Hi! I hope someone else has this problem and a solution. All my life every time I run whether it be indoors or out, I usually can't go too long because my skin will itch terribly. It is only on my stomach and thighs, but I get so miserable that I have to stop. I have tried a few lotions, maybe I'm using the wrong ones. Please help I'd like to stay on the treadmill for longer than 20-30 minutes! :)

What can I do next?

This sounds a little strange, but at times my husband is allergic to his own sweat. He says he is allergic to something he eats and the only reaction he has is when the allergen comes out when he sweats. Maybe try an allergist?

I'm lmbo. I've read all the coments so far, and I can't stop laughing. All the different ideas and mine is different from all the rest. I honestly was going to say "are you kidding me" to everyone elses coments, but maybe I'm the funny one. This has happened to me too. All my life, and when it begins to happen, I get so happy. I was always told and beleived that, when this begins to happen that is the moment you've reached "the burn". Which means the moment you actually begin to burn the fat. You can feel the fat burn away. And depending on where you feel it first is where it begins to burn first. I was a fitness trainer for a while, so this isn't just coming out of my @$$. Don't stop when it starts to burn. That is when you know that your exercise is working. LOL

Best of luck and keep on keeping on.

I have had that problem too for a long time. I stopped running for several years because of it. I did the elliptical instead and didn't have that problem. I went to a Dr. and she said to take an antihistamine (like others have mentioned). I did that for awhile and it helped. Now I don't take it very often (I forget:)) and I hardly itch. I do seem to itch more if its outside so I only run on the treadmill. So take an antihistamine at night and/or in the morning and good luck!

That sometimes happens to me. What I have found out if I try and just keep going it will stop. But someone told me that it is the toxins in my body that I am sweating out also. Toxins such as sugar, bread, salt and things of that nature. Now that I have reduced those things and keep going while I am itching it goes away within minutes. I would suggest to try it once and see if it stops. I also use a natural raw Shea Butter on my skin as well. HTH

Don't know if you've tried already...but limit the motion of your skin during excersize by wearing a girdle or similar garment. It makes jogging SO much easier when you don't feel anything move!! Plus it's extra resistance work on the muscles you're using.

Your muscles produce a chemical when you reach the "burn". It comes out through your skin and causes intense itching. I had this also when I first started intense running in order to loose weight. The more my muscles became toned it stopped. I thought of everything before I asked my friend in college who was a personal trainer/kinesiology major(now a sports medicine doctor). He laughed and said AWESOME....means you are really getting behind it, and it is a sign of a good work out! The only thing that helped me was to apply a small amount of benadryl spray. I could not take benadryl orally before a work out because of the sleepiness. Good luck.

that occasionally happens to me -- when i haven't exercised in a while or i'm not as consistent about it - my acupuncturist said it it's probably the pores opening up and all the toxins being released from my body - obviously my body needs to get rid of those toxins - keep on exercising - work through it - drink lots of water to help

I used to have the same problem, but only on my thighs. This was when I did not exercise regularly. Now I run 5-6 days per week and have not had the problem in a very long time. It is a blood flow/circulation issue and it's not anything to worry about. It will go away when your body becomes more conditioned and in shape.

have you tried changing your laundry detergent? Maybe the friction of running and the detergent are bothering you. I know my shorts make my legs itch where it hits my skin by the hem. I've switched to "all free and clear" and the detergent no longer bothers me at all.
The best moisturizer is oil...it will soak in better than any body butter or lotion will.

Itchy legs while running is a fairly common problem despite how strange it may sound. If you have just started running or have not run in a long time then you may be susceptible to itchy legs while running. There are a few reasons for this happening and usually it is pretty easy to remedy itchy legs while running. However there are cases where you might have to see a doctor.

What Causes Itchy Legs

If you have just started running then your itchy legs are the result of your capillaries expanding. When your body has not been inactive for a while the capillaries collapse and allow the minimal amount of blood needed for inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle.

When you exercise the capillaries need to expand to allow more blood to flow throughout your body. The nerves around these expanding capillaries send an impulse to the brain that is interpreted as an itch. The more you exercise the less you will feel this sensation as your capillaries remain open. After a few workouts you should stop having itchy legs while running.

