Itchy Scalp - Southington,CT

I have read all the answers for dry scalp and have tried many of them. My daughter is 2 and you can see how drp her scalp is. I have the humidifier on in her room...I only wash her hair twice a week. I would rub the olive oil in her hair but she does not like me to rinse her hair as it so I can't put that in daily. I get itchy scalp as well and wasn't sure if I could use Scalpasin (sp?) on her.

What can I do next?

Hi,

When I have problems with dry flakey scalp, I use SeaBreeze antiseptic and using a Q-tip dipped in it, rub it over the affected area....it works really well. My mother used it on me when I was a child and I used it on my daughter....and continue to use it when I have the occasional itchy scalp.

It depends on what stage it's in. Does she have flakes of skin building up on her scalp (scaly appearance)? If so you don't want to use the olive oil as it will trap the flakes and make itching worse. At this point you should try a medicated shampoo like Neutrogena T-gel (there are others too, just can't think of their names- look for ones that say they are for people with psoriasis). JUST MAKE SURE YOU COVER HER EYES WHEN RINSING IT OUT. These shampoos are not tear-free! But after just a few applications it should take care of the flakiness/scaliness. I used this on my daughter when she was just an infant and it worked very well and she stopped scratching.

Just a thought - my son's head is dry & itchy but it's due to allergies. When those are bad - it's worse. But when he's on med's or his allergies aren't bad - the itching is so much better. Could this be the issue ?

I can't make a recommendation on the dry scalp thing, but I can tell you that as someone who works in the Head Lice industry, olive oil in the hair is generally not recommended. Because it's food grade, there could be many bacteria that could grow in the oil and create hazards for your child down the road.

I'd probably recommend baby oil instead or a good conditioner. Have you taken her to the pediatrician/dermatologist to see what they recommend?

This is actually a sure sign of needing good oils in the diet. I would purchace a high quality omega 3-6-9 blend to have her take internally. This usually consists of fish oils, flax, evening primrose, or even hemp and borage oil. These are all excellent sources of good omegas that are essential bot only to healthy skin and scalp, but also proper brain function, digestion and mine support. You can also put these oils( especially evening primrose, works amazing) right on the scalp. Try heling from the inside, it sounds like that is what she may need.

Hi K.,
I would not use the Scalpasin. Much too harsh and it only treats symptoms anyway.
Check out Shaklee Baby at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife They have organic shampoo, cleanser and lotion.
I you use the childrens' vitamin it may also help. They did wonders for my son's allergies.
Good luck and God bless.
