Hi C. my name is Jessica and I decided to get an IUD after my second child. Mainly because we may decide to have another child but right now is not the perfect timing. I have never been good with taking the pill, nueva ring or anything else. My doctor suggested that I try the MIRENA. It is about the size of a quarter and is very comfortable. I can not even tell it is there. I have less cramps and my periods are about 2-3 days and eventually they go away completely. I have had mine in for about 5 months now and can not feel a thing. It does not bother my husband during intercourse and stays fully intact. I have not had any problems nor any surprise pregnancies. I love it. The only down fall was the insertion of it. I felt mild cramping but I am so greatful. It has the same effects of a tubable but is reversible. Hope I helped.

I also have the Merena and love it. I've had it since Jan. 2005 after my second child. After the initial cramping (which I thought weren't any worse than period cramps), and some spotting for a few weeks, I haven't had any problems. I sometimes don't even have a period, or just light spotting for a couple days.

My biggest concern was the hormones, since I refused to go back on the pill because it made me moody and not myself. This was a better option and the low dose of hormones doesn't seem to effect me as much. I still have a decent libido, although maybe slightly less than when I wasn't taking any birth control.

Hope that helps, good luck!

I have an IUD and I love it! It did take me awhile after getting it to stop bleeding completely, which is frustrating. My Dr. kept assurring me, just give it time, you will love it, and he was right. I've had it for a little over a year now and its nice to not think about birth control.

I have a friend who stopped having a period after she got hers, but I still have a light one. my dr says a lot of people will stop having one altogether.

an IUD was a great choice for us, we aren't planning on having any more kids but we weren't ready to do anything permanent just yet. We figure this will give us 4 more years, then we can decide what to do next.

Oh yeah, I have the Mirena IUD if that makes a difference. And when I got it, my ins paid for everything, I just had to pay a $10 office copay! Ins is all different, but have your dr check to see what yours will cover.

Good luck with your decision!

I have had the Mirena IUD since my postpartum checkup w/my 2 year old. It was put in November of 2005. I absolutely love it! The insertion is slightly painful (Take ibuprofen!), but akin to period cramps, and is temporary. I had some spotting the first couple of months, but now don't have a period at all (woohoo!). It's great to have effective birth control and not have to remember to take any pills. It lasts for 5 years, but if you decide to have more children, it can be easily removed.
Good luck! :)

C.,

I have the hormone one (merino?). It was wierd at first and I could feel the "strings", but now I love it. My periods are light and I am way less moody than I was on the pill.

There are 2 different types, the Paraguard which is made of copper and the Mirena and is anticontraceptive by using progesterone. The Paraguard can be left inside the uterus for up to 10 years and the Mirena only 3 years. I have the Paraguard and love it. I don't feel it and love it because it doesn't use hormones and I don't have to remember to take a pill or do anything. You need to check with your insurance to make sure they cover it as well b/c they may not. Also, with the Copper, you have an increased chance of bleeding than with the Mirena. I have the Paraguard(Copper one) and love it, and I haven't ever had any increased bleeding with it or any other issues with it. However, I have always been breastfeeding with it in. Just some things to think about. Do take 2-3tabs of ibprophen prior to placement and they will help decrease cramping pain. Good luck on your choice.

I had the Mirena as well. I thought it was going to be the best thing, but it didn't work very well for me. I got it because I was having problems using birth control pills. Basically, having a 2 week period with almost 2 weeks off, and very heavy bleeding. I got it the end of November 2006 and I had it removed 2 weeks ago. I had the continuous bleeding and spotting as I was told for the first 6 months. Then the pain started and I just didn't feel good for about 5 months. I got an antibiotic because my doctor told me that I might have a secondary uterine infection. It helped, but I still didn't have my normal level of energy and my joints were hurting.

I had a sonogram and it showed that it was in place but I have a cyst on my ovary. So I finally had it removed and I feel so much better. I still am having the everyday bleeding, which may happen for a while, but my doctor and I are going to wait a couple of months to determine if I need a uterine ablation. I know some people have had great success with it, but I'm just one of those few people that didn't. I would sure try it because it is so reversable. Good luck.

OK, two things for ya.
One, I used to work for an OB/Gyn. Almost every patient that we had who had had one raved about it and most of the girls that I know that have one think that it's wonderful. There were only a few patients that we had who had any problems with them(I think like 4 women in the 2&1/2 years I worked there had any problems). The few who did have complications, however, had very serious and painful complications. So, there's that.
Two, I don't know if you know exactly how an IUD works or if it would matter but it is a sterile abortion. I am pro-life but I am not going to preach to you. Just wanted you to know. Hope it helps

I have the Mirena IUD. It's good for 5 years and 99.9% effective. I have LOVED it! No pills, shots, condoms, etc. Out of sight, out of mind. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it is a little painful to have placed but not painful enought that I won't do it again after my next child. Your periods gradually taper off after getting it. I don't even have one anymore. Good luck

I just have the plain old IUD. I've had it for 5 years now & "love it." I have depression issues & wanted to steer clear of anything that messed w/ my hormones.

Know it may take some trial & error on the wire "strings" that stay out of the uterus & in the vagina. They kept poking my dear hubby during sex until we got them the right length. Otherwise, not much remarkable.

Mirena. Had it for 2 years. Love it -- don't even think about birth control. NO period!
It was painful to get it placed, but that is short-lived and varies greatly from woman to woman -- I have a friend who didn't feel a thing and never had any cramping, while I took advil every day for a couple weeks. Periods gradually decreased, then went away completely after about a year.

Hi C.,

I had the Mirena put in about 3 months ago. I have not had any problems with it. The doctors told me that it might cause a little discumfort while putting it in but i never felt anything. It is wonderful. I have had some spotting and cramping but i called the doctor and she said that it could last up to about 6 months after it is inserted. I did have it done right after i had my second baby. Once the hormone levels in it start working then i will no longer have it any might not even have a period. To me that is wonderful! I would definetly concider getting one. It is so much better. If you are like me and are not wanting to remember to take the pill everyday or getting pregnant then i would go for it. I got pregnant both times on the pill and did not want that to happen again so the doctor said that this was best until we decided to try again. Good luck.