If you have been running for a while and have itchy legs while running then it could be the weather that causes the itchiness. Cold or cool weather tends to dry skin and although your skin may itch while your not running it will get worse when you do run. Sweating will only make your dry skin itchier and it will feel like running is causing your legs to itch. This is easily remedied by using a good moisturizer everyday.

I would suspect that the itching is coming from ur circulation , is is getting in high gear . Ask ur doctor though before going on the treadmill again , just to be sure it isn't something more serious . God bless u , G.

I am not sure why you are getting the itchy skin, but if you want to try an excellant lotion, get Cerave. It is pricey, but I use it on my daughter's eczyma and it works wonders. I have used it on my cracked hands (too much handwashing going on here) and it was marvelous!

The reason your legs itch when you run or even walk, is because you probably haven't excersised in a long time. The
capillaries on the surface of your skin isn't used to pumping blood very fast to your skin surface. So the itch that you are expperiencing is the skin adjusting to the change. You can take benadryl 45 minutes before you go run, but all it will do is just make you itch a little bit longer, but at least you can break a sweat before you start to itch really bad. The more you exercise, it will eventually go away.

It sounds like your body is allergic to endorphines that your body is producing. When I get mad or embarrassed, my neck breaks out in a rash. I take benedryl. I don't know if it is a surface thing but you can try either using the topical benedryl cream. I would actually get the childrens benedryl liquid...whenever I start getting the histamine itch, I just take about a teaspoonful and it goes away...that little a dose shouldn't make you sleepy or have any affects like that on you, but be careful and try it the first time when you don't have to drive or when someone is around so you can see how it will affect you.

By the way, to get a good fat burning and toning workout, you really shouldn't need more than 30 mintues on the treadmil.

I have had the same problem for years. Once I had kids I realized that it was eczema, because my kiddos have it. I just use lotion everyday all over. Eucerin is good.

Once I decided to really start running on the treadmill and outdoors I just decided to bear through it. Once I get to the point of sweating I don't itch anymore. Now, I hardly ever notice it.

As Tracy said, it's probably because you don't exercise enough. That's what my parents always told me. We went walking and biking several days a week and I always felt that way. It was miserable.

I thought I was the only one with that issue. It only seems to come when I start excersing. I start to itch on my legs and thighs. I started taking benedryl (ONE PILL) 30 minutes before I head to the gym and it would help. Now I don't take anything and I still get it every now and then but it does go away after a couple of minutes but that feeling is so uncomfortable. I want to scratch but I don't want people looking and thinking I am dirty.

I do too...but as I do not excersize often...well...you know...so i had to think about it...here is a possibility...

Do your tears cause your cheeks to itch as well??

I have fair, sensitive skin...But more importantly the salt my body produces and releases in the form of sweat and tears has always caused me to be itchy. I wonder sometimes if has to do with my iodine allergy, but never researched it...

Normally a luke warm rag on my face for the tears or a regular shower to get the sweat off works for me...

If that is not what is causing the reaction for you, then I would need more specifics to give you any advice, and you might want to see a doctor for a diagnosis...

good luck... ;-)

It is a circulation issue but you probably don't need drugs. When it happens to me, I stop for a second and do a little bit of self massage on my legs to get the blood moving, hop up and get back moving. It works for me!

I have the same problem , except it happens in my arms. I recently started using a product from Avon called moisture therapy spray w/ oatmeal. It works really good. It cost about $5.00 , but worth it. Its also for insect bites & sunburns.

This happens to me but only when I do to much. I stop and do the same amount all week then gradually do 2 or more minutes at a time. I itch and get red when I have exceeded my limit and I have stressed my body out. It stops eventually just don't over do a work out. Your body could be like mine it has to slowly gradually get there. I always start by walking 1 mile on week 1 1/2 mile the next then 2 mile walk. Then I run for 3 minutes and walk the rest. Run 5 minutes and walk the rest just to show you what I mean about gradually. Good luck.

It actually sounds like your clothes are to blame...like your pants are rubbing against you and causing issues. Perhaps try different pants/shorts. (Meaning a different fit, or style.)

Beyond that I have no suggestions. Good luck!

I have the same problem and have not discovered the cause yet. My stomach; however, does only itch with one sports bra, but my legs are sporadic so I haven't determined why. The frequency in exercise may have something to do with it, but not for me (I've been exercising regularly for sometime.
