Itchy Skin from Antibiotics for Mastitis

I am on my 3rd day of antibiotics from minor Mastitis. My skin (face) seems to be a lot drier and red and itchy. My 2 month old son who's nursing is also breaking out in red bumps like baby acne. My question is it from the antibiotic??

Is there a natural alternative to antibiotics I can continue that's safe while breasfeeding instead of taking these pills?

K.,
It may not be, but definitely check it out with the peditrician b/c he may be allergic to the antibiotic and if later on down the road he is put on that same antibiotic again, he can have a very serious reaction....even life threatening. It is not the first time we take an antibiotic that is the scary time, it is with the 2nd time. After our bodies have determined we are allergic to one, we build anti-bodies. When we are reintroduced to the same antibiotic later on, our bodies can have a very bad reaction.
It really warrants a trip to the Dr's to make sure!
Even if the Dr. says all is ok, you may want to always mention that your baby had a rash when you took that antibiotic as a reminder that there was some sort of a reaction. With the amount of antibiotics we have today, there should always be an alternative for that one that can work just as well.

Good luck and I hope all is ok...
(It could just be a coincidence and it be his baby acne just coming in at the same time you are having your issues.)
Take care
P.

You're experiencing an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. Antibiotics pass through breast milk to your son and he may also be having a reaction. At age 2 months, it's also possible that he may only have baby acne, which is completely normal. Ask your doctor to presecribe a different antibiotic that's safe while nursing, and ask your pediatrician about your son's reaction.

Hi K.,
Have you taken this particular antibiotic before? If not, I would think possibly you are having an allergic reaction to it. I would contact your doctor to discuss this, he/she may want to change to a different medication.

You might be having an allergic reaction. I'm allergic to many antibiotics (in fact I have hives from them right now). Allergies can be dangerous if they continue. Hives or itchy bumps can progress to constricted airways. I'd be especially worried that it's affecting the baby. Check with your doctor and/or pediatrician.

i would stop and call your doctor. i honestly dont know, but it could be an allergic reaction, which can lead to different reactions, i wouldnt mess around with such a little baby.
i wanted to add... because i saw someone ask if you have taken this before, a natural question, but you need to know that after you have a baby, or another baby, allergies can change, can come and go and be completely different. all my allergies are different now than they used to be pre-kids. im allergic to new things,no longer allergic to old things, and some of my reactions are completely different than they used to be. amazing, a whole new body!!

Hi K. --

I'm so sorry. It sounds like you're having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, and your son is too. First you need to tell your doctor and they will have you stop the Rx and possibly prescribe a different one, but as you can see from your son, they pass through your milk to him.

If you'd like to try a natural approach, you can take Probitics to repopulate good bactreia in your gut - it takes time (one to two weeks), but it works well for many.

You can also take garlic which is nature's antibiotic. If eating it (raw is best, you can rub it on toast or crush into mashed potatoes) doesn't work for you there are some good brands that you can take as supplements.

Best of health,
S.
