I had sex when I felt comfortable, but there were no restrictions to when I could have sex. You'll have some cramps for the first day or so, but I've had mine for 4 years and it's been smooth sailing.
how long after you have the miruna put in do you wait to have sex?

My doctor had me wait a full cycle to make sure it was truly inplace.
I had sex the same night, actually it was more like a few hours after I had it put in. It just depends on your comfort level and how you feel afterwards. Good luck.
Well, mine was inserted during my period, After bleeding was finished we were able to have sex right away. I dont recall the doctor saying to wait for any period of time. My advice to you though is do it while you can. For the first several months you will get your period every three weeks and it will last for 10 sometimes more days. Not real heavy but small amount of bleeding for days on end sometimes it picks up and is a little heavier for a few days. Thats how it was for me anyways. Good luck

Hi M.,
I too have had one done after 3 girls back to back 11 months apart and 18 months apart. Anyway because I am still young and was not really wanting to get tubes tied I did the mirena and the md told me just after you stop bleeding or spotting, you should be find to continue on with normal activity. I would suggest that if it is uncomfortable then you shold contcat them back to have the wire cut a little, oh yeah don't give details to your partner they might get uncomfortable thinking about it.My husband didn't want to know details but my doctor gave me that tip. Good luck and congrats on your child.
Hi M.,
I get my IUD next week. I had a baby 5 weeks ago and they are making me wait until I am 6 weeks out (so my uterus has enough time to shrink). They like to put them in when you are on your cycle but you don't HAVE to be. (I am nursing and don't have a cycle). My doctor told me that I needed to wait 5 days before having sex.
M., I am very glad you were able to have a child, My Daughter has been married for soon to be 8 years, And she has the same problem, When at home I had to take her to the Dr. and they put her on birth control pills so that she would Ovulate, and she wants a baby so bad.. Joy.. Sorry this wasn't what you were asking..
I had it put in the day the doctor released me, after having my baby. It was four weeks, and nothing was said to me afterwards about that. As far as I knew, I could when I wanted to and it was not uncomfortable. That seemed to work well for me, and I did, the day of or a few days after I know.
Hi M., I was told by my doc that I would be able to have sex right away. The only issue was that the placement of the IUD caused some cramping, so I really didn't feel like it until a day later. Hope this helps.
P.S. for the coment left previously about the aborting issue (if you are interrested) you can read this to put your mind at ease http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/how-does-iud-work.html
As soon as you put it in you can have sex. My doc told me when I left the doctors office I was free to have sex. So when ever you are ready. :-)
When I had mine inserted, I don't remember my md restricting any activity. Once it is in place, it is in place. You may not feel like having sex that nighr, but I'm sure you could if you wanted to. And it is suppose to be effective immediately.
My little boy is 16 weeks. I will have mine done May 30. My Dr. told me to use something else for seven days. Mirena does not cause abortion. How Mirena® Works ( this is from the web site)
Mirena is a tiny T-shaped piece of plastic that is placed into the uterus by your healthcare professional. Once Mirena is in place, it begins to slowly release small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into your uterus. It does not contain estrogen, so you can be free of estrogen-related side effects.
While there is no single explanation for how Mirena works, it may:
Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)
Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this is not the way it works in most cases)
It is believed that all 3 of these actions may work together to prevent pregnancy.
Mirena Works Precisely Where You Need It
It is thought that the small amounts of levonorgestrel that are released by Mirena make your cervical mucus thick and tacky. This is why sperms are immobilized and can't enter the uterus. And the thinning of the uterus is why you may have less menstrual bleeding over time. In fact, about 20% of women will have no period after one year, a safe (and, for most women, preferred) condition.
You do understand that an iud interupts pregnancy by aborting a fertilized ovum,(conception), preventing that ovum (embryo)from implanting itself in the uterine wall thus the "prevention" of pregnancy..or a very early abortion.
it takes a month for it to be fully effective. so if you plan on having sex in the first month use protection.
