing I new it was gone and in his mouth. I thought DUH!!! Hope you find out what is causing the rash. Do you have pets?

Dear S.,
It might be the soap you are using. Or may to much is use in his cloths when washing them. Try washing them by themself. The material around the knees might be tight and causes a itchiness there. Put on loose fitting cloths that won't rub so hard on the knees or ankle. he might be reacting to the soap. Maybe too use a different soap on him when bathing. My son was also breaking out, So I got a bar of soap made of oats. You might be able to ask the pharmistis or your Doctor about this.
Take care

This is just a stab in the dark, but try putting socks on him that are too long. Take the socks off while he's eating or sleeping.
Try .5% hydrocortisone cream but only use for 2 weeks at a time.
Do not use carpet fresheners due to the chemicals.
Good Luck!

Go and get some HYDROCORTISONE 1/2% CREAM. That will help get rid of the rash and keep him from itching so much. You can put it on 2-3 times a day. Also, like the other posters have said, make sure that the carpet is well vacuumed and put down a blanket for him to crawl on. He may have eczema, which my daughter has, and she is sensitive to the rugs too. WE live on the hydrocortizone cream. Make sure you put it on him immediately after baths. That is the best time. Also, make sure it is on him before he goes to sleep at night, if you didn't give him a bath that night. If that doesn't work, then go to the doctor. Oh, and also, wash your rug with straight hot water. You may want to do that twice, it will pull a lot of impurities out of the rug that might be effecting his skin. We do that once a month to be able to let my 7 year old play on the rug. It doesn't hurt the carpet.
Good luck,

E.
